Melbits World Pocket, created by Melbot, an indie studio in Spain, is all about multitasking, coordination, and solving puzzles by guiding the most adorable creatures called Melbits to the end of a mini-level. You can even customize these virtual pets with many options of accessories. The demo version is available now for free in English and in Spanish on iOS or Android mobile devices for the following regions: UK, Canada, Spain, and Malaysia. A particular member of the Potato family is Canadian so see below for gameplay footage and more information.

    About Melbits and Technology

Melbits are the embodiment of the “good vibes” we get from the internet or virtual world. The enemy characters that need to be avoided in the game are the opposite of that; viruses. As mentioned on the developer’s website: “Their vision was to blend the digital and physical worlds to create transmedia products and franchises that use technology in a magic way, with the noble intention of just making people have a good time.” The vibrant and colorful levels and Melbits do just that!

    A “virus” enemy

    Customizing Your Virtual Pets

When I first opened the app I was immediately greeted by bright and adorable creatures roaming around my screen. Creatures that I could engage with by customizing them with backpacks, hats, sunglasses, etc. You can even select one of four dance moves to give them, complete with different music playing in the background. They will cheerfully perform you dance selection for you at the end of a victorious level. Furthermore, you can take a selfie with them through Augmented Reality with your camera phone! This feature is indeed reminiscent of Tamagotchi and I can’t get enough of my cutest littlest pets. I’m hoping in the full version I will be able to collect more of them and obtain more accessories.

    High Scores and Collectibles

There are goodies to be collected in every level of Melbits World Pocket but I am uncertain of exactly what they do. If you have successfully guided the required amount of Melbits to the end of a level, your performance is rated with a score. Items gathered, Melbits saved, and time left from your timer (you can pick up hourglasses for more time), are all taken into consideration and added up. It is addictive to try and best your highest score and receive a “perfect” rating for every level. Perhaps it would be easier if the “tally” at the end stayed until you pressed a button and had an explanation that accompanied it.

    Perfect completion of Level 5

    Gameplay – Lemmings Inspired

In the demo you will have access to one world: Hobby Island. There are six levels to play through and one bonus level if you subscribe to their Melbits Club. You will see blue buttons and pink buttons that you can touch or slide. These will affect their corresponding colors of blocks or springs that are found in a level. Some will need to be used as platforms so as not to fall, others will propel your Melbits to greater heights.

Your Melbits will start appearing chaotically and walk toward the path they are facing until they either hit a dead end or each other, and turn around. If you have played the game Lemmings, you will know exactly what I mean. I have lead them straight to enemies and off the edges of cliffs on numerous occasions. Thankfully, they always return to me the next time I retry the level.

    Levels: Difficulty, Design, and Sound

Each level was unique with different sets of challenges, and boy were they challenging! Trying to keep on eye on so many things at once and getting the timing just right can be quite difficult to do. However, each level is short and easy to replay as there are no “lives” and major setbacks. My favorite level was Level 5 as I could rotate a block in several directions. That offered different options to arrive to the same goal. I can’t wait to see what different designs the creators come up with for different worlds. I hope they stay just as bright and as charming! The soundtrack is cute, upbeat, and catchy which suits the game perfectly. See below for a video of gameplay including Level 5.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he solo developer of Stardew Valley (Eric Barone of ConcernedApe) has recently made an exciting announcement. Stardew Valley will soon be available on iOS and Android! The game will be coming to iOS first, and will be released on the app store (where it can be pre-ordered) on the 24th October. The mobile version of the game is being overseen by London-based studio The Secret Police.

    About Stardew Valley:

Stardew Valley is a Harvest Moon-reminiscent RPG farming simulation with pixel graphics. Developed by ConcernedApe and published by Chucklefish, the game was very well received. It currently holds a 10/10 rating on Steam where it also has ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ reviews.

Some of the game’s features include:
    • Raising animals, growing crops and improving your farm
    • Improving skills in 5 different areas (farming, mining, combat, fishing, and foraging)
    • A variety of complex characters, places, enigmas, and secrets to discover
    • Diversity in character customization and dating
    • Over two hours of original music.
The game is already available to play on a wide variety of platforms including:
    • Microsoft Windows
    • Linux
    • Mac OS
    • PS4
    • Xbox One
    • Nintendo Switch
    • PS Vita

    About Stardew Valley for mobile:

Unfortunately, online multiplayer farming will not be available on iOS and Android. The port will, however, include all of the single player content from the recent 1.3 PC update.

The mobile versions have been optimized for touch screens, and contain a new UI, new controls, and a new menu system. Additionally, upon the game’s launch, players will be able to transfer their PC save data to iOS via iTunes.

Priced at $7.99 and with no in-app purchase options, the port is seemingly good value for money.

Eric Barone has said that the Android version of the game is nearly complete. He has also reassured gamers that work on multiplayer updates for consoles will be unaffected. This is because the console updates are being handled by teams separate from those working on the mobile versions.

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]rofessor Layton And The Curious Village was initially released by Level-5 for Nintendo DS in Japan in 2007. Fast forward to 11 years later, and Layton fans can play a remastered HD version of the enigmatic game on either iOS or Android.

The game features the gentlemanly Professor Hershel Layton, a puzzle-loving archaeologist, and his young assistant Luke Triton, an easily nettled boy with a huge appetite and an ability to talk to animals.

The first game has the duo searching on behalf of a wealthy widow for an elusive artefact supposedly hidden by her late husband, the Baron. Whoever finds the artefact will inherit the Baron’s immense wealth.

With a beautiful animation style synonymous of Level-5, captivating music and plenty of suspense and emotion, the game remains entertaining despite its age, hence why a remake was made.

The trailer for the polished puzzle game can be watched below.

    What is Guildlings?

[dropcap]G[/dropcap]uildlings is an upcoming mobile game for both iOS and Android. Currently in development by Sirvo, (the creator of ‘Threes!’), the single-player episodic adventure game is set to be released this summer. Combining ‘Wizards and Wi-Fi’, Guildlings (alongside upcoming magic school games Ikenfell and Witchbrook ) capitalises on the popular combination of teen angst and wizardry.

    Overview

With amazing graphics, beautiful audio, and a focus on story, Guildlings is split into chapters, and is designed for longer play sessions than most mobile games. The JRPG game has you play as Coda, a home-schooled teen with a cursed smartphone. Recruiting your friends as Guildlings, you utilise their magical powers in an attempt to rid yourself of the curse, whilst also saving the world.

    Gameplay

Gameplay combines exploration, conversation and non-traditional combat, which are connected by a mood-based character system. Each of your Guildlings  have their own unique powers. However, in the realm of Worldaria, magic is driven by emotions.  Essentially, your Guildlings can only use magic when they are feeling a certain way (eg confident). Therefore if your Guildling is afraid when they need to be confident, your task as a Guildmaster is to figure out how to influence their emotions and mood.

    A sneak-peak of Chapter One

The first chapter offers players the ability to:

    • Embark on a grand Quest to Save the World
    • Reunite with long-lost friends
    • Duel with a grumpy kitchen appliance
    • Navigate a maze of trashbag-crabs
    • Annoy your big sister by insulting her love life
    • Collect tons of gold then spend it all on snacks
    • Snap selfies at the mysterious Makeout Temple
    • Narrowly avoid being crushed by a giant apocalyptic bird (?!)

    Influences and Goals

Guildlings was inspired by games such as Earthbound, and interactive narratives like 80 days. It was also influenced by the much-loved Studio Ghibli films and globally adored Harry Potter franchise.

The game’s developers have said that their two major goals upon starting Guildlings were:

    1. To build a fun, inspiring coming-of-age adventure for mobile.
    2. To make the phone feel like a small portal into a large fantasy world.

    More info

You can read more about the game (and obtain a free Guildlings mobile wallpaper) here.

[dropcap]N[/dropcap]intendo are always attempting to better their popular mobile game, we’ll give them that. Whether it’s the variety of regular in-game events, or free leaf tickets to compensate for bugs (not the type you can catch with a net!), the big N seem to know what makes fans tick.

This morning, an in-app news announcement hinted at what the next game update would entail.

    The Market Box

Players will soon have the opportunity to sell items in their market box to everyone, or just their friends. This is something I’m looking forward to, as I often have things lingering in my market box for weeks. As well as being a helpful money-making tool, this will also help players buy items they desperately need in order to complete animal quests.

    Powered up friends list

Ever forgotten to return the favour of helping your friends in the Shovelstrike quarry? The next update will alert players when a friend needs help with the Shovelstrike quarry, meaning players don’t have to open their friends list and scroll through every friend (a time-consuming task if you have many friends). This means you are less likely to forget to reciprocate your friends’ good deeds, and thus keep your Pocket Camp friends sweet.

Lick of paint for the log-in bonus

It has also been announced that the log-in Bonus display will be given a fresh look with a new design.

    Old design:

    Sample new design:

Note: the style shown in the above image is only a sample, and content is still subject to change.
