PlayStation live-streamed their second State of Play on May 9th, 2019. They announced a few release dates and showed trailers for the list of games you’ll see below. Specifically, we at myPotatoGames wanted to highlight the following two games from the presentation for their adorableness and indie charm: Riverbond and Away. However, you can watch the video in this article for the full 10 minutes of PlayStation’s State of Play.

    • Monster Hunter World: Iceborne releasing September 6th, 2019
    • Riverbond coming this summer 2019
    • Predator: Hunting Grounds due sometime in 2020
    • Medievil remake releasing on October 25th, 2019
    • Away: Survival Series coming soon
    • FFVII remake – more to be shown in June 2019
    • Limited edition Days of Play PS4 console – event starts in June 2019

    Riverbond

Riverbond, a charming voxel hack-and-slash dungeon-crawler developed by
Cococucumber (Canadian indie studio). You’ll be able to play cooperatively and locally with friends and complete missions, find treasure, and defeat monsters and bosses. Riverbond will be coming as early as this summer to PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The creators have also confirmed that a Switch version will release sometime after launch. You can wishlist the game on Steam here or visit their official website here.

Riverbond has eight crossover skins from select indie games that the creators love and that we at myPotatoGames happen to love too. Find these guest skins hidden in treasure chests and use these characters on your journey! This wonderful homage includes the characters below.

In order: Raz (Psychonauts), Juan (Guacamelee!), Lover Mu (Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime), Robot 05 (Planet of the Eyes), The Kid (Bastion), Demelza (Knights and Bikes), Shovel Knight (Shovel Knight), and Bullet Kin (Enter the Gungeon).

The art style is reminiscent of Minecraft and Staxel with its tiny cubes! Riverbond “will let you go on an adventure, cut some grass, wreak havoc to [our] beautifully handcrafted maps, and maybe find a secret or two along the way”. Find out more on the PlayStation Blog by Vanessa Chia here.

    Away: The Survival Series

Play as a sugar glider, and step inside a wildlife documentary and experience nature from an entirely new perspective. In the distant future, natural disasters threaten the survival of every species on the planet. Venture deep into the wilderness in search of safe sanctuary and steer clear of fires or storms. Furthermore, you must jump, climb, and glide through a wide variety of landscapes such as forests, caverns, and canyons to avoid predators. Away: The Survival Series is developed by Breaking Walls; an indie game studio founded by industry veterans in Montreal, and will be coming soon on PS4 and Steam (wishlist here).

In addition to the beautiful environments, the soundtrack will immerse you even more in the nature as it says in PlayStation’s blog,

“Having worked on the soundtrack for nature documentaries such as Life and Planet Earth II, we partnered with award-winning composer and audio director Mike Raznick to compose Away’s orchestral score. Both epic and atmospheric, the game’s enchanting soundtrack punctuates every step of your journey and makes for a truly captivating gameplay experience.”

    Lauren Bernier
    Creative Director, Breaking Walls

Furthermore, if you missed the last State of Play, you can watch the video in our article here. Namely, highlighting the game ReadySet Heroes, a unique dungeon-crawler.

Staxel, a farming and building simulation game developed by an indie studio called Studio Plukit, has just been fully released today (April 11th, 2019) on Steam and Humble Bundle. If you’re a fan of Minecraft, you’ll definitely enjoy these pixelated blocked-shaped graphics! You can check out our earlier coverage of the preview of the game here. Now, let’s look at what has changed since the completion of the game.

    Magic Crafting

A new Magic Crafting System has been added to upgrade your tools and help you with the progressing of certain quests. Watch out for Star Bits, an important new crafting item, that will be falling from the night sky!

    New Pets, New Friends

You can now speak to Mayor Maximilian to find out if any new villagers are waiting to move into town. You can befriend those villagers through daily chat, by giving them gifts, and by completing quests for them. Become best friends with the villagers and you can choose to have them move in on the farm and become your roommate! Speaking of friends, you can send mail and in-game currency to people online in multiplayer mode.

You’ll now be able to get this new dog at random as your starter pet at the beginning of the game, or at random by buying a dog house. Rabbits, a wholly new added species, are found at the pet store, or via a village amenity you’ll unlock by befriending a certain animal-loving villager.

    Museum

As you find ancient relics and paintings, you can display your collections in the all-new Museum. This museum can be unlocked via a quest with a particular blue villager. The Museum is yours to build and fill with wonderful art!

    The Museum

Festivals, Calendar Extension, and New Lands

Festivals are celebrated throughout the in-game year of Staxel. From hunting down rogue prank-playing fairies, to exploring vast new caverns full of loot, there’s a lot more to do besides farming in Staxel!

Throughout the game you’ll find new lands to visit, such as crystal caverns and floating mushrooms in the sky. Check out the new Portal Festival for these new worlds to explore.

Staxel in-game days are now longer so you can have more time to accomplish all of this adventuring! Each calendar season is now 30 days, instead of 16, to give you more time to experience the best that each season has to offer. Make sure to check your calendar to review the current season’s events.

    The crystal cavern

    Arcade

You need to befriend a certain game-loving villager so you can take part in some fun and challenging minigames in the Arcade. Enter a digital world and gather the 4 magic items of the Demon King’s maze as you try to escape. The developer assures us that there will be a lot of jumping and platforming involved.

Inside one of the challenges of the Arcade.

As for other updates, some tools, fishing, and the recipe book have been tweaked, special merchants added, status buffs and debuffs, a picture-taking mode, among other minor changes. Follow the developers blog for more information! For more farming games, check out our latest news on Ooblets here.

This article is based on a very early demo version of the game.

Littlewood is a new RPG where you play the role of a hero who has completed their quest of defeating the evil wizard, saved the world of Solemn, and is now trying to rebuild the town of Littlewood. Being developed by the indie developer Sean Young, Littlewood brings an interesting spin to the usual town building simulator by melding together aspects of familiar games like Minecraft and Animal Crossing

In Littlewood, you get to fully customize your town. This doesn’t just include building homes for townsfolk, plotting farming areas, furnishing your home AND the townsfolk’s homes, but it also includes customizing the elevation of the land and choosing where to put bodies of water. This interesting element of customizing the terrain brings an extra touch to making the town your own.

Along with customizing the terrain of your town, there are also tons of activities to keep you busy like gathering resources, catching bugs/fish, farming, cooking, crafting, buying/selling goods, building relationships with new friends, and even becoming a master of tarot card readings.

Picture above is some of the interesting townsfolk you will get to know in Littlewood.

Littlewood is scheduled for release in May 2019 and already has a Steam page, so there’s not much more of a wait. If you’d like to check out the game right now, there is a free demo over on the game’s Kickstarter.

Be sure to stay tuned to myPotatoGames for the latest information on Littlewood and other games.  Happy Gaming!

Tis the season, friends! We here at MyPotatoGames happen to be particularly fond of this time-o-year. The gaming world is always chock full of a variety of specialized gifts for all the lovelies on our holiday list.  It is always more fun to give than to receive, so we took it upon ourselves to give you a hand with your sharing and caring this year. It’s time to spruce up the jovial festivities with some of the best cute and cuddly souvenirs and accessories we could find.  Anything from a decorative Animal Crossing Switch skin (hint, hint), to a classic-cool Super Mario Chomp Lamp, we grabbed some glamorous gamer-gifts to go ga-ga for. (click item title for link)

    Animal Crossing Switch Skin

Chosen for obvious reasons, this Switch skin will give the Animal Crossing lover in your life a little something to brag about, whilst also preparing them for the upcoming release of Animal Crossing on Switch.  Cute, simple, and affordable, this gift is a guaranteed hit.

    Mario Chain Chomp Lamp

The next item on the list is a bit more pricey, but totally worth the buckaroos if you know any true Mario fans (and really, who doesn’t). Super cool and uber nostalgic, the Chain Chomp lamp is the perfect addition to any Mario lovers collection.  Now that chomping nuisance becomes a helpful reading buddy! Let’s-A-Go!

    Super Smash Bros. Tee

This presentable present is here to celebrate the release of an epic new title, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. Do you like someone enough to get them a t-shirt but not enough to buy them a brand new game? Then this is the gift for you! Everyone loves a representative tee! Now you can you help a loved one show others exactly what SSB means to them.

    Ocarina of Time Themed Tee

For the classic gamer, the next piece is sure to impress.  Another simple tee, but one that speaks volumes.  The shirt depicts the play guide to Song Of Storms from Ocarina of Time, and includes the words “Make It Rain”, a clever allusion to the term coined for throwing cash around (case you don’t know). It’s a fun and funny gift that is enjoyable year round!

    Pikachu Holiday Sweater

What better way to bring in the holiday season than to rock an “ugly sweater” with one of the cutest creature creations ever, Pikachu! Totally adorable and super cozy, we feel the Pika sweater is a great holiday gift to be busted out year after year.  Pika, Pika!

    Stardew Valley Plushie

Another super cute fan toy we found is the Stardew Valley blue Junimo Plush.  Small, squishie, and round; what’s not to like? Fuzzy blue goodness for all your Stardew fan friends.

    Minecraft UNO Card Game

If there’s one thing that we can all enjoy, it’s when our favorite video games cross-over with classic board/card games.  Minecraft UNO brings you exactly that.  Frustrating fun for all, with a Minecraft twist! Having to draw four cards has never been this pixilated!

    Animal Crossing Holiday Puzzle

The only thing better than playing our favorite games, is putting together 550-piece works-of-art to show off to all. The Animal Crossing Holiday Puzzle is just as relaxing as the actual game, only without anyone yelling at you for manipulating the time/space continuum.

    Simple Game Mode Tee

Do you like gaming? Of course you do! You wouldn’t be reading this if you didn’t. So now that we know that, lets make sure everyone you come into contact with knows, too.  A teddy bear t-shirt with “Game Mode” written on it will do exactly that. You’re welcome.

     Super Mario Backpack

Last, but certainly not least, is another Nintendo beauty.  This backpack screams Super Mario so loud it’d break the bulb in your Chain Chomp lamp (not literally, in case you thought about getting both).  It is everything a Mario fan backpack should be, and more.  Mama Mia!

So January is over and February is approaching. With January being a relatively slow month for gaming, many people may be looking for that perfect title to get their year going with some new games. While we may not be spoiled for major releases overall, there’s a number of ports, indie games, and other smaller games to look forward to, this month. We haven’t done one of these in a while, but here’s our February 2018 preview!

Most of the titles below are for the Nintendo Switch, but there are other games coming out that we figured we should highlight. We’ll be tackling them in release order and giving a quick description of each one. So with that, let’s get started!

    Early February

Sky Force Reloaded (Feb 1st) – This mobile-app-gone-console, top-down, vertical-scrolling shooter has already made it to other systems. Now, it’s making its way to the Nintendo Switch! If games like Xevious or Ikaruga are your cup of tea, this might be one game to check out. (Launching on Switch; already on Xbox One, PS4, PC, iOS, and Android)

Night in the Woods (Feb 1st) – This indie hit from last year sees you exploring a town that has seen better days and trying to work out its secrets. It’s an emotional journey led by a group of older teens with nowhere else to go. February 1st marks the launch of this title on the Nintendo Switch. We have more on that in this article. (Launching on Switch; already on Xbox One, PS4, and PC)

We Were Here Too (Feb 2nd) – This game is a follow-up on free-to-play pilot from a year ago, We Were Here. The sequel (a chapter 2, of sorts), is an asymmetrical co-op puzzle game in which two players can solve puzzles by communicating via a walkie talkie. The two players must find a way to rescue each other. The original can be found here and played for free. (PC only)

Shadow of the Colossus (Feb 6th) – This remaster of one of Team Ico’s biggest successes is finally coming out. Climb massive behemoths in a quest to save someone you hold dear. This beautiful and thought-provoking game is worth it for anyone who sees games as art. (PS4 only – get it here)

Octogeddon (Feb 8th) – From the creator of Plants Vs. Zombies comes an absolutely absurd arcade-style game about a colossal self-genetically-mutating octopus that has taken it upon itself to destroy landmarks of every nation. You play the titanic octopus by rotating him left and right so that his tentacles block incoming threats. (PC only)

    Octogeddon gameplay February 2018 preview

Octogeddon looks like a wacky game, to be sure.

Dragon Quest Builders (Feb 9th) – Dragon Quest Builders is an interesting side step for the series, giving players freedom to build a world Minecraft style. We have an article about that here, featuring the trailer for the game, if you want to know more. Get your copy right here.

    Mid February

Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology (Feb 13th) – Radiant Historia is back on the 3DS with a story about a hero who will lead history down the proper path utilizing another world known as Historia. The Longest 5 Minutes (Feb 13th) – What happens when a hero reaches the final boss only to realize he has amnesia and doesn’t know how he even got here? Nippon Ichi Software brings us a tale of just that. The five minutes in which a great hero must remember everything important to him or perish on the spot. (Switch, Vita, and PC – Get it here)

Bayonetta 1+2 (Feb 16th) Bayonetta is proving herself as a part of the Nintendo cast with ports of her two big adventures to the Switch. Control the Umbra Witch with style by completing awesome combos and utilizing her powers to punish her enemies once again. (Switch only – Get it here)

    Fe landscape February 2018 preview

Fe looks absolutely beautiful. We can only hope the gameplay holds up as well.

    Late February

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus (Feb 22nd) – Pac-man, everyone’s favorite maze-crawling pellet muncher, is back in another trippy remix of his classic shenanigans. Make your way around brand new mazes with new challenges and even a mode that allows two players at one time! (Switch only)

Typoman (Feb 22nd) – Against all the odds, a hero emerges from the rubble. No really. The letters “H, E, R, and O) come together to form the protagonist of this off-beat, yet powerfully dark indie puzzle platformer about letters that come together to form the things they spell out is making its way to the Switch from the Wii U.  (Switch only)
