Nintendo Switch Success – Continues Outselling the Competition

svgApr 26, 2017NewsMax

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Nintendo Switch continues to outsell the competition, even with limited availability in stores. Nintendos new console has managed to sell twice as many systems every week – compared to any other console in Japan since it’s launch. There is a great importance to these numbers, as 3rd party developers will be more  motivated to release games on a system that has a big fanbase. The Nintendo Switch Success continues, and the console certainly looks like it’s on the right path.

This is mixed news for me. I appreciate that Nintendo’s ‘gamble’ is resonating so well, but I don’t like the artificial scarcity model the continue to employ with products. I’m not sure the benefit out weighs the cost for Nintendo anymore. This is an industry norm (see TY Beanie Babies, Furby, Elmo, Disney Vault, etc)
As I see, the main benefit is that they are still a must have item because they are rare. This makes people covet an item more strongly and keeps prices higher.

    The costs I see are
    1) Middleman/scalpers taking advantage of customers who want a product
    a) Profit doesn’t go to Nintendo
    b) Scalpers make money and continue to buy as much as possible to make more money increasing scarcity
    c) People can’t afford to get something
    2) No impulse purchase
    a) If there isn’t a product on the shelf, I can’t just pick it up on impulse
    3) Frustration within the Customer base
    a) The lose interest over time and might not buy it later at all, or worse steer clear from an entire ecosystem/company
    b) People seek other methods of entertainment and spend money elsewhere

Nintendo has had a major scarcity problem the last few years. Between Amiibos, Collectors Editions, the NES Classic Mini, and now the Switch Nintendo has put many of its fan base into high frustration and heavily profited the eBay sellers at their expense.

Heck I lucked out and got a hold of an NES Classic Mini and I haven’t opened it yet. I want to play it a relive my youth and let my kids use it, but on the other hand the eBay profits are reminding me I could buy a lot more stuff by selling it. I would feel guilty selling it, and guilty playing it. In some ways makes me wish I didn’t have it, which makes me uncomfortable and not sure what I think of a company that regularly places me in this love/hate position.
