The independent game community is quite a strong one, and has produced many games available for Switch!

Maybe the best thing about an indie game is that you know whoever made it really cared about what they were making. A true passion for one’s work tends to show in the final product. This much cannot always be said for some of the bigger games out there, that take many people to create. Many times, indies are even made by a single person with a drive to share a part of themselves with the world.

If you also happen to always be on the lookout for a good indie game that you can play on the Nintendo Switch, here is a list of the ones that I personally like and are available now. I like to keep track of the news on upcoming indies, like Calico and Mineko’s Night Market, as you know. But knowing about games coming soon is never as fun as finding out about some hidden treasures you may not know about that you can play immediately.

    Baba Is You

Baba Is You is cute little puzzle game that uses word combinations to solve puzzles and proceed through the world. In the game, you will use your character to move different parts of sentences to change the world around you. You can sometimes even change the goal you have to achieve simply by moving the right words to the right place. The game has a very simple yet cute feel, and costs only $15.00 through the Nintendo eShop.

    Untitled Goose Game

With the exploding popularity of this title, it might come as a surprise to some that Untitled Goose Game is actually an independently made game. Developed by House House and published by Panic, Goose Game hit huge with the gaming community for its whimsical and hilarious theme. Take on the role of goose that is determined to break the world to pieces with simple shenanigans. You can try out this indie hit for yourself now for just $19.99 through the Nintendo eShop.

Or will you talk with the strange old tourist and listen what he has to say about these ancient mysterious monuments…This action/adventure arcade puzzler developed by Shin’en Multimedia is available now for only $19.99 in the Nintendo eShop.

    Kine

Kine is a 3D narrative puzzle game about three daring machines that aspire to be musicians. Embark across a theatrical dreamscape by solving a wide variety of increasingly difficult 3D puzzles. Overcooked 2

The Overcooked games are pretty well known at this point. Dash around the hectic kitchens to prepare all manner of insane and intricate dishes. Play solo or with friends in an attempt to not be overcome by demand, and “overcook” all of your dishes. Overcooked 2 is currently available on the Nintendo Switch and costs $24.99. A bit more pricey than the rest of the Indies, but rest assured that much TLC has gone into making this game as fun and whacky as possible.

The kooky 2D adventure/sim-life game Village Monsters is now available to be downloaded on Steam.

Take on the role of the last man living in a world inhabited by monsters. With everything that you’d expect from a good life-sim game, with a monstrous twist, Village Monsters is one adventure that you won’t want to miss out on.

    Village Monsters

    Features List

Wild Child is a cute and relaxing 3D RPG game currently in the works by the team at Mijugames.

    Wild Child

The games starts with some very relaxing music, and an environment that inspires the desire to explore. Upon taking your first steps, you can already tell that you are set on a curious and whimsical adventure, with much to see and do. You play as a curious, young red-headed girl who is beset on befriending all the local wildlife. This happy heroine with an abundance of pheomelanin is ready to become on with nature, and it is up to us to help her do it.

To make friends on this expansive island, one must simply gather the materials required to make each animal happy. It is a very simple process that is as relaxing as it is rewarding. The little heart that pops up lets you know that you’ve made an adorable new friend, and may go about the process of wooing others.

    Wild Child

The gameplay is lacking a little bit of fluidity in movement, which is to be expected from an early build. This did not prevent me from enjoying my time looking around the island for things to interact with. The developers mention adding new features and other things to make the game funnier and more immersive. I definitely see a lot of potential here for a great zen exploration game.

The game is currently available to play in its early stages, and you can check it out for yourself on itch.io. For up to date information on changes and additions to Wild Child, be sure to follow the developers on Twitter. It looks like I’ve strangely made it my mission to find multiplayer games where the premise is “chore-like” if it were a real-life scenario. Not only do I find these types of games hilarious, but I’m also certain that they’ll make for great fun with friends. Especially if they are anything like Overcooked. May I present to you, Tools Up, a cooperative game about renovating homes. Paint walls, lay some tiles, move a bit of the furniture around in some pretty weird places. Developed by The Knights of Unity and published by All in! Games, Tools Up is coming soon in late 2019 for Steam, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.

    About Tools Up

Gather up to 4 players for this fun couch co-op experience for people of all skills! Renovate the apartments in the mysterious skyscraper while the tenants are away. Be sure to follow their wishes left behind on the blueprints. Tear off wallpapers, bring down walls, bust down doors, and cover the floor with vibrant carpets and panels – just be sure to do it in time and clean up after yourself!

    Key Features

    • Work hard – paint walls, lay tiles and throw everything you need to other rooms.
    • Play better together – join up to three players to move couches against the clock.
    • Expect the unexpected – environmental elements spice up things. Have you ever renovated a building surrounded by lava?
    • Lead the team – whoever holds the blueprint is in charge of the camera angle.
    • Join in the fun – simple controls and a low entry level make Tools Up! a perfect party game for everyone.

For more information about this game, you can check out the official website here.

Skies of the Past is a vast open-world game in a relaxing voxel style.

    Skies of the Past

Games in the voxel style are always a joy to play. The simplistic graphics always seem to mesh effortlessly with any story one wish’s to portray. I can already tell that Skies of the Past will be a voxel-style game that really gets its zen message across.

In Skies of the Past, you begin your journey on a mysterious floating island. You are completely surrounded by the ruins of an ancient civilization that time forgot. You must explore the vast world to discover clues to find out why you’re here, and what happened to inhabitants of the land.

    Skies of the Past

You will encounter many curious things, as well as useful things, like a hot-air balloon, or even a chill plane to cruise around the tranquil environment. Take the time to explore deep into a cave and reveal its hidden secrets. The developer also put a focus on making sure that the music perfectly matched the experience, as the “soft piano music and the sounds of wind and rain complement your journey.”

    Skies of the Past

Skies of the Past is still in development, and the release date is set as “to be announced”. For a much closer look at this title, the developer, Sebastian, recommends that all interested follow him on Twitter. There you will find the updates in development, as well as many gifs and pictures from the development of Skies of the Past. For more awesome voxel-style action, check out my coverage of Cube World.
