In a recent Tweet from developers, it was revealed that facial expressions have been added to Calico.

For those that have been missing out, Calico- Magical Girls Running Cat Cafe’s is exactly what it sounds like. The game is about girls that have magical powers, and run cafes for cats. Basically the cutest idea for a video game ever. The developers help to get that point across by having the art be just as adorable as the premise.

    Now with facial expressions.

In an effort to make the game more immersive and lovely than ever, the developers have recently announced the addition of facial expressions to the game. This will allow the characters that you interact with to be a bit more into what is going on. Now they can show sadness when a kitty runs away, or can be overjoyed at the mere sight of you.

Cats GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

The developers also mentioned that the new character models were easier to create with the new character creation system that was recently implemented. With all these amazing additions and changes, Calico is sure shaping up to be one of the most charming indie games of all time! Calico is set to be released sometime in mid-2020.

    More on Calico

For more information on Calico, you can check out their official website. To stay in tuned with what’s going in in development, you can follow the game on Twitter. For more adorable indie games, check out my coverage of what’s new in Ooblets.

Games like Magicians Quest Mysterious Times are the perfect way to almost scratch that Animal Crossing itch.

While Animal Crossing will always be the go to game when it comes to relaxing in a beautiful life sim world. But sometimes it can be nice to get out from under that crushing bell debt and give some other cute games a try. I have assembled a small list of games that scratch a similar itch to that of Animal Crossing.

    Magicians Quest: Mysterious Times

Magicians Quest: Mysterious Times is a life sim that very closely resembles Animal Crossing in the art style. The goal of the game is to become a master magician by learning and practicing a variety of spells and incantations. Often described as Harry Potter meets Animal Crossing, Mysterious Times was released in May of 2009 for the Nintendo DS.

    Animal Crossing like games

There have been three sequels made, but were only released in Japan. The games also happen to use the DS’s internal clock, so the player will encounter time-sensitive quests and events. Sound familiar? To get your hands on this one, you may have to use eBay or Amazon, and it might cost you a pretty penny. If you do some searching, you can probably still find a copy for reasonable price, as the game is becoming kind of rare.

    MySims

MySims is what happened when EA decided that they’d like to make a game as similar to Animal Crossing as they could. As per usual, the goal of MySims is build up a town that is in desperate need of some repair. Customize your character, then go about your days making your town as cool or crazy as you like.

With tons of customizations for your character as well as your buildings and even furniture, MySims is one cute game that is definitely worth a peek. You can buy it through Origin for $19.99. However, it should be noted that the game is a bit old, and the online capabilities have already been disabled.

    Castaway Paradise

For a game that was basically made to be a copy of Animal Crossing, Castaway Paradise is certainly cute and fun. But it’s not Animal Crossing. The game does take place on a tropical island, which makes it great practice for New Horizons. The graphics are almost voxel, and the color scheme is fun and vibrant.

Spend your time decorating your island, or do some farming for those ono grinds (Hawaiian for yummy food). Cataway Paradise is available on mobile devices, as well as PC, XboxOne and PS4. For more information on the game, as well as the chance to buy it for yourself, check out the official website.

    My Tamagotchi Forever

My Tamagotchi Forever is an adorable take on the original principle of the Tamagotchi.  Taking a first glance at the game, Animal Crossing fans will notice that the actual Tamagotchi pets look like something you would meet in the world of Animal Crossing. But this time around My Tamagotchi Forever packs a lot more features and activities to do.

While these two games are entirely different, there are some similarities, and it seems as if Bandai Namco tried to capture the spirit and cuteness of Animal Crossing in their latest mobile game. My Tamagotchi Forever is a free-to-play mobile game, and is available on iOS and Android.

    Ooblets

Ooblets is an adorable life sim farming game with a touch of creature collection. The creatures that you “collect” (actually you have to grow them yourself) are called Ooblets, and they love to dance. They are the most adorable little squishy creatures that jump at the opportunity to do your bidding. Use Ooblets to help with your day to day activities, as well as exploring and manipulating the world around you. More info.

    Cozy Grove

    Cozy Grove

If you have ever played Don’t Starve you will most likely be very familiar with the concept of Cozy Grove. For the ones who haven’t – much like in Don’t Starve – a survival game as the title already gives away, In Cozy Grove you will find yourself on a haunted island and you will be tasked to bring color back to it. The haunted island may appear empty and overtaken by florals but as you continue to explore and gather resources you will quickly begin to build up a new camp on the deserted and remote place and breath some life back into it. More info.

Snacko is an adorable farming simulation and adventure game we here at myPotatoGames have been keeping tabs on bluecurse’s updates. The indie studio is comprised of husband and wife Jordan and Erisa. In Snacko, you play as a cat named Momo who is determined to revive a once-populated island with many great resources and places to explore. The characters Momo and Mikan are even based off of the developers’ real-life cats!

Unfortunately, an error occurred during the live-stream on Twitch during Bitsummit 2019 and the Snacko trailer was nowhere to be found. Luckily, the developers have recently published the cat-tastic trailer which includes Momo farming, fishing, decorating (with ease might we add), spending time with friends, and enjoying seasonal festivities!

Snacko will be releasing sometime in 2021 on the Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam and itch.io). For more Tokyo Game Show 2019 related news, which also includes a pair of cat ears, check out our article here: Giraffe and Annika a Manga-Inspired RPG at Bitsummit 2019.

PAX West 2019 is over but we’re still following up on all the news! Epic Games Store announced some pretty colorful and whimsical games coming to their store that we wanted to share with you. These games are the following: Ooblets, No Straight Roads, Manifold Garden, Superliminal, Wattam, The Alto Collection, Airborne Kingdom, and The Eternal Cylinder. Of course, if you’ve been following us you’re already aware of Ooblets, so read on below for the other 7 games and to watch the epic trailer!

    No Straight Roads

Take back Vinyl City – with rock! Embark on a music-based action-adventure as indie rock band members Mayday & Zuke and lead a musical revolution against EDM empire No Straight Roads. After being unfairly rejected in their audition to join No Straight Roads, Mayday & Zuke uncover the evil intentions behind the NSR empire. It’s now down to them to save their city from corruption.

Enjoy fast & frenetic combat with a musical twist as these two aspiring rock artists fight back with the power of music! This action game is developed by Metronomik and will be available on Epic here sometime in 2020, and the PS4.

    Manifold Garden

Manifold Garden is a game that reimagines physics and space. Explore a world of beautiful Escher-esque architecture where the laws of physics are different. Geometry repeats infinitely in every direction and falling down leads you back to where you started. Manipulate gravity to change your perspective and see the world in new ways. Master the rules of the universe and restore a barren world with vegetation and life. In November 2012, William Chyr began working on Manifold Garden. Initially called Relativity, the game was inspired by the M.C. Escher print which depicts a world with multiple gravities.

In early 2015, Manifold Garden was backed by Indie Fund. Over the course of its development, the game has been shown in over 20 game conventions and festivals, including E3, Tokyo Game Show, Gamercamp, and IndieCade East. This puzzle and exploration game is coming soon on Epic (exclusive for 12-months) and the PS Store.

    Superliminal

A game inspired by forced perspective. In this mind-bending first-person puzzler, you explore a surreal dream world and solve impossible puzzles using the ambiguity of depth and perspective. Perception is reality. Superliminal is currently in development, by indie studio Pillow Castle, with a launch date to be announced soon. It debuted at Sense of Wonder Night at Tokyo Game Show in September, 2013.

Some of the creators’ inspiration includes Paprika, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Inception. The game was previously known as ‘Museum of Simulation Technology’. The game will be releasing on Epic in late 2019, with plans to release on Steam and consoles a year later.

    Wattam

A combination of the Japanese word (wa) and the Tamil word (vattam) for circle. Mayor is alone in a dark world with no memories, too sad to realize his dear friends are still nearby. However, an unexpected reunion helps him remember the joy in simply grabbing a friend by the hand and running off to adventure together. Join Mayor as he reunites with new and old friends and discover the forgotten joy of their world. Take control of a cast of characters by yourself or with a friend, transform into fruits & poops, climb to new heights, laugh, cry, tumble, and soar beyond the differences of words and thoughts to bring everyone together. Learn to have fun again!

Wattam is developed by Funomena, published by Annapurna Interactive, and created from the imagination of Keita Takahashi (creator of Katamari Damacy). Play solo or same-screen co-op to help Mayor rediscover the joys of friendship on December 2019 on Epic and PS4.

    The Alto Collection

The magic of Alto’s Adventure and Alto’s Odyssey is now coming to PC with The Alto Collection! Snowboard across beautiful alpine hills, or soar above windswept dunes on your sandboard with fluid and exhilarating physics-based gameplay. The vivid minimalist environments, original music and handcrafted audio make for an ambient and immersive experience (headphones recommended!). The Alto games are easy to learn, difficult to master one-button trick system where you can chain together combos to maximize points and speed!

Both of these stand-alone action games, developed by Noodlecake Studios, released last year on mobiles devices. You can check out Alto’s Odyssey on Google Play here and App Store here, and Alto’s Adventure on Google Play here and App Store here.

    Airborne Kingdom

Build your unique sky city, and fly it around a diverse landscape! Airborne Kingdom uniquely blends city management and exploration. Build housing, satisfy needs, and grow your clan. Maintain lift, explore for resources, and discover lost technologies. With a variety of peoples to interact with and a sprawling world to explore, every playthrough changes, along with your city and its values. Will you create a balloon flotilla based on faith, or a winged metropolis focused on entertainment, or will steam-powered fans fly your kingdom as you search for answers in the stars? The city, your journey, their lives — all of it is up to you to decide.

This strategy city-builder, developed by The Wandering Band, is one where you can change your play-style every game, with a sprawling, randomly-generated map to explore. Although, it is still in development and will be releasing on the Epic Games Store sometime in 2020.

    The Eternal Cylinder

In The Eternal Cylinder, players control a herd of adorable creatures called Trebhums and must explore a strange alien world filled with exotic lifeforms, surreal environments, and the constant threat of the Cylinder, a gargantuan rolling structure of ancient origin which crushes everything in its path. This unique ecosystem is a massive, procedurally generated land with unique animal AI, real-time world destruction, and organic exploration and puzzle design to create emergent gameplay that ensures no two playthroughs are ever the same.

This adorable survival game, developed by ACE Team and published by Good Shepherd Entertainment, will be releasing on the Epic Games Store and consoles sometime in 2020.

Note that most of these games are also coming to consoles, however there will be a period of PC exclusivity on the Epic Games Store before or if they ever release on Steam. Let us know which one of these games you are most excited to play!

Alchemy Story is coming to Steam Early Access this August 22nd and you’ll be able to transmute six villagers and complete the first part of the storyline. Meaning, there will be some adorable animals walking around town that were former humans but have been cursed by the Witch. They need your help to remember who they are! You’ll also get to farm, fish, garden, forage, chop some trees, mine, and brew potions. See below for Éloïse Laroche’s, the sole creator of the game, newest update which includes one last spellbound character and some other amazing new additions.

    Devlog – July 2019

After helping this mysterious cat complete his transmutation, all spellbound villagers will be liberated from the Witch’s curse! While the village will be restored, this doesn’t mean the end of your quest. On the contrary, a new chapter will begin once you meet the Witch…

Luckily, a few villagers weren’t spellbound and this fisherman, Aiden Luckywave, is one of them! You’ll be able to chat with him to get your first fishing pole, learn some fishing tips and complete deliveries to earn some gold.

Research and brew six new potions, such as the Forester Potion which will increase your luck when cutting down trees, or the Golden Brew to gain a random amount of gold when you drink it!

Unlock different outfits and hairstyles in the villager’s shops! Once an outfit is purchased, it’s placed in your dresser and you can change clothes from home. The plan is to add more clothes you can unlock from quests and secret areas around the village later on.

If you missed the last update for Alchemy Story, you can read our article here: Snacko, Alchemy Story, Ooblets, & Button City Indie Updates. You can also view some of our gameplay footage of an earlier demo of the game here: Alchemy Story – Demo Version Summary. Something that was mentioned in our demo was how adorable the chicks are with their little red bows so naturally we here at myPotatoGames will be all over that new in-game T-shirt.

Rolling Hills is a sushi simulation game where you own a restaurant, meet new characters, and form friendships. The game is created by indie developer Catch & Release who have done a complete overhaul of the previously mentioned “mini-game” players had to complete to make their sushi. Although many things have been changed or added, as explained in detail in their June Devlog, there has also been some work done on the conveyor belt we here at myPotatoGames where excited to learn more about.

“What felt like a big change a month ago now seems like small potatoes! When I talk to people about Rolling Hills, they normally say what excites them most is the prospect of being creative with their sushi making.”

    Matthew Taylor

    Conveyor Belt Sushi

Instead of someone coming in and telling you exactly what sushi roll they’d like to order, you’ll get to be more creative and find out what kind of ingredients they either love or hate. If you make a dish with that in mind and place it on your conveyor belt, customers will consider all dishes as they pass them by. Therefore, not all customers will be terribly picky unless they make a specific special request which you can either accept or refuse.

    New Cooking and Crafting Gameplay

The old way of making your sushi was to play a timed mini-game and then place the dish in your menu. As long as the dish was in your menu, you didn’t have to replay the mini-game. This was to give you the feeling of physically making your sushi by chopping/rolling. However, the developers say it lacked creativity that the fans ultimately wanted.

Now, as you are crafting your sushi and you add or take away ingredients, you can actually see the results of that change in your dish. You can even add condiments that change the dish in a variety of fun ways. This is definitely what was more exciting about Little Dragons Café in our opinion; changing the ingredients around.

If you mess up adding a dish to the menu, you can recall it from your conveyor belt! Phew, it won’t go to waste!

    Customer I.D. Cards

Customers no longer shout out their order so now there’s an I.D. card that displays when you interact with them. It shows their name, some stats that are still subject to change, and their ingredient preferences. The blacked out ones are ingredients they haven’t been served yet. It’s up to you to experiment and see what they like!

Rolling Hills is still in early development and does not yet have a release date but will be coming to Steam and the PlayStation Store. If you’re wondering what else is happening with other amazing indie games on our radar, check out Snacko, Alchemy Story, Ooblets, & Button City Indie Updates.
