A Farming Simulator With a Twist

You, the player, have purchased your first plot of land located in an aging town in Japan’s countryside. Fully customize your character and your cell phone, and begin your new life. Your goal is to create a homestead you can be proud of. You’ll learn to collect your own water, generate power, grow crops, craft food, care for your animals, and much more in order to help your local economy.

You’ll get to ferment soy sauce, grow and grind your own flour, and even make cheese. Then, you can take it all a step further and cook recipes using your homemade ingredients.

SunnySide also features a colorful cast of characters for you to interact with. Life in the small town is peaceful, but not without its problems.  Each of the locals has their own issues to deal with, as well as having distinct personalities and stories. As you take the time to interact with the characters, you’ll get to learn their backstories and problems. Bond with the locals, attend events, and even find someone special to date.

What sets SunnySide apart from the other farming sim games that keep cropping up is that it seeks to combine modernism with the old. It also skips some of the more well-used game mechanics. There are no watering cans, shipping bins, or seemingly endless gifting to increase relationships.

You’ll have access to solar panels, electric water pumps, and other contemporary machinery. Upgrade your technology to further improve your farming experience. Developer RainyGames wanted players to leave the tedium behind and truly get to enjoy a farming experience.

    Coming Soon

There is currently no release date available. You can find SunnySide on Steam to wishlist, however. It will also be coming to Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and Playstation. In the meantime, you can check out their website.

For another Japanese farming sim, take a look at Shepherd’s Crossing. For other farming sims, there’s One Lonely Outpost, Voltaire: The Vegan Vampire, or even Blue Oak Bridge.

Repair and Clean the Post-Apocalyptic World

If you’re a gamer who loves to kick back and relax with fun cleaning games like Powerwash Simulator or even enjoy the cleaning portions of No Place Like Home, then this game is for you. From Chicken Launcher, who are the developers of No Place Like Home, comes Fresh Start Cleaning Simulator.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world that’s covered in trash and failing wildlife, it’s up to you to help. In this single-player FPS, you’ll run around the world with one tool at your disposal. It’s a curious combination of vacuum cleaner and water hose. As you travel around the world, wash away piles of mud and suck up mountains of trash. You can also water the dried up plants you find to help restore them to their former beauty. Water the sprouts, too, to see them bloom!

In Fresh Start Cleaning Simulator, you’ll also discover a variety of characters whom you can help. Bring them comfort and happiness through completing requests they may have. Sometimes you’ll find it necessary to find missing parts to abandoned machines to get them running again. These items haven’t been used in ages, and may need cables to be reattached or missing items to be put back.

This game looks like Chicken Launcher took No Place Like Home and removed almost everything but the cleaning aspect. Fresh Start Cleaning Simulator has the same cutesy, but pretty graphics and takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. This game would be perfect for those who like cleaning games without the farming aspect that No Place Like Home has!

    Early Access Available Now

Fresh Start Cleaning Simulator is available for Early Access on Steam.

If you haven’t seen it yet, Unpacking is another great, relaxing cleaning/organizational game.

With the incredible popularity of cozy games such as Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, it comes as no surprise that others have tried creating their own versions of comfortable, cozy games. A large part of that has been various flavors of farming games. However, for players looking for something different, there is The Courier. Created by indie developer Crescent Moon Games, comes a mail delivery and puzzle game with a cozy, mysterious atmosphere.

Welcome to the island of Orda, a very peculiar and mysterious place. You play as a woman who is the courier of the island. She runs her very own mail delivery service on this curious island. The more mail you deliver, the more secrets about Orda you’ll discover.

Use different vehicles to get around the island as you deliver mail to residents. Explore on foot, by bicycle, by boat, or even by hang glider. Complete challenges, missions, and even mini games. Currently in development by Naps Team, Baldo is an upcoming action-adventure coming to Switch, amongst other platforms. The Zelda-inspired game has a cel-shaded art style, which is comparable to that of Studio Ghibli and Ni No Kuni.

There isn’t a lot of information available about Baldo. However, the following Nintendo announcement trailer, shows that in-game action is top-down, but that the game’s pseudo-realistic backgrounds are 3D.

The description beneath the game’s announcement trailer says the following:

The prophecy came true, the pure child is born. The no heart creature sealed in the underworld by the wise owls is about to rise again. The game is set in the world of Rodia, a journey into a magical land full of mysteries to discover. Baldo is an action adventure rpg, full of puzzles and intricate dungeons to solve. Traveling around the world, Baldo will interact with many weird and funny characters scattered everywhere, to complete the main story quest and many other side quests. You’ll travel into an open world map discovering new towns and people, fighting enemies, locating hidden temples and collecting objects to get new weapons or items to use.

From the trailer, it looks like players encounter a variety of characters and monsters. Additionally, it appears that dungeon-crawling, puzzle-solving and exploration all feature in the game.

Baldo will release on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows.

A release date for the game is still TBA.

Baldo has its own Facebook and Twitter pages where you can follow the game’s progress. Despite a lack of posts since earlier in 2019, Baldo recently replied to a post on WholesomeGames Twitter on 12th January.

    Yay! They’re alive! 🙂

Melbits World Pocket, created by Melbot, an indie studio in Spain, is all about multitasking, coordination, and solving puzzles by guiding the most adorable creatures called Melbits to the end of a mini-level. You can even customize these virtual pets with many options of accessories. The demo version is available now for free in English and in Spanish on iOS or Android mobile devices for the following regions: UK, Canada, Spain, and Malaysia. A particular member of the Potato family is Canadian so see below for gameplay footage and more information.

    About Melbits and Technology

Melbits are the embodiment of the “good vibes” we get from the internet or virtual world. The enemy characters that need to be avoided in the game are the opposite of that; viruses. As mentioned on the developer’s website: “Their vision was to blend the digital and physical worlds to create transmedia products and franchises that use technology in a magic way, with the noble intention of just making people have a good time.” The vibrant and colorful levels and Melbits do just that!

    A “virus” enemy

    Customizing Your Virtual Pets

When I first opened the app I was immediately greeted by bright and adorable creatures roaming around my screen. Creatures that I could engage with by customizing them with backpacks, hats, sunglasses, etc. You can even select one of four dance moves to give them, complete with different music playing in the background. They will cheerfully perform you dance selection for you at the end of a victorious level. Furthermore, you can take a selfie with them through Augmented Reality with your camera phone! This feature is indeed reminiscent of Tamagotchi and I can’t get enough of my cutest littlest pets. I’m hoping in the full version I will be able to collect more of them and obtain more accessories.

    High Scores and Collectibles

There are goodies to be collected in every level of Melbits World Pocket but I am uncertain of exactly what they do. If you have successfully guided the required amount of Melbits to the end of a level, your performance is rated with a score. Items gathered, Melbits saved, and time left from your timer (you can pick up hourglasses for more time), are all taken into consideration and added up. It is addictive to try and best your highest score and receive a “perfect” rating for every level. Perhaps it would be easier if the “tally” at the end stayed until you pressed a button and had an explanation that accompanied it.

    Perfect completion of Level 5

    Gameplay – Lemmings Inspired

In the demo you will have access to one world: Hobby Island. There are six levels to play through and one bonus level if you subscribe to their Melbits Club. You will see blue buttons and pink buttons that you can touch or slide. These will affect their corresponding colors of blocks or springs that are found in a level. Some will need to be used as platforms so as not to fall, others will propel your Melbits to greater heights.

Your Melbits will start appearing chaotically and walk toward the path they are facing until they either hit a dead end or each other, and turn around. If you have played the game Lemmings, you will know exactly what I mean. I have lead them straight to enemies and off the edges of cliffs on numerous occasions. Thankfully, they always return to me the next time I retry the level.

    Hobby Island world

    Levels: Difficulty, Design, and Sound

Each level was unique with different sets of challenges, and boy were they challenging! Trying to keep on eye on so many things at once and getting the timing just right can be quite difficult to do. However, each level is short and easy to replay as there are no “lives” and major setbacks. My favorite level was Level 5 as I could rotate a block in several directions. That offered different options to arrive to the same goal. I can’t wait to see what different designs the creators come up with for different worlds. I hope they stay just as bright and as charming! The soundtrack is cute, upbeat, and catchy which suits the game perfectly. See below for a video of gameplay including Level 5.

    More Information

Stay tuned with myPotatoGames for more on this game. Hopefully we find out soon the release date of the full version. There also seems to be some physical toys coming our way in 2019.
