Latest Pokemon Sword/Shield reveal introduces Poke Jobs and form changing Pokemon.

There have been plenty of awesome updates lately about what to expect from the next installment in the Pokemon series. The more recent introduction of some new Pokemon being among them. Now the Pokemon Company has given us much more details in regards to some of the new features that we will see in Pokemon Sword/Shield, including new characters and monsters with unique abilities.

    Poke Jobs

Since always and forever, Pokemon have been super handy little creatures that have helped us accomplish wonders and achieve our grandest dreams. Now, our sometimes not-so-cuddly companions will have the ability to help us in new ways with Poke jobs. You will be able to task your calamitous critters with jobs from the Rotomi machine, a new device located throughout the the Galar region in all of the Pokemon Centers. These machines will not only give you access to the jobs (which will help you and your Pokemon grow), but you also be able to access your storage and even the Lotto-ID. Figuring out which Pokemon is best suited for each job will maximize the outcome of each task.

    Form Changing Pokemon

Pokemon have always been able to change form. Until now, those changes were pretty much exclusive to Evolution. The latest iteration in the Pokemon series introduces a new type of Pokemon that has the ability to change its form without evolution. The change can be effected by certain items (like evolution) but can also come from the creatures very own abilities. Not only can these changes alter the appearance of the monsters, but can also change their abilities and moves type. Morpeko is a new monster with the ability to change form. It is a ravenous little cutie that changes into meanie any time it gets too hungry, like most of us.

    Galarian Forms

Some Pokemon in Sword/Shield will actually have forms that are specific to the region. Given that the game takes place in the Galar Region, these are obviously referred to as Galarian forms. These specific forms can not only be found just in Galar, but their evolutions can also only exist from the Galarian form of that Pokemon. Example: the new Obstagoon can only be obtained through the max evolution of the Galarian form of Zigzagoon. Otherwise, you will not be able to evolve past Linoone.

    Team Yell – New Rivals

Some new bad guys will also be coming to the Pokemon universe, and they look pretty hardcore. They are called Team Yell, and they have absolutely no trouble announcing their intentions. They are the new baddies and are here to hinder you in any way possible, much like the ne’er-do-well’s of every other title in the series. Always putting up a lackluster front to keep you from reaching the opponents that actually matter, the Gym Leaders and other close heavy trainers.

Destiny Connect: Tick-Tock Travelers is a beautiful game about a town called Clocknee, and a little girl named Sherry who is trying to save it.  Everything is proceding as normal on December 31, 1999, until the clock strikes midnight. What should have brought in the year 2000, instead freezes the entire town of Clocknee in time. Even the New Year’s fireworks are frozen in the sky above them.

Destiny Connect: Tick-Tock Travelers fireworks in Clocknee

And while everything stops for the people and time itself in that moment, Sherry is not frozen in time.  Nor are the machines.  When everything else froze, all of the machines came to life!  Televisions, toasters…all manner of ordinary appliances…become robots Sherry has to face in turn-based combat.

    Beautiful art, beautiful music

The character art style of Destiny Connect is highly reminiscent of a Pixar movie.  We were pleasantly reminded of Toy Story when we were enjoying the sights of picturesque Clocknee alongside Sherry. And check out the official site to get an earful of that beautiful soundtrack!

The main characters we’ve met so far are stuffed with personality.  Sherry is a tough but headstrong little girl, and her friend Pegreo is smart and sensible, but very timid.

But even if she finds companions along the way, what could a handful of children possibly do, to start time flowing in Clocknee again?  To her surprise, she learns that her father had a robot in his office.  The robot’s name is Isaac, and he can time-travel.

Left with no other options, Sherry must make use of Isaac’s abilities and travel to the past (and the future!) to try to figure out what went wrong in Clocknee.  We look forward to being alongside her to help solve the mystery…and to enjoy the game’s beautiful soundtrack the whole while.

The release date for Destiny Connect: Tick-Tock Travelers is October 22, and will be available on Switch and PS4. Watch an overview trailer here! If you’re intrigued by games where you can time-travel, check out Mr. Tic Toc & the Endless City.

Journey was an award winning multiplayer adventure game for PlayStation 3. First released in 2012 it quickly became one of the most fascinating and beautiful games on the PS3. Now the game makes a surprise appearance on iOS for iPhone and iPad users.

The award winning game takes the player on an engaging journey through a beautifully crafted 3D world. The game is a mix between traditional platformers as well as intriguing puzzle games. This unique mix of features and game genres made Journey so very popular in the PlayStation 3 era.

Journey also features a native online multiplayer experience where you will randomly meet other players from all over the world. There is no communication other than simple emotes which makes helping or receiving help from other players even more interesting.

Now with the release on mobile, players will be able to revisit or even enjoy this gem of a game in the palm of our hands.

Journey is now available on iOS, you can grab it on the Apple App Store for $4.99. Android users may have to wait a little longer, we have reached out to the developers for more clarification when the game might come to other mobile platforms.

Check out the wonderful Journey trailer below! ( PS3 version)

    Journey iOS announcment

Sky looks and feels quite a bit like Journey, but with more people. Up to 8 players can join a session through their smartphone or tablet. These groups feel big, but not massive; busy but not totally unwieldy. There’s a logic to their size: Chen hopes Sky will be a game entire families play together.

Of course, he clarifies, people can also play alone. Some puzzles require 8 players to cooperate, but Chen recognizes that sometimes collaborating with seven friends can be a bit like “wrangling cats.”

I doubt anybody will want to play alone though. Sky recaptures that beautiful mix of playfulness and performance of its predecessor. I can’t yell over voice chat; instead I must communicate with audible pings and gestures.

Reaching over 20% of their goal in under 48hrs, To The Rescue has already seen much of the love it intends to share.

To The Rescue is an absolutely adorable 2D game about running a dog shelter full of crazy-cute canines. It is a wonderful project in the works by the team at Little Rock Games, a small independent studio located (obviously) in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Kickstarter has only just begun, so it’s not too late to get in on sharing the love early enough to be an Early Dog and receive special gifts, like a copy of the game, as well getting to name your very own dog in To The Rescue!

A bit about To The Rescue

In “To The Rescue”, the goal of the of the game is to treat all of your doggies real nice, so that they may reach a place where they are ready for forever homes. But it’s not all “cuddles and snoot boops”, as the devs mention. There are many to-do’s in your day to day that help ensure the best environment for each of your unique and charming doggos. The ultimate goal is to match each of your dogs traits with the proper traits of your visitors, making sure they go to a comfortable forever home.

    To The Rescue

For much more information on the game as well as the opportunity to be a part of the development and receive all the updates on production, you can go to their Kickstarter page here! And don’t forget to wishlist on Steam, and check them out on Twitter!

The first Cook, Serve, Delicious! game came to PC and mobile devices in 2013. Selling more than a million copies, it was more than popular enough to warrant a sequel. Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2 was released for PC, Switch, PS4 and Xbox One, as well as Mac and Linux.

Now we have word that a third entry into the series will be entering the Early Access phase in January 2020. It even has a listing on Steam already! At myPotatoGames, we’re always into a good cooking game, but the food in Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3 looks so tasty that we fear that playing it may expand not only our cooking repertoire, but also our waistlines.

Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3 - Beef Sunrise Asian food bowl
We could go for one of these RIGHT NOW.

Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3 is set in a war-torn country that is what remains of the United States’ in 2042. But you can still make gorgeous-looking food from all over the world. Noodle bowls, ratatouille, ice cream, grilled-cheese sandwiches, poutine…oh my! (Please ignore the drooling potatoes behind the screen.) The world of traveling cuisine has become quite rough in 2042. In this version, you will occasionally need to defend your food truck from competitors. If you don’t, you could lose time on the way to the country’s new capital city of Nashville, Tennessee. There you must take part in a cooking contest to prove that you are the best in the world!

Vertigo Gaming Inc hopes to have Cook, Serve, Delicious 3! in early access for 6 to 8 months and be able to release the full version in Q3 of 2020. No word yet on which platforms the completed game will be available.

For more deliciously related news, Cooking Mama is coming back! And it’s going to be on Nintendo Switch!

What is Rune Factory? Here is everything you need to know!

The first Rune Factory game came out in Japan in 2006.  When localized in North America in 2007, it was called Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon.  If you haven’t played any Rune Factory games, you may wonder what ‘a fantasy Harvest Moon’ entails.

Those of us who are already fans of Rune Factory know the answer to these questions. However, the niche series came to the attention of a much larger group of people when it was seen in the February 2019 Nintendo Direct.  People who had never even heard of it before were then asking “Rune Factory?  What’s that?”

That question has even been asked by fans of the Bokujou Monogatari series (Initially localized as Harvest Moon in English but renamed to Story of Seasons when the localization team changed from Natsume to XSeed.)  What does it mean that it is a ‘fantasy Harvest Moon’?  Is it the same game, except in a fantasy setting?  Today, we’re here to answer that question.

Is it the same as Harvest Moon?

Rune Factory started as a spin-off and does have many of the same elements as Bokujou Monogatari (often abbreviated as Bokumono).  It too is a life simulation game where you run a farm, and can build relationships with townfolk and even get married and have a child.  But being in a fantasy world with magic and monsters is not the only difference between the two.  Because Rune Factory has magic and monsters, and because you play a set character rather than creating your own, the gameplay is actually quite different.

farming in rune factory 4 special
Farming in Rune Factory 4 Special on Switch

In Rune Factory, you don’t create your own avatar character. Rather, you play a set character…the protagonist of the story.  In the first Rune Factory, you played as Raguna.  Each game has its own protagonist, and though you can choose to change their name at the beginning, you can’t change who they are.

Rune Factory 4 on 3DS marks the first time in the series that you had an option between a male or a female protagonist on start-up, but they, too, are set characters, with the default name of the male version of the main character being Lest and the default name of the female version being Frey.

Rune Factory 4’s Lest and Frey

Being unable to create your own character is because, unlike Bokumono…where the idea is some variation of coming to own a farm and making it a success, sometimes revitalizing the whole town in the process… Rune Factory is based on a larger plot.

You can do more than farm

Farming isn’t the only thing you’re there to do.  To set right anything that has gone wrong in the world, you must also fight monsters, navigate dungeons and win boss battles.

To do this, you’ll need a broader range of skills than you do for farming alone.  You will also need to hone not just your combat skill in your chosen weapon styles (you can change your weapon style at any time), but also your blacksmithing, cooking and magical abilities, as well as many more. For the most part you make use of your own weapons, armour, accessories, health potions, and so on.  You start at level 1 in each skill, but can level up to 99 in all of them.

The latest game, Rune Factory 4, has over 30 individual skills.  Raising them not only makes you better at that skill, it will also provide benefits to your base stats, such as making you physically or magically stronger, tougher, or more enduring.  As you raise your skills, you will find yourself able to make better weapons (and food and armour, etc) out of better ingredients dropped from higher-level monsters and crops.

    You can tame monsters

You can also tame the monsters you meet by petting and feeding them. Once tamed, you can keep them as companions, training them to fight at your side.  Each monster has its own skill set, and you can add them to your party in a similar way to how you can add your fellow villagers to your party.  (If you have a spouse and a child, you can even add both of them to your party and go out and fight as a family!) Some will do physical or elemental damage to your enemies, some from close range and others from a distance.

You can even tame boss monsters, like huge dragons. Some can be harvested for great ingredients every day, like milk, eggs, and honey. You can also reap crafting ingredients like fur and fangs.  Keeping a variety of monsters and taking good care of them to raise their affection for you can be a huge help in winning battles as well as in crafting. You can even enter your monster friends into some festivals.

fighting monsters in rune factory 4 3DS
Fighting monsters in Rune Factory 4 on 3DS
Fighting monsters in RF4S on Switch

    But you do still farm!

Like Bokumono, you do also farm (and have some magical crops in the mix!) and cook and socialize, and get married, too, if you want to. If you want to make a name for yourself as a farmer, you can! But you can also concentrate more on being a smith or a fighter. It’s your choice what to excel in. The pacing of a Rune Factory game is like Bokumono in that you’re in charge of how fast you progress. You decide what you want to spend your time on.  You will need to be able to fight efficiently, but there are many ways to win battles. Maybe you’re a close-up fighter, or a distance fighter , or even a magic user. Or maybe you’d rather have the strongest companions, who can do most of the damage for you.

Do you need to start with the first Rune Factory game?

Nope!  Rune Factory games are not directly connected.  They all take place in the same ‘world’, but not in the same region, and most involve completely different casts of characters.  You should feel free to start with Rune Factory 4 Special, even if you’ve never played any of the previous games in the series.

Is “RF4S” just a Switch port of RF4 on 3DS?

It isn’t a straight port.  It’s a remaster with some added content. The graphics have been improved so that they will look great on your television. RF4S is listed for release in North America sometime in 2019 (‘this winter’ for Europe) and is already out in Japan. Several Japanese-speaking spud-sympathizers have been asked about their experience playing RF4S and say they’re surprised just how good the game looks on the television screen.

A ‘Honeymoon Mode’ has also been added to the game, where you will be able to experience new scenes with marriage candidates. So even players who have completed RF4 in the past will have some new content to look forward to in RF4S!

    In Conclusion…

We at myPotatoGames are a little envious of those of you who haven’t played Rune Factory 4, yet.  It would be wonderful to be able to experience all the amazing content of RF4 (with the additional content and improved graphics of RF4S) for the first time again.  All of the potatoes in this patch are eagerly awaiting the upcoming release of Rune Factory 4 Special so that we can dive back into a favourite game yet again.

And some of us can’t even speak coherently about how excited we are that Rune Factory 5 (the game that officially brings the abandoned series back to life under the hand of the original creator!) is set for Japanese release in 2020.  Can it possibly live up to RF4, when that is a game that many of the series’ fans feel is not just the best the series has ever seen, but is even a contender for their favourite game of all time?

With 7 years of waiting under our belts so far, we sure want to find out! We want to so badly that we even had to compile a lists of games we can fill our time with in the meantime.
