[dropcap]N[/dropcap]intendos Mario Kart 8 is finally out, and has quickly become one of the most sold games of the year on Amazon. The retailer lists the game as the third most sold game of 2017, ahead of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Mario kart 8 Deluxe comes packed with all the DLC released so far. The Animal Crossing Track is part of this package, and is one of the most unique racing course in Mario Kart 8.

The track features 4 different seasons, each comes with it’s own unique look and music. Whenever you play the track, the season is chosen randomly. But there is a way to trigger the season of your choice. When you create a race, you will have to hold down one of the 4 shoulder buttons on the joy-con to trigger the desired season.

    • zR triggers Winter
    • R triggers Summer
    • zL triggers Autumn
    • L triggers Spring

Now, whenever you create a new race you will be able to chose the weather and season you prefer. The Animal Crossing Racing Track in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the only track that comes in 4 different styles. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is now available on Nintendo Switch.

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]ith the release of a new Nintendo system, a new Mario Kart was bound to follow shortly after. Nintendo didn’t disappoint at all, though, with the short lifespan of the Wii U, it was unlikely we’d see a brand new one. Instead, we received an enhanced port of Mario Kart 8 for the Switch. While many may argue that this was a questionable move for Nintendo, the game is being well received. So with that, let’s dive into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to see how it really holds up in the series.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe title screen with Link

    Slightly jarring, isn’t it?

    Mario Kart Racing Content

Before even starting up the game, it’s clear that Mario Kart was never really geared toward single-player experiences. The game does alright on this front, but it can only really do so by substituting in computers for you to play with. This is a game that’s always preferable with more players. Thankfully, we do have an online mode to help with that, but we’ll get back to that in a bit.

So in Grand Prix mode, Nintendo gave us five difficulty modes and 12 cups with 4 courses each to play with. The difficulties affect the speed of the karts, the viciousness of the CPUs and can even flip the course like a mirror image. The courses have a lot of variety to them, ranging from a subway to a deep and mysterious forest. Some courses are mostly underwater, some are in outer space, and at least one is inside an active volcano. There’s even a number of courses that reference other games, like Zelda, Animal Crossing, Excitebike, and even F-Zero! All of this content is also available for Versus races, but instead of playing full cups, you play individual tracks. You can also play in team races or time trials, but series veterans will already know that.

    Changes

In fact, the new additions to the racing aspects of the game are fairly minimal. They mostly take the form of changes in mechanics and the items available to racers. Among these changes are the tweaks made to certain car parts, adding more variety to the builds players can craft. There’s also the purple drift sparks, which allow you to get a third and even more powerful drift boost as you come around corners. It’s especially interesting because the changes are difficult to notice for some of the less-skilled players. Higher level players will likely appreciate the changes to the gameplay, though.

    Purple drift sparks

Dry Bowser showing off those purple drift sparks.

    Accessibility

On the note of skill, this games actually introduces a couple of safety nets for newer or less able players. These come in the form of smart steering and auto-acceleration. This means you don’t have to press the A-button to go and you don’t have to be a great player to avoid falling off the track. You can basically play without even touching the controller! This has some great side effects, meaning that nearly anyone can play. (We have an article here showing exactly that.)

Of course, you don’t have to worry about that making the game more unbalanced for the more skilled players. As it turns out, if you have smart steering on, you can’t get the third-tier drift boost. And of course, if you’re not pressing the A-button with auto-accelerate on, you’ll still go slower than you would’ve, otherwise. It reminds us of Mario Kart Wii. You could choose to have the game automatically drift whenever you turned, making your turns sharper, but this meant you wouldn’t get the drift boost.

With that said, it’s somewhat annoying that these options are automatically turned on, whenever you first play. You have to manually turn these options off in the vehicle select when looking at your stats. (You can also turn these off in the in-game pause menu, but that’ll probably annoy the other players more.) Of course, we realize that the players more likely to find these options will be the ones that want to turn them off, so it’s an understandable design choice.

    Mario Kart Battle Content

This is where Mario Kart 8 Deluxe really stands apart from the Wii U version. In the original, battle mode was a selection of courses from the racing side of things. In the Switch version, the developers gave this game the battle courses it deserved. There are eight in total, and it’s clear they were designed as arenas. On top of that, they added a new battle mode called Renegade Roundup.

In Renegade Roundup, players are split into two teams. One team chases the others with piranha plants while the other must avoid them. It’s basically cops and robbers. When caught, players will be placed in cages, which other renegades can unlock by driving under them. The law wins if all renegades are caught, and the renegades win if time runs out, first. This happens to be one of my favorite modes, though it may help that I played this on the Dragon-Driftway-inspired battle course. It seemed to work very well on that stage.

    Renegade Roundup images

Renegade Roundup from both sides of the field.

Other stages include Luigi’s Mansion, a block-based arena like in Super Mario Kart, Sweet Sweet Castle, a moon base, Urchin Underpass (from Splatoon), Wuhu Town (think Wii Sports), and the Battle Stadium (which isn’t really based on anything). Each one clearly has strengths and weaknesses. Shine Thief, for instance, seems to work very well in Urchin Underpass and Wuhu Town, but leads to a lot of cheese on Battle Stadium.

    Online

That’s right, online is also a big part of this game. There’s once again little that is truly new, here. It works very much as it did on the Wii U, though perhaps a little more stable. The online does its job, to be sure, but one change to the system allows you to switch your kart setup while in the lobby. This allows players to be a little more strategic about their setup based on the stages available. If players wanted to do this in the Wii U version, they would have to leave the lobby to change your setup. That’s a certainly an improvement!

    Conclusion

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a remake of Mario Kart 8, but with many of the major glaring flaws fixed. Characters that were clearly missing have been returned and the online is less of a pain to deal with. The game is at once more accessible and yet more competitive. The graphics are just as good and the soundtrack is as amazing as ever (with bonus points for adding “Splattack!” from Splatoon).  Most importantly, battle mode is back and better than ever with new stages and new modes. Our gripes with this title are relatively few. If you didn’t have a Wii U or Mario Kart 8 before, this is a big recommendation.

[dropcap]Z[/dropcap]elda: Breath of the Wild will soon receive it’s first DLC. The expansion pass will  bring two major updates. The first one being released this summer, while the second pack is going to be released this holiday season. Nintendo has just announced some new details about the Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion pass. The first part of the expansion pass will include the new Trial of the Sword, in which you can encounter enemies in 45 different rooms. If you complete this, the Master Sword will remain in it’s glowing form forever.

You can read the details about the Master Trials DLC below. If you didn’t buy the pass yet, you can do so here.

    • Trial of the Sword: By accessing this location, players can challenge the new Trial of the Sword (previously known as “Cave of Trials Challenge”), where enemies appear one after another. Link starts without any armor or weapons, and if he defeats all of the enemies in the room he can proceed to the next area. Trial of the Sword will include around 45 total rooms for players to complete. When Link clears all of the trials, the true power of the Master Sword will awaken and always be in its glowing powered-up state.
    • Hard Mode: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is already considered one of the most thrilling games in The Legend of Zelda series, and fans looking for a challenge are in for a treat with the new Hard Mode. In Hard Mode, the “ranks” of enemies in the game are increased (i.e. Red Bokoblins change to Blue), and players might even encounter higher-ranking enemies they wouldn’t find through normal play. Enemies will also slowly recover health in battle, forcing you to defeat them more quickly. They will also more easily spot Link as he approaches them, making these enemies tougher to sneak up on. In addition, floating planks held aloft by balloons will be scattered around Hyrule. By successfully reaching these planks, players can battle enemies and collect treasure.
    • Hero’s Path Mode: Exploring Hyrule is exciting, but with such a large world it’s sometimes hard for players to remember where they’ve been. To help with tracking progress, the new Hero’s Path Mode will document every step players take, and mark their path in green on the map. The route taken will be tracked for the player’s last 200 hours of play time, with an included slider to track footsteps on a timeline. This even works retroactively, so players that have already put many hours into the game will be able to see where they have traveled. This feature will help in identifying the locations they haven’t visited in this vast world, and may help players find those Shrines they haven’t encountered yet.
    • Travel Medallion: There will be a new treasure chest somewhere in the game world which contains the Travel Medallion. With the Travel Medallion, players can create a temporary new travel point on the map where they are currently standing. Link can then transport himself to that point at any time. Only one travel point can be registered on the map at a time.
    • Korok Mask: By finding the new Korok Mask, players will have a much easier time finding Korok locations in the game. When equipped, the mask will shake, indicating that a Korok is hidden somewhere nearby.
    • New Equipment: Eight new pieces of equipment inspired by previous characters and games in the series will be added to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild after downloading the first DLC pack. Once discovered by the player, they will yield equipment themed after fan-favorite games and characters such as Midna, Tingle, Phantom and Majora’s Mask.

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t is no surprise that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a big win for Nintendo. However, how big of a win is it?

The game has sold 459,000 combined package and digital sales since it’s launch on April 28th. This sets a new record for the fastest selling title in the Mario Kart series. The previous record holder for the highest first-day sales in the franchise was Mario Kart Wii, with U.S. sales of approximately 433,900 when it launched in 2008. The sales of Mario Kart 8 deluxe equate to a 45% attach rate. What this means is that nearly one in two switch owners in the United States owns Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

The reviews for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are off the charts. It is currently sitting at a nice 93 on Metacritic. The score is the highest that the franchise has seen in 15 years-tying the score of Mario Kart: Super Circuit for Game Boy Advance. The game has also surpassed the Zelda: Breath of the Wild sales on amazon!

With Legend of Zelda and now Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Nintendo is primed for a great start going into the summer, with E3 being later this year.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]omorrow, SKIPMORE is going to drop KAMIKO, a 2D action-adventure game, on the eShop. There’s a lot about this game that’s not obvious from the title or description. Lucky for us, this game has already been out on the Japanese eShop for two weeks. So once again, we’ll be giving you an idea of what to expect if you choose to pick it up.

    Gameplay and Objective

If the gameplay looks familiar to you, there’s a good reason for that. This game takes a lot of pointers from the Zelda series. In particular, this game seems to have extremely similar combat to A Link to the Past.

    See the similarities?

This character swings her sword like Link.

From the start, this game allows you to pick one of three characters to use, each with a different weapon of choice and abilities. Hopefully, that’ll add some great replayability because all reports thus far attest to this being a very short game.

Levels appear to have a rinse-and-repeat format of looking for four gates in each level to open the way to a boss encounter. Monsters appear suddenly as you wander around each level, and secrets and puzzles are everywhere.

    Graphics and Sound Design

While KAMIKO reminds us of Zelda in the gameplay department, the look and sound of the game share far more in common with indie classics like Cave Story. There’s a bright feel to the sprites used in the game. The music is in chiptune, similar to VVVVVV. I definitely think some of these songs will be stuck in my head by the time I finish this game.

    Lava World

The art style is pretty cute, actually.

    Thoughts on KAMIKO

KAMIKO is a 2D top-down action-adventure title with simplistic graphics, chiptune tracks, and a Zelda-like feel to the gameplay. It’s being published by Flyhigh Works and was developed by SKIPMORE. The title has a low price point at just $4.99 in the US, which makes up for the lack of length to the game. That length doesn’t necessarily hurt the game, though, as it seems very replayable, and can easily give new players at least an afternoon of good times.

KAMIKO makes its way onto the Nintendo Switch eShop on April 27th. We’ve linked gameplay of the first level below for anyone that wants to know more.

[dropcap]E[/dropcap]3 is the annual video games convention in California. For the first time the event will be open to the public. E3 is the second Christmas for every gamer in the world, with dozens of new announcements, gameplay footage and in-depth information about everyones favorite video games. Reggie, president of Nintendo North America has promised “we’re gonna have a big E3 this year”. The company will occupy an equal amount of space compared to Sony and Microsoft at the convention center in Los Angeles this year for the first time. Here are our Nintendo E3 Predictions.

    Pikmin 4

Hey! Pikmin has just ben re-announced for the Nintendo 3DS with a first trailer and some more details. Pikmin 4 is in development for quite some time Miyamoto said, but no details have been given on the video game. It is safe to assume that it will be a Nintendo Switch game, and chances are we will hear more about it at this years Nintendo E3 event.

    Likelihood – Hot ?

    Smash Brothers Switch

Super Smash Brothers on the Nintendo 3DS has sold more than 8 Million copies since it’s release in October 2014, making the game the most popular releases in it’s franchise. Smash Bros would make a perfect fit on the Nintendo Switch with couch co-op as well as online multilayer options. A new Smash Bros on the Nintendo Switch is happening sooner or later, the question will be whether Nintendo is ready to announce the game yet or not.

    Likelihood – Low

    Animal Crossing Switch

Animal Crossing is one of the most beloved franchises on any Nintendo system. With the latest game released in 2012, Nintendo sold more than 10 Million copies and has managed to extend it’s fanbase by millions. It is sure that a new Animal Crossing will come to the Nintendo Switch. Reggie has also been making vague comments, further fueling the rumors. As he states “our philosophy at Nintendo is to have one great experience of each franchise on each console. So, in the future, who knows when – you can anticipate that all our big franchises will be addressed”. The last Animal Crossing release is more than 5 years ago, a new game could be teased at this years E3.

    Likelihood – Medium

    Animal Crossing Mobile

The Animal Crossing Smartphone app has been delayed several times. Now the app is left with no concrete release date. Rumors are emerging that Nintendo delayed the app in order to be able to announce it alongside a new Animal Crossing game on the Nintendo Switch. The developers have stated at the beginning, that the app would tie in with another Animal Crossing game which could be New Leaf, or a whole new experience on the Switch.

    Likelihood – Medium

Zelda Breath of the Wild Expansion Details

The Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass is currently on sale for $19.99 on the Nintendo eShop. While most details like a new difficulty and dungeons have been announced, Nintendo could further detail the pass, and perhaps add some more features to it. While this is a far stretch, Zelda fans can always hope!

    Likelihood – Low

    Metroid Prime

Fans of the series have been waiting for a new main series game a long time. The E3 could make a great opportunity to tease a new Metroid game for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo had announced a spin off game of the beloved Metroid series at the E3 in 2015. Metroid Prime: Federation Force was released on August 19th of 2016 on the Nintendo 3ds, but never became as popular as the main Metroid Prime games. The game was received poorly with a Metacritic score of 64%.

    Likelihood – Medium

    Snipper Clips Expansion

Sniperclips: Cut it Out together is one of the best Switch launch titles. It brings people together, has an adorable look and is showcasing what the Nintendo Switch represents the best – from all games available so far. The game is still #1 on the eShop charts. However Snipperclips comes with only 61 stages which most of them can be completed rather quickly. Given the huge success of the game, it will be interesting to see if Nintendo plans to further support the game with a DLC pack. If you like you can read our review and take on Snipperclips here.

    Likelihood – Medium

    Pokémon Stars

The recently announced Pokémon on Nintendo Switch has been in the dark since Nintendo first put the Pokémon logo on the list of games coming to the new hybrid console. No details or further information have been given on the highly anticipated Pokémon game. Chances are Nintendo will use the E3 to tease the video game a little more.

    Likelihood – Hot ?

    Mario Odyssey

The game is set for a release this Holiday season, but all we have seen so far was a trailer and minimal details on the gameplay. Nintendo will most likely use it’s moment of fame at the E3 to further showcase the next installment in the Mario franchise.

    Likelihood – Hot ?

    3rd Party Developers

3rd Party developers will most likely use the E3 to highlight their latest Nintendo Switch games as well. Not much is known about the upcoming Story of Seasons on the Switch. Stardew Valley on the other hand is going to be released this Summer with a Multiplayer mode on Nintendos latest console.

Bethesda is expected to release some The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim footage running on the Switch. And last but not least Dragon Quest XI will be released on 3DS and Playstation 4 on July 29th with the Switch release a little later, it is possible that Square Enix, developer behind the game will show some first footage of the game running on the Switch.

Electronic Arts may show some more Fifa 18 gameplay, as they promised it will not be a port, but a dedicated game for the Switch, it may be exciting to see how EA adjusts the popular soccer game to the hybrid console! If appropriate we will update the list as we get closer to this years E3.
