Alchemy Story is a wonderful farming simulation game where all the villagers have been turned into animals and it is up to you to turn them human again. Éloïse Laroche, the creator, was kind enough to give us an early access copy so that we can share with you everything that has been developed so far. You can follow her on Twitter as Confused Hamster and get caught up with the most recent updates with us here. You’ll love the adorable art style, brewing potions, and completing quests for the townsfolk! See below our sneak peek of what’s to come with video playthrough.

    Story

Play as Arabella, training under the professor and alchemist Edward, and arrive to a seemingly deserted town. Edward explains that he believes the Witch has cursed all of the villagers and turned them into animals! He has prepared a transmutation circle in his basement to reverse the spell but first we must find the villagers and help them remember their names. The story in Alchemy Story is very promising and I can’t wait to play more!

Talk to Edward to begin the story

    Main Quest

Edward instructs you, via a letter from your mailbox, to find the first “person” which is a shepherd’s dog. You need to talk to the dog a few different times before you can progress the main quest. You can only talk to everyone once per day so you’re required to go to sleep in your bed. When the dog remembers his name, start searching for the mementos around their farmstead. All three items will be listed in your quest log so you know what to look for. Once all three items are found, go to Edward’s house, use his lift to the basement, and perform the transmutation.

    Edward’s transmutation circle

    Noah

You can now find and meet a shepherd named Noah returned as a human at their farm. Talk to Noah and receive your first farm animal as a gift! He also now sells cows, sheep, chickens, and rabbits, with different colors on different days. Go back to your farm and find an egg in your coop and hatch it. The most adorable baby chick with a red bow will come out and you can use the action button to jump for joy! Music notes will burst from you and the chick displaying that you are happy to see each other. I would like to be able to see an animation of petting but that may be still in the works.

    Noah’s human form

    Jasmine

The next in-game day, you will receive another letter from Edward telling you to find someone else. A lonely fawn can be seen wandering around another farmstead. Speak to it and repeat the same earlier instructions. This time, find different mementos that are important to this villager remembering who they are. Again, once you have performed the transmutation, you find a girl name Jasmine wondering her farm. She sells you items such as bugs, that you will need for potion-making, and another interesting addition to your farm; beehives! Purchase beehives and you can harvest honey. Jasmine is also the Fairykeeper; friends to all fairies. When you have given her the required items, you will unlock access to the Forest.

    Jasmine’s human form

    The Forest

Inside the forest, there will be many trees that you can chop up with your axe to receive lumber and other items. Every action with your axe will take up energy that is displayed on your screen. Once at 0 energy, you will no longer be able to cut down the trees but there doesn’t seem to be any other penalty.

    Chopping wood in the Forest

Occasionally, a key will be among the items you gathered from the chopped trees so that you can unlock the next level of the Forest. Sometimes there will be a bench in the further areas that will replenish some energy. It’s unclear what other mysteries lay in this Forest but I’m excited to find out.

    Side-Quests

One character you will be able to speak to from the beginning is Charlotte. Charlotte sells flowers that you can multiply in your garden or use for potions. She also sells garden plots so you can plant more things. She and Edward will begin to send you letters asking for you to bring them specific items. You can chat with them when you have said items in your inventory and they will automatically thank you. You will also receive money for your troubles. Completing a quest for them, chatting to them, and giving them a gift will display a smiley face. Quests and their favorite gifts will have a wider smile icon appear.

    Chatting with Charlotte

    Foraging

Items can be found everywhere around the town such as in trees, the grass, and even on fences. They are all helpfully surrounded but swirling stars so they immediately stand out. Every day you can collect more items. However, some of the items Edward will request for his potion-making, such as Dark Water, will only be purchasable through him. It’s a little odd that he is asking you for an item he already has but it isn’t a big deal. Everything you need and the amount will be viewable in your quest log.

Foraging a butterfly and maple leafs

    Your Farmstead

Every morning you will start inside your home near the bed you have just slept in. The bed is to save your game and start a new day. Normally I would want the ability to save separately from sleeping but there doesn’t seem to be any consequences in skipping to the next day or things that are missable.

When the next day is loading, it briefly tells you what day it is but it doesn’t appear on your screen when walking around or on the calendar. The developer just recently implemented a Day/Night Cycle so perhaps this is merely unfinished. Furthermore, do not stay up past midnight as Lutins will steal some of your money! I do appreciate the fact that once midnight hits, your character is sent home automatically. It saves me from walking all the way back.

On your farm, you will have a barn, a coop, a field with garden beds, a mailbox, and an adorable owl that will do some shipping for you. As a side note, I wish there was a mini-map on my screen as it took me awhile to recognize places and know where to go. However, I absolutely appreciate that all the farmsteads in the town have different colored roofs that I can see from afar. Another helpful feature would be that the name of the person’s farm appears, once you have uncovered it, when you enter the area. I’m just particularly bad with navigation and directions.

    Your farmstead

    Potion-Making

Inside your home is a cauldron where you can practice your alchemy and make some money or enjoy the effects the potions give you. You will start off with two recipes that give you a list of items required to make them. Brew them and bring them to the owl just outside your home and you will receive money. What potions can be shipped at the time will change daily. New recipes will unlock by completing the aforementioned side-quests.

    Your Farm Animals

So far, there is one trough on your farm that will feed all of your animals once per day. Approach it to select up to 3 of the listed items from your inventory that you have foraged such as plants and acorns. I can see why the items only pop up when you hover over them and then disappear so as to get out of the way, but I would prefer to see everything all at once. I’d also like to know what those items are worth and how many I own so as not to give away something too precious.

The developer has said that the more you feed your animals, the faster they grow. I gave my single chick 3 items every day for a couple of days and it turned into an adult! Seeing the adorable baby animals a little longer would be nice but perhaps other people would like to be able to receive their produce a lot faster. I skipped a couple days of feeding my chicken and there doesn’t seem to be any negative effects, for now. My preference is that my animals don’t get sick or die and to be able to take care of them at my own leisure.

    My adult chicken

    Your Garden

To plant anything in your garden you must first interact with the most adorable gopher you have ever seen. It’s not obvious at first because it is hiding in a hole. There are a total of 9 plots which is a good amount for the items you get. Select items from your inventory like flowers can be fed as a snack to your friendly gopher and it will plant everything for you! In just a few short days whatever you planted will be multiplied by 4 and ready for harvest. Bugs such as butterflies may even appear on top. As of now, there’s no need to water your plants but there is a fishing well and bucket nearby so that may change.

    The gopher in your garden

    Graphics, Controls, and Sound

Everything is in 3D with vibrant and beautiful colors. With regards to scenery, details are even added such as ponds, paths, and lights. When speaking to characters, they seem more alive as they continue to move and give facial expressions. It was great to see that our main character has lines and the dialogue box that appears will let you know who is currently speaking. Moreover, I have to make a special mention of the animals in this game because they are the cutest things to look at. I love that you can zoom in and out to take a closer look.

A tutorial box at the beginning of the game will clearly tell you what keys to use to play. I used a mouse which controlled the rotation of my camera and clicking on my menu and text. Everything worked pretty seamlessly for me.

The music is nice and relaxing and will change depending on what time of day it is. That was a feature I enjoyed as I never really found myself needing to constantly check what time it was. Hopefully, there will be sound effects added for the animals that make them just that much cuter. They will however walk right up to you when they see you which is already too much cuteness for my heart to handle.

    Sheep, chick, and chicken

I truly enjoyed playing this demo and can’t wait for the full release which you can wishlist on Steam here. There’s a release date noted of the summer of 2019. Stay tuned with myPotatoGames as we continue to follow the developer’s progress with an eventual final rating. For now, watch our video playthrough below for alchemy Story Demo Gameplay Part 1 and continue to watch for Part 2!

We’re not even halfway through the year and the games keep on coming! There have been quite a few announcements from us of indie projects in the making or with set release dates that you may have forgotten. We at myPotatoGames have compiled a list of our favorite games and most recent news with their dates and platforms so you can mark them on your calendars!

If you haven’t the time to play all of these wonderful titles, we’ve narrowed them done by categories so you can decide what you like the most in your games. Most games will fit in multiple categories but we’ve let you know where the main focus seems to lie.

    Games for Cat Lovers

We wanted to emphasize that there will be games where you can either be a cat or pet and play with cats. Most games below are about farming and exploring but cats will always get a special mention from us!

Games that are Remakes or Switch Ports

Many games are either being remade/remastered or simply being ported to the Nintendo Switch which is definitely still exciting. Rune Factory 4 Special for example was originally on the Nintendo 3DS and will be getting the new addition of the Newlywed Mode. Click on the links in the titles for more.

    Games for Zelda Fans

The Legend of Zelda may not be getting a new core game anytime soon but there are still great things in store with the series! Link’s Awakening, a remaster from the original Game Boy game, looks quite charming, and the Cadence of Hyrule spin-off is an interesting choice for a mash-up. Tunic, has a cute lovable fox that looks like Link and was heavily inspired by the series.

    Games with Monster/Creature Pets

If your favorite part about farming games are raising the animals or you like to be able to capture or befriend monsters/creatures, then these games are for you! In Ooblets, you get to actually “grow” said creatures in your garden.

    Games for Animal Crossing Fans

What makes an Animal Crossing game so great is all of its features combined with customization, decorating, and performing daily activities. However, what really stands out is its socializing aspect. In these games you will be able to interact with all of the townsfolk and make new friends!

    • Littlewood – May 2019 – PC and Nintendo Switch
    • Sunvale – TBD 2020 – PC, Linux, Mac, and potential for consoles
    • Hokko Life – TBD – PC and potential for Switch and mobile

    Games with Crafting/Building & Exploration

You might enjoy being able to build or create objects with items you have found by foraging and traversing wondrous landscapes. If so, check out the games below.

Games with a Large Focus on Farming

These games offer many things to do on your farmstead with crops and animals to care for. These are games similar to the ones we all love; Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons. However, Atomicrops has added the use of guns and fighting off mutants in your gardens so click below for details.

    Games with Platforming or Puzzles

Platform games have a lot of precisely-timed jumps and puzzles to solve to progress further in the levels. From Etherborn’s anti-gravity mechanic, to Super Mario Maker 2’s ability to create your own courses, these games all offer more than your average games in the genre.

    Games with Unique Twists

It’s a little harder to describe these games as they have combined elements and genres together to form quite a unique gaming experience. Untitled Goose Game is one such game where you play as an annoying goose, and sneak up and play mean tricks on villagers.

Hopefully you have found this guide helpful and don’t forget to click on the links provided for more information on every game. Stay tuned as we announce more new and exciting games coming our way!

    Post Image

Unravel Two was released in June 2018 for the PS4 and Xbox One. Now you can play it on the Nintendo Switch since March 22nd, 2019, which is the version I will be reviewing today. This puzzle platformer was developed by Coldwood Interactive and published by EA. In this sequel, you can now play cooperatively, local only, with a friend! You play as anthropomorphic beings made of yarn, called Yarnys, that are attached together. This adds so much more depth to the gameplay with unique challenges. Unravel Two is the perfect game to play with someone as each character is needed to work together.

    The Story

The plot isn’t too obvious in this game but the message is; making connections and building friendships. Throughout the levels, you will find in the background faded silhouettes of two children running away together. It is not clear whether the two kids are being chased by adults or why but that the Yarnys are lending them a hand. The scenes can be interpreted as current events and we are like spirit guides that they cannot see or that we are simply putting memories back together again and are witnessing events that have long-since passed.

The children hiding behind garbage as adults look for them.

The beginning of the game starts with a stormy night as we see the red Yarny falling overboard from a ship. As you land on an island, you meet another blue Yarny (in a similar situation) that you immediately form a bond with. You end up in a lighthouse which becomes your hub world to access all seven chapters. After completing a level, color, light and parts of the paintings on the walls of the lighthouse start to fill. I believe this is from the pieces of light that you find scattered throughout those said levels. It seems as though the more time you spend together, the more you start to build a home for yourself.

Adding pieces to the paintings in the lighthouse.

    Gameplay

Being tied together can seem like a pain if you’re thinking of The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, like I was but it’s far from it. If one character makes a successful jump to another platform, the other one can either attempt to do the same thing or simply tug on the yarn linking both of you together to rejoin your partner. It can look like rock-climbing if you’re faced with a ledge below or like climbing a spider’s web if you need to be pulled straight upward. Ledges are also sometimes reachable by wall-jumping like in Super Mario which is a lot of fun.

    Swinging to the next ledge.

You can use the yarn as a type of lasso to latch on to nodes to then swing and launch yourself forward. Both players can do this separately or together to create a longer string of yarn to reach further places. You can also adjust the slack or length on your own. Each player can also form knots on nodes from one end to another to create a spring to bounce off. The string can also be used as a bridge to ferry objects to another area.

Moving a bucket from point A to point B.

    Working together is the best!

There’s plenty of yarn that can be used between the two players but sometimes the restriction of your reach is built into the puzzle. One character may have too many knots tied at one time so it’s up to the other to complete other tasks in a certain order.

As a form of aid, you may need to loop your yarn around a certain object so that the other player can pull themselves back up after being left behind. This is especially true if both characters need to be in two different places at once to connect things together. For example, if someone needs to press a button while the other walks under a lifted object. In one of the levels there was a chicken chasing the Yarnys and therefore one character had to distract it while the other escaped. The camaraderie needed in this game is absolutely heartwarming. You constantly need to lend each other a hand to prevail.

It’s possible to change you color and appearance.

It’s easy but not too easy!

If you are like me and have a hard time using the swinging mechanics in this game but excel at perfectly timed jumps, fear not, you can hitch a ride on your partner until that particular challenge is over! In this game you can become intertwined with your partner and take a back seat to playing if you’re having a hard time with a certain obstacle. This way no one is waiting too long after the other player and there’s no need to become frustrated with each other.

Combining together to form one Yarny.

Speaking of frustration, if you’re having a particularly hard time with a puzzle there are always hints that are available! However, I found myself rather enjoying the puzzles that this game had to offer and never spent too much time on any of them. There are no lives, no health bar, and if you die you only have to restart to the last checkpoint. There are an abundance of checkpoints which are situated pretty much after every puzzle. A guiding light will act as a checkpoint and also always show you where to go next.

Impatient partner is impatient but it’s hilarious!

This gives the game just the right amount of a challenge without being too difficult. The only times you will die is if an animal reaches you or if you fall into a dangerous pit of fire, or drown in deep water. There are also enemies that look like wisps of dark clouds. They supposedly represent dark or negative thoughts or feelings and you cannot let them touch you.

    Graphics and Controls

The background graphics can be a little jarring at first as they lean more toward the realistic while your characters look a lot more like cartoon-style. However, as you continue to play you truly get to experience an amazing environment from caverns to rapids and to lush green forests. There are a lot of objects and things in the environment to interact with. Some vines can be climbed, forklifts can be used to access new heights, buckets can be turned over to create an extra step, and bricks can lend some weight to a plank as a catapult.

    Gorgeous sunset overlooking the water.

The developers really did a wonderful job with the physics and the mechanics in Unravel Two. Every single action taken is so seamless and precise. It reminds me of what Little Big Planet tried to be, at least the second iteration that I played, but ultimately failed at. The movement of objects and their gravitational pull were spot on. It made them and yourself very easy to maneuver. I would recommend that the game be played with either two pro-controllers or one pro-controller and both joy-cons together as it would be easier to pull off certain moves.

Gaining momentum with a skateboard to reach the top.

This game may seem rather short but it is definitely worth the money. In fact take all of my money because I want more levels or a third game with cooperatively play which is something I hope they continue to do. The game will probably take you approximately 7-8 hours to complete but there are separate challenges that open up after every level if you want to attempt even tougher puzzles and obstacles. You can purchase Unravel Two on the Nintendo eShop here.

If you’re a jumpy, easily-scared person like myself, It can sometimes be hard to join in with Halloween fun. You’re too old to get away with too old for trick or treating, but don’t particularly want to watch The Exorcist with your mate. But have no fear (literally), as we’ve compiled 5 great not-too-scary games that you can enjoy this Halloween.

    Night In The Woods

Night in the Woods is an autumnal themed indie adventure game. Highly relatable to many, the game shows the crumbling former mining town of Possum Springs. After the protagonist, Mae Borowski drops out of college and returns to her hometown, she finds things as gloomy and hopeless as ever. But this time there’s something more. Strange and eery occurrences are happening. And there’s something in the woods. This charming game with beautiful music can be played on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Xbox One, Android, Macintosh operating systems, and iOS.

Costume Quest & Costume Quest 2

Costume Quest is a Halloween-themed party-based RPG game. The game is developed by Double Fine Productions and published by THQ. The player controls a kid who is out trick-or-treating with their twin sibling. When their twin is kidnapped by a monster, the player must travel around the neighborhood and collect candy, items for their costume, and other children to aid them in fighting the monster and rescuing their sibling. The game was released on October 19th, 2010, and can be played on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Mac OS X, Linux, iOS, and Android. The game’s sequel, Costume Quest 2 was released on October 31st, 2014.

    Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (also known as Luigi’s Mansion 2 in Europe and Australia) is an action-adventure video game for Nintendo 3DS. The game was released in Japan on March 20, 2013, and most other regions later on that month. The game is the sequel to the 2001 Gamecube game, Luigi’s Mansion. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is set to be released for Switch at some point during 2019.

The protagonist of the game is Luigi, who is sent by Professor E. Gadd to explore spooky abandoned mansions, inside which hostile poltergeists reside. Using the Poltergust 5000 (which resembles a vacuum cleaner), Luigi is entasked with capturing the ghosts and ultimately retrieving a Dark Moon fragment.

    Little Nightmares

Little Nightmares is a stop-motion-esque game, with an environment uncomfortably reminiscent of one’s childhood nightmares. The game is a puzzle-platformer horror adventure game that utilizes imagery, empathy, and strange and bizarre encounters (as opposed to overused jump-scares) in order to evoke a sense of horror. With the PC version of the game garnering a score of 81/100, critics praised the game’s atmosphere, graphics, and audio.

    Thimbleweed Park

Thimbleweed Park is a puzzle-mystery game that features pixel graphics. The tiny town of Thimbleweed Park is home to 80 very strange people. Five people with nothing in common are drawn to the town. Although they might not yet know it, they are all deeply connected. They’re also all being watched. From a rotting corpse to an abandoned circus, the game is a far cry from Stardew Valley. The game is available to play on Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Linux, and Mac.

This review is based on the EARLY ACCESS version of My Time at Portia. New features and improvements are added to the game at a steady rate. All opinions and experiences are based on the current version of the game. A full Review with a final score will follow once the final version of My Time at Portia becomes available.

My Time at Portia is a game that is extremely difficult not to compare to games such as Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing.

The simulation RPG developed by Pathea games is a title that despite drawing comparisons to other games of the genre, manages to carve out its own unique experience that is certain to find a committed and hardcore fanbase. Despite only just releasing via Steam early access to the public, My Time at Portia is remarkably dense. Players can fish, farm, mine, build, converse with townsfolk, get married, fight bosses and traverse dungeons and with the game planning to remain in early access until fall of this year, it’s safe to say this isn’t all that players will be able to do.

The story begins with your character moving to the town of Portia to inherit your father’s decrepit old workshop in the hopes of restoring it to its former glory, it’s a simple premise that is short and sweet, quickly moving out of the players way to allow them to create their own narrative. Little tidbits of story regarding the world of Portia can be found if you look for them, and there are interesting side stories, such as the conflict between the Church and the Scientific Research Center.

The first thing you notice upon arrival is how beautiful and lively the the world of Portia is. The world of Portia is set in a post-apocalyptic future where human life is sparse and machines are simply relics of the past, but from how mystical and serene the world looks, it certainly doesn’t look like there has been an apocalypse. Portia is peaceful, colourful and beautiful in a way that reminds me of Studio Ghibli films such as Princess Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro, with the world littered in lush forests with plenty of intriguing creatures that inhabit them. The attractive grassy landscape of Portia is juxtaposed by large monolithic structures that are remains of the old world. The music of My Time at Portia is also whimsical and calming, perfectly accompanying the tranquility of the games world. It’s truly an amazing and unique world.

    my Time at Portia Review

If this isn’t beautiful, than i don’t know what is

The town of Portia is full of interesting people to interact, and it’s entirely up to you if you want to take the time to build relationships with people. Some days i’d opt out of interaction with the townsfolk to spend a day focusing on building tools for my workshop, and on other days i’d forgo my crafting endeavours to try and build up some rapport with whoever I encountered in the village. The freedom to interact with characters however you like is an aspect of the game that i really appreciate.

Character Interaction is broken up into 4 options, Chat, Gift, Spar and RPS (Rock Paper Scissors) with each offering a way to build a relationship with the people of Portia. Chatting, sparring and play Rock Paper Scissors will slightly raise your relationship level, with gifting being the main way to win someone over (because who doesn’t like a nice gift?). Each character has distinct likes and dislikes, meaning you need to experiment or determine from their personality what they might like. I wanted to win over the town cat Pinky so I gave her a fish, I wanted to win over the Major’s cute daughter Ginger so I made her a Parasol because i’d seen her out in town with one before. The relationship system in the game is simplistic, yet fun enough to do that it makes me actively seek out conversation with the characters i want to befriend. The residents of Portia also live out their days in town realistically. When it’s time for school, kids are scurrying to school, and when it’s early in the morning Martha who runs the town bakery manages to do her morning exercise before she starts work. Characters even attend town meetings and festivals. The attention to detail in each character is evident, and really adds to the idea of Portia being a realistic, functional town.

    my Time at Portia Review

It appears I’m running late to the town meeting

When you aren’t chatting to people, you’re sure to be preoccupied by the rigours of running the workshop. My Time at Portia isn’t about the small satisfactions, it’s about working on the small incremental steps to achieve a well-deserved and rewarding goal. Much like other titles of a similar vein, most of your time in Portia will be spent grinding out what you need each day in order to complete commissions, which are essentially quests that can be collected from characters specifically, or via the commissions board in the Commerce Guild. Sure, some commissions can be achieved in a day, but most require a multitude of days of work, but the pay off for that hard work makes the gameplay loop extremely addictive.

I’ve never been a fan of having to methodically plan in games, but despite Portia requiring smart planning to ensure your days are well spent, I found myself rather comfortable and engaged with planning my days to be as efficient as possible. Most days will spent trying to mine as much ore as possible, while also making time to make efficient use of all the machinery at the workshop, such as utilizing the furnaces to smelt copper ore into copper bars or using the industrial cutter to ensure you have enough wooden boards. The mining despite being remarkably simple is really engaging, with plenty of resources to derive from Portia’s abandoned ruins. Simply whip out a pickaxe and mine whatever you like, or make use of your relic finder to find rare pieces of loot that remain from the old world. The fact that you can pick and choose how to approach each day in Portia is one of the games greatest strengths.

Mining is simplistic, but undoubtedly addictive

The games crafting system is multifaceted and despite being overwhelming at times, provides the player with a multitude of different things to create. The crafting in the early days is remarkably simple, but it quickly becomes far more intense. For example, to craft some of the game’s initial items, you simply need the items required and a single workshop table, however, as you complete commissions you are given lengthier and more difficult commissions that require the items to sometimes go through 3 different pieces of machinery.

Thankfully the crafting menus are simple to understand, but there are still some underlying problems. An issue I found was that you could accept commissions that require machinery that you do not own yet. This isn’t particularly a huge problem but it can easily lead to confusion as to why you can’t craft a particular item. Another minor gripe I have with the crafting is the timer on crafting items. It makes sense that in order to smelt ore into bars, that it may take some time, but as the game progresses to the point where you’re needing to manufacture dozens of bars for commissions, the time you have to wait starts to feel a little unnecessary, and it just lead to me putting my character to sleep to speed the in-game hours up. I may just be being extremely nitpicky, but I feel like this is something that should be fixed if possible in future updates. Regardless of the minor issues i find in the crafting system, i found the crafting in Portia constantly surprising me with the sheer amount of depth and options that it provides. Whether you want to build things for the Portian locals to make some money, or dedicate your resources to making a more efficient workshop, in the end it’s up to you.

Making sure to efficiently use your workshop machinery is the key to success!

My Time at Portia has all the trappings of a great simulation RPG, however, the game’s shortcomings become more evident the longer you spend in the world of Portia. For example, the game’s combat despite being rather fun with it’s simple hack n’ slash gameplay falls apart in the game’s dungeon sections. A combat system that feels great when there are one or two enemies falls apart when you are swarmed by numerous enemy types in the dungeons. The dungeon’s bosses also feel remarkably unfair, with the primitive combat leading to trial and error that saps the enjoyment from the dungeon crawling experiences. I still highly enjoyed delving into the dungeons however, with the highlight of the dungeons being the platforming segments that reward rare items for straying off the beaten path. I’m sure that the issues with the combat will be noted and fixed in due time, but as of right now, they can be a little frustrating.

Exploration is the highlight of My Time at Portia’s dungeons

My Time at Portia at the end of the day is a good game that has all the foundations laid to make it a great game as the title progresses through it’s early access period. Despite being room for improvement (mainly with the combat and crafting systems), My Time at Portia is an extremely addictive and enjoyable simulation RPG that I believe is already well worth the price of admission. The world is beautiful, the characters are varied and interesting in their own unique ways, and there are a multitude of things to do. It’s always hard to judge a title when it isn’t entirely finished, but I do believe My Time at Portia will progressively become a better game as it nears the end of it’s development. Developer Pathea games has already indicated that new areas, commissions, side quests and more will be coming throughout the rest of the games development cycle, they even plan to add the ability to raise and ride animals. With more content on the horizon, as well as hopefully fixes for some of the issues I raised in this review, It seems obvious that My Time at Portia is only going to become an even greater game. For those wanting to jump in now, the game is available via Steam early access, with the planned full release slated for PC, Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4 and Xbox One later this year.
