Farm Folks is a farming simulation RPG developed by Overgrown and published by Crytivo. The creators say they were inspired by the classic Harvest Moon series, and now after a successful Kickstarter, they will be bringing this game in late 2019/early 2020 to Steam (wishlist here) and Crytivo (pre-order here). Farm Folks have it all; farming, raising animals, fishing, mining, relationships, exploration, and more! If you’re interested in what the developers have been up to since our previous article, read on below.

If you didn’t get the chance to make a pledge on Kickstarter for all of the awesome rewards, Crytivo offers different tiers for pre-order purchases, the largest costing $89.99 but includes the following: Unicorn Cow Pet, Beta Access, Digital Art Book, Name in the credits, Pre Alpha Access, Full Game, Digital Strategy Guide, Wallpapers, Alpha Access (now available), Steam Key, Silver Backer Badge, and Soundtrack.

    What’s New and What’s Next

The developers recently published a devblog update announcing that they have made big improvements to their core game mechanics as well as some bug fixes. Right now they are working on some changes for their crops, mainly the fact that there will now be diseases and auras! On that matter they say the following:

    • “We’re working on adding a few different types of diseases to the game. Each will affect your crops in a slightly different way, and require a different kind of pesticide.”
    • “On Softshoal Island, some species of crops have a mysterious aura surrounding them. These provide various benefits to nearby crops, such as reduced disease chance, faster growth, increased yield, or a better chance at a bumper harvest!”

Since the pre-Alpha, they have implemented weather; Sunny, Rainy, and Stormy. They’ve also added a diary to record all major and minor events (there will be a story), more buildables to unlock more areas to explore, and new animation for the farm animals. Speaking of farm animals, the developers have done away with gates and have allowed players to be able to pick up and throw their livestock! But what I’d love to learn more about most of all, are the new creatures native to Softshoal Island called Molo! They look like an adorable combination of floppy-eared rabbits and little pink piglets!

We’ll keep you updated as the developers continue to post weekly news about their progress with Farm Folks. If you can’t wait to get farming now, check out the Nintendo eShop sale, including My Time at Portia!

Quench, developed by Canadian indie studio Axon Interactive Inc., is a puzzle game about herding different tribes of animals through many obstacles. You are a bird named Shepherd that will guide these animals through an emotional pilgrimage using your power of the elements. I found the puzzles surprisingly varied and the story to have unexpected twists of intrigue and betrayal that I won’t be spoiling but rather be giving my impressions on my experience. The game is available now on Steam here and the Nintendo Switch here, the latter being the version I will be reviewing today. The myPotatoGames team would also like to thank the developers of Quench for giving us this review code!

    Your Pilgrimage

The main focus is on the young new leader of the Elephant Tribe, Shaman located near the Western Elder Tree. It is Shaman’s duty to gather all of the other following tribe members: Springbok, Wildebeest, Zebra, Baboon, and Lion. Together they will travel to the Eastern Elder Tree and bring offerings to pray for prosperity and good fortunes. This is especially necessary as you have become aware that the lands to the East have become dry and hot, leaving many to go hungry, and dark spirits or smokebeasts have been plaguing their homes. You, the player, are born from a single fruit of the Western Elder Tree. I found this to be an interesting premise as elder trees grow in subtropical areas in real life and flower elderberries. It is even said in folklore that they ward off evil and give protection.

    Dark Spirits “Smokebeasts”

Just when you think that the story would simply be about a voyage of hope, leadership, and union (which is a great story in its own right), the game is filled with tragedy, loss, and more questions I needed answered. I had previously not given much thought to the smokebeasts as I just figured they were enemies and that was that but there’s a lot more to it.

There are different types that you will contend with that have their own ways of dealing with them. However, because you cannot zoom in and the levels can become quite chaotic, it can be hard to differentiate between Cindertsags and Ravagers (which took me a while to figure out which enemies those names belonged to). I think the game would have greatly benefited from a glossary or monster guide to not only show you the difference of appearance, but also to remind you how to defeat them (temporarily or otherwise).

    Levels and Puzzles

There are a total of 28 levels, half of which are more like an epilogue where you return home and fight the final boss. The first few levels are like tutorials showing you how to use the Power Wheel and your Weather Powers which are as follows: rain, lighting, wind, and earthquake. There are groves that have stones to indicate either a resting spot or an area that requires a specific element to activate.

At first I thought that the symbols on the stones where there to show you which power to use, but they are actually there to tell you which power you will receive. There can be more than just one stone and therefore the amount displays how many different powers you will gain in return for the one used. It took me several levels to see tiny triangles, maybe butterflies, floating around the groves with their color giving you a hint to the element needed.

    Keep Watching that Stamina Bar

As your herd of animals walk, their stamina will drain. The tougher the terrain, the faster that bar will deplete. The specific rest areas need to be lush with green to have any effect on restoring stamina to your animals. If your stamina is empty, one member of the herd will die one after the other. When the levels were easy enough, I restarted the levels when an animal died thinking that if I run out, eventually I’ll have none to shepherd in the harder levels. I’ve also come to care for these animals and didn’t want to lose a single one. However, the number of animals you have will go back to their original count after every level. If you’re thinking “Well the elements are obvious; rain re-hydrates trees, earthquakes get rid of boulders, wind blows away sand, and lightning destroys thorns.”, you’re in for a spin later on.

    Weather Powers Can Do More

Elements will also have some secondary benefits or problems such as rain healing your tribe or calming smokebeasts, lightning create brush fires in dry spots, wind uncovering enemies, pushing them away or speeding up your animals, etc. These are all things you have to take into account before using your powers. Luckily, the game will pause when you choose your power and lets you take a look around to plan out your paths and strategies. What I enjoyed the most is that there are usually several different ways to arrive to the same goal and your powers aren’t limitless. Therein lies the deeper puzzle aspect; you must ration your powers and/or trade them wisely. Meaning, you can and will run out of your powers if you’re not careful.

    Different Tribes, Different Strategies

Once you have told your tribe of animals to set for a specific course, you cannot turn back. Sometimes even the most careful planning will be ruined by unexpected surprises as you watch your herd scatter away from a hidden enemy or having stragglers in the back that are slowing down the herd and draining more stamina.

Things start to get really intense when you have more than one tribe of animals to control and they are placed in different areas of the map in your levels. They also have unique characteristics that you need to be aware of at all times. For example: elephants are great swimmers but are much slower on land, wildebeests can easily climb slopes, and baboons can throw their firestones at certain enemies. You’ll probably use a lot of your lightning to quickly revive fallen animals but it can be quite frustrating if it happens in the water or right in the middle of your tribe because you can accidentally kill the ones that are alive.

    Complete All Objectives to Pass

Something that aggravated me towards the harder levels was the fact that instructions for the objectives where not at all clear. The main idea was there, but I struggled with what exactly it was that I was supposed to do when there were too many path choices that weren’t linear. Moreover, there was a level that told me to herd my animals to the water but I didn’t see any. Do I bring them south? North? Where do they want me to go? When this happened, I had to experiment quite a bit and then restart once I’ve figured out where everything was and what it did. Thankfully, not all levels where like this and sometimes a glowing ring showed you where you should head to.

    Graphics, Controls, and Sound

I didn’t mind that the gameplay had low-poly graphics with very simple designs except when it came to not being able to clearly see what was what if there were several things bunched together. However, it helped when hovering over certain areas with your powers as they would light up if you were using the right one. Then I would get frustrated again when the game would often lag or not respond to my commands. At the end of each segment of the story, there was a wonderful recap with beautiful backgrounds with a “cave drawings” art style. That, coupled with the soundtrack, made the game feel like it was truly inspired by African culture.

Every single level in the end was unique and changed with the story in mind. They can be pretty challenging but are grouped up into shorter stages so it’s not much of a drag if you need to do it over. The animals are adorable and every tribe leader has an interesting personality that made me care about the story just all the more! Sure I’ve had my fair share of troubles with the controls, explanations, and speed, but it was overshadowed by the games heartfelt narrative and exciting strategic puzzles. If you want to learn more about the game, need support, or want to chat with the developers, you can do so here on their Discord channel.

I am so excited for todays release of the Nintendo Switch Lite!

The Nintendo Switch Lite is finally available for purchase starting today. The smaller, more handheld friendly version is out now and costs $100 less than the original console. For more details on all the differences between the two consoles, I’ve got you covered!

    Nintendo Switch Lite

It will now be much easier to play all my favorite games on the go, without having to worry about the bulk of the home console. I know it’s not that much different in size, but taking a console like the Switch everywhere with you can sometimes feel risky.

Having a more portable version definitely feels like the safest way to game on the go. If you would like to get your hands on your very own Nintendo Switch Lite, you can do so on Amazon quite easily. In case you do plan on getting one, here are some ideas as to what accessories you might want to get to go with it.

As you may know I always love a cute video game and combining this with some survival elements and multiplayer fun, makes for a great experience. Trash Sailors created by two talented indie developers Weronika and Patrick, offers a fun combination of survival, local co-op and cute gameplay, that I just can’t help but get excited for!

In Trash Sailors you will play as a castaway on a tiny raft exploring a flooded world. This concept might seem a little scary, but luckily you can invite a friend to go on this journey with you. The game reminds me a lot of the charm that Don’t Starve has where you also fight for survival while exploring a randomly generated world.

    Explore With A Friend

Together with your co-op partner you can go on an adventure to collect trash from the flooded areas. All the garbage you find floating in the water can then be conveniently recycled into usable materials to repair and extend your raft. Not only does it clean the ocean, but it also helps you make a better raft.

    Trash Sailors

Of course the adventure will not always be easy and you will have to work closely with your friend to take on the many challenges you may face on your journey. In times of a flooded world everyone is fighting for survival so you may have to face some “big octopuses, deadly sharks, cunning penguins, mud alligators, wild tribes, and many more” in order to keep your little boat going.

Randomly Generated Worlds And Enemy Rafts

In the recent newsletter developer Weronika and Petter mentioned that there are currently 8 stages completed and they are aiming to add a whooping 20 stages to the final game. Trash Sailors also makes the use of randomly generated environments, this means that every time you start a new game, you will have a different world to look at and explore.

The developers also shared some first details about how enemy vessels will work in the game. In Trash Sailors natural forces can be unpredictable and brutal, but never forget about the enemies that may approach out of nowhere. Make sure you and your companion are ready at all times to take on any danger.

You can wishlist Trash Sailors right now on Steam, it is slated for a 2020 release. Before you do so, you should take a looksie at the cute Trash Sailors gameplay trailer below!

The Pokemon Company announced their most recent exclusive Galar Region Pokemon to Pokemon Sword and Shield coming to the Switch November 15th, 2019. The odd duck holding a leek of the first generation Pokemon that had no evolution, Farfetch’d (I mean really that name has an apostrophe), is finally getting its due! Behold the mighty Sirfetch’d: Type is Fighting and Ability is Steadfast.

His leek gets an upgrade too; it is now cut in half to make a sword with the stem and a shield with the leaves. This Pokemon is 100% ready for this upcoming game. This amazing news comes after the last Nintendo Direct we received including Pokemon Camp, cooking, and customization! I also have to mention that potato leek soup is the best soup ever! See below for more details on Sirfetch’d.

    CATEGORY: Wild Duck Pokémon
     TYPE: Fighting
     HEIGHT: 2’7″
     WEIGHT: 257.9 lbs.
     ABILITY: Steadfast

A noble knight that fights fair and square

The Farfetch’d of the Galar region can evolve into Sirfetch’d after experiencing many battles. They are calm and collected, and they make a point of always battling fairly. They are so noble in battle that they are often chosen as a motif for paintings. Of particular note is a painting—famous in the Galar region—that depicts a duel between a Sirfetch’d and an Escavalier.

Its irreplaceable leek has seen many battles

In battle, Sirfetch’d uses the sharp stalk of its leek as a lance and the thick leaves as a shield. It maintains this leek over the span of many years and treasures it more than anything. When its leek finally withers, Sirfetch’d will leave the battlefield and retire from battling entirely.

Witness Meteor Assault, the signature move of Sirfetch’d!

Meteor Assault is a new move introduced in these games that only Sirfetch’d can learn! Sirfetch’d points its leek at the opponent and charges toward them at great speed. This move is devastatingly powerful! However, it appears that the move also puts great strain on Sirfetch’d. It will be unable to take action immediately after using this move.

    Signature Move

As many of you may have gathered by now, I’m a bit of a feline fanatic. Having procured a Switch console this year, I have been meaning to make a cat-themed Switch game listicle for a while. Having finally gotten around to it, here you have it; Nine Nintendo Switch Games For Cat Lovers. (Nine because nine lives)

    Calico

This project started with a love for magical girls, cats, and a want to create a game that’s light, pink, cute, fluffy, and feminine. It also incorporates everything that’s enjoyable from a simulation game like Animal Crossing (furniture, decorations) but the animals will not leave/die, the shop will never close and the crops will not rot. The objective of the game is to make the town’s cat café active and full of cuddly creatures again such as cats, deer, raccoons, dogs, turtles, red pandas, foxes and more! For more Calico info head over here.

    Cat Quest

Cat Quest is an open world, action adventure RPG set in a world of cats, developed by The Gentlebros. The Cat Quest page on the Nintendo website (which is full of cat puns) explains how your player’s sister is kidnapped and you therefore embark on a journey to save her from the evil Drakoth. Available for only £9.99 on the Nintendo eShop, Cat Quest for Switch is a purr-chase your bank account won’t hate you for!

    Cat Quest II

Cat Quest II is an upcoming open world RPG where you play as both a cat and a dog (hisss!). Explore an extensive world filled with monsters, dungeons and quests as you restore peace to your kingdoms in a time of war. This forthcoming feline follow-up will be released on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Android, iOS, and Windows.

    Snacko

Snacko is a farming simulation game developed by an indie studio called bluecurse, based in Vancover, BC, Canada. The founders, husband and wife Jordan and Erisa, wanted to create a world “where cats rule the land” and so the project began in 2018. Snacko is expected to release sometime in the year 2021 for PC and Nintendo Switch. Get some more news on this cat-tactic game!

    BlobCat

In BlobCat you are tasked with the job of protecting the DiceMice from the naive BlobCats. With more than 90 different levels spanning over 6 worlds, Place arrows and guide the Dicemice to the Micehole! With local and online multiplayer, you and up to 3 other players can attempt to outsmart each other and send the BlobCats a-calling. The game costs a reasonable £8.99 to download from the Nintendo eShop.

    Night In The Woods

Night in the Woods is an autumnal themed indie adventure game. Highly relatable to many, the game shows the crumbling former mining town of Possum Springs. After the protagonist, Mae Borowski drops out of college and returns to her hometown, she finds things as gloomy and hopeless as ever. But this time there’s something more. Strange and eery occurrences are happening. And there’s something in the woods. This charming game with beautiful music can be purchased for only £17.09 on the Switch eShop.

    I and Me

I and Me is a platform puzzle game developed by Chinese studio Wish Fang and published by Ratalaika Games. It was released for Nintendo Switch in Japan and PAL regions on July 6, 2017 and in North America on July 13, 2017. Controlling two cats simultaneously, the objective of the game is to get them both safely to the end of each level. Whilst initially fairly easy, having two characters perform exactly the same action makes it increasingly more difficult to complete the game’s 92 levels. With a soothing soundtrack and four season-themed chapters, the game is pretty affordable at £8.99

    Mineko’s Night Market (upcoming)

Mineko’s Night Market is a cute cat-themed upcoming game for PC, Mac and Switch by Meowza games. You play as Mineko, a girl who has just moved to a superstitious island overrun with cats. The aim of the game is to find materials, craft items and sell them at the Night Market. You can befriend villagers, fish, undertake quests, play mini-games, plus more! Whilst it was initially hoped that the game would be released in late 2018, its release has now been pushed back until 2020.

    Little Friends: Dogs & Cats

Little Friends: Dogs & Cats is a pet simulation game for Nintendo Switch. The Nintendogs-esque game is set to be released in Japan on 6th December. The game allows players to reside and play with cats and dogs with “lifelike models, textures, expressions, and animations.”

    Spacecats with Lasers

Spacecats with Lasers is a cat-themed casual combat game. Help your Spacecat eliminate the Evil Space Rats and defeat the Pug King in this wild wave-shooter game. With plenty of perks and power-ups, plus the ability to customise your cat with items unlocked on your journey, you can have both a fashionable and fierce feline fighter. Whether you prefer a calmer cat caper, or want a “nerve-wracking bullet hell”, the game’s different difficulty options have you covered.

After going through all of these, I realized there are eleven, looks like this cat found some extra lives. 😀

For even more cat themed games head over here!

I talked about Food Fantasy earlier and how it’s available now for iOS and Android devices therefore I decided to try the free app for myself. Of course a game about unique characters inspired by foods would have me very interested! Food Fantasy is an RPG adventure management game where you have to manage and design your own restaurant, develop new recipes and gather the ingredients, as well as battling your way through the main story-line and side quests. There is so much to do in this game without ever having to wait long periods of time or having to spend real-life currency to advance. I can’t possibly cover all of the details today so I’d like to point out some basics and my favorite characters so far!

Food Souls are exactly what their name implies; souls come to being from food. They have magical abilities that humans have lost over the years and therefore can help us fight against the Fallen Angels that are consuming everything within the world. You have to form contracts with them in order for them to serve you as their Master Attendant and can be quite helpful maintaining a restaurant. Since it happens to be National Cheeseburger Day today (September 18th, 2019), I wanted to point out this awesome Food Soul literally named Hamburger. I haven’t managed to obtain him yet, but perhaps today is the day!

    Food Management Section

In your new restaurant you will be able to hire one Head Chef, and two assistant Staff members, Food Souls, that can help you out with profits. You’ll want to make sure that those particular Food Souls have Restaurant Skills and not just Combat Skills. Your Food Souls can only last so long, although some bonuses can prolong this, and will need to be swapped out. When their Freshness is at 0, you can stick them in the fridge! The Ice Arena will hold up to 3 Food Souls for free and will gain back their Freshness over a small period of time. If you can’t wait, use some items to speed up the process. In the Research menu, you’ll be creating new recipes or improving the ones you already have, as well as crafting said items mentioned above.

You can only uncover new recipes of your area of choice by trying different food combinations. I recommended using a guide for later on, only because the English translation in this and the infrequent use of the ‘space bar’, make it almost impossible to decipher the hints of locked recipes. If you’re missing ingredients, click on the one you want and it will guide you to the level where you can obtain more. Wait, did I just see a recipe for Stir-Fried Potatoes!?

    Battling with your Food Souls

Every day you’ll come across Daily Goals, Story Missions (main story and side-quests), Trials, etc in order to train your Food Souls and level up. You as the Master Attendant also need to gain levels by accomplishing these tasks in order for your Food Souls to be able to advance, Meaning, you can’t keep fighting if you’ve maxed them out. Your character can even help your Food Souls by learning some abilities via your Talents.

Your companions can go up in level, but also Star Rank when they are ready to Ascend. When you have enough items to Summon a new Food Soul at random, you can either unlock a new character, or get Shards toward one you already have that can be used to Ascend them. Then, by using in-game money, you can also level up your Food Souls’ skills to do more damage or support. It’s a lot to take in at first so I won’t get into it right now.

Combat in this isn’t too stressful as your characters will automatically do their basic attacks. When their energy bar fills, you can use their special attacks, which usually requires you to have characters that support each other (links). You can find out which characters to place together in your team by reading their skills. UR, then SR Rarity Food Souls, are the rarest characters you can obtain and therefore the most powerful. The game won’t tell you this so it takes some digging. Also, when deciding a team, make sure your Captain is the one you want because they start at 50% energy which can give you a huge advantage. Other than that, you’ll be spending a lot of time tapping on the screen at the right time.

    Design and Favorite Characters

I have thoroughly enjoyed “collecting” Food Souls and staring in amazement at their designs in relation to their names. Not only do you get beautiful portraits of each character, but you can also see them in their “chibi” forms which is absolutely adorable! Below are some screenshots of characters I find the most amusing out of the ones I have unlocked. May I present Peeking Duck: a character that battles with several miniature ducks!

I can’t help but feel a kinship to these characters as I have gone through my own journey of becoming more than just food. This game is also very addictive and easy to play while watching TV if you so choose. Ready to try it out for yourselves? You can go here for iOS and here for Android!
