Build a Tiny Home, Grow Crops, and Help the Locals

I’ve been a fan of Rod Tyson and his PC game Hive Quest for some time now. Although it’s gone through many changes, at its core this adventure exploration game is set in a mythical woodland full of magic and fantasy creatures. In the same vein, the developer is now working on another project, Beyond the Grove (formerly known as Oortle’s Haven).

Play as May as she journeys through the land of Fey with her trusty snail steed. Discover tiny villages with tiny inhabitants that have many mysteries for you to uncover! Learn about May’s past and the secrets behind this hidden forest kingdom.

In Development for Consoles and PC

Beyond the Grove is still in early development for Xbox, PS, and PC, with the possibility of a Switch version. You can help contribute on Rod’s Patreon Page here and his new studio Cotton Drift Studio.

Hive Quest is a whimsical journey through lush, enchanted woodland filled with ancient magic, intriguing puzzles, and more! We thoroughly enjoyed playing the demo, which you can read about here, by sole developer Rod Tyson from Golden Heart Games. You can even try it out for yourself on Indie DB or Gamejolt, and Wishlist the game on Steam here. Below are the details of the current Kickstarter Campaign if you’d like to support Hive Quest, as well as a few more details about the game.

    Kickstarter Campaign

You can help support this indie game through Kickstarter here from now until August 16th, 2019 with some awesome stretch goals to reach for and tons of goodies as rewards. Moreover, extra funding will also help the creator personally so he can continue developing this game as well as giving him the ability to obtain new 3D models for new levels and content, create more artwork, and add more voice acting and music! The Alpha is slated for December 2019, the Beta is April 2019, and Steam Early Access around the Summer of 2020.

    Stretch Goals

    • The four different tribes currently in the game will get a cool make over.
    • A wider variety of plants, trees, mushrooms, insects, birds and animals.
    • Puzzles, more mystery and more lore!
    • Crazy encounters along with more spiffy voice acting.
    • More creature pet choices, to keep the Shrublet company.
    • A bigger world! More themed locations to explore.

    Rewards

    • Digital Wallpaper Pack
    • Digital Art Book
    • Special Edition Magic Portal Poster
    • Beta Tester Access
    • Alpha Tester Access
    • Ancient Secret – Your name and a short message in a secret location
    • Easter Egg – create something cool with the developer himself
    • Special Kickstarter Hive Drone Skin

Hive Quest – Strange Adventures in the Wild Wood Updates

You play as drones that are part of a Hive Mind and establish yourself in your new home. Manage your resources, create new buildings, have creature pets find ingredients and guardians to protect your hive. There’s so much more to explore, magical characters and spells to discover, and puzzles to solve in this rich and enchanting world! We’re talking witches, fairies, woodland sprites and more!

    Lore

The four insect tribes mentioned above even have their own pantheon of gods! Each of which will play a role in the game. There’s definitely ancient magic at work here.

    • Mara : the goddess of peace and harmony. Her servant is Yuna the guide, who you will meet very early on in the demo.
    • Angrith: the god of destruction, too be invoked in times of war.
    • Nexir: the dark god of betrayal also exists, but his motives are shrouded in mystery.

    Subterfuge and Warfare

You can create beacons from pebbles and other stuff lying around with the aid of a Beacon Spell. This will beguile the drones from an enemy hive. Furthermore, you can also use a Zealot as a spy to infiltrate an enemy hive and change its allegiance. When there are enemy hives that need squashing, you can grab a bunch of your drones and point them in their direction. You can also bring to life piles of old sticks to make a Stick Knight that will further defend your hive.

Finally, the developer has fixed many bad bugs since the last demo so you might want to return to the Old Orchard and have another go! You can grow your Hive into a powerful kingdom in Hive Quest although just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful view flying around is also a treat! Follow Rod Tyson on Twitter here to stay updated on Hive Quest’s progress.

We played the demo and have the scoop on all the magic and wonder that is Hive Quest!

Hive Quest is a puzzle and adventure game developed solely by Rod Tyson (Golden Heart Games). It’s an enchanting game filled with faeries, woodland creatures, and a bug friend named Yuna. Yuna is there to help you make a new home and to tell you how to protect your hive. You can check out our previous article about the game here for the basics. Now there’s an updated demo on Indie DB that we have decided to take a shot at. See below to learn about our experience and view our gameplay video.

    Finding a New Hive

You are first greeted by Yuna as he explains that the Power (a mysterious being) has sent him to guide us. Meanwhile, a man in a protective bug outfit comes toward the Hive and sprays a poisonous chemical completely destroying it. Take control of the Queen and fly away with the few survivors to a safer area while following Yuna. Now it is up to you to rebuild and manage your resources for your new Hive. All while surviving the Wild Wood and discovering the secrets of Old Orchard.

Looking for food around the new Hive

    Maintaining Your Resources

You have to keep track of the health meter of the Queen so that she doesn’t starve along with your Hive. You can interact with things within a circle surrounding your Hive but to truly explore the lush environment you will need to take control of your little worker bugs’ minds using Hive Mind. You’ll need to find food, such as maggots from rotten fruit, and Gloop. Gloop is gelatinous blue stuff that comes from fungi or plants that you can use as building materials.

    Creating New Buildings

Receive your first pulp seed from a visitor and create a workshop that will make more pulp seeds. Theses seeds will be used as blueprints for creating more buildings around your Hive. The next building will be a nursery to grow your tribe in numbers by raising baby drones. At first I thought the hanging bugs were the babies but they might just be mobiles. I have a feeling that that’s why I kept getting a message to “Lay Builder Egg”. As of now, you have to wait a certain amount of time, while giving Gloop, for these buildings to be ready. This process felt a little long but perhaps when there are more things to do around Hive it won’t feel as time-consuming.

    Meeting Magical Creatures

This demo has one major task; save a faerie trapped in a bottle by a Witch. Once you have done that, she will reward you with two spells you can use right away. One gives your Hive some more food, the other animates a pile of sticks into your first servant; the Stick Knight. They are made to defend your Hive from enemies.

    My first Stick Knight

Afterward, you meet Pog and Bella from the Snail Rider Clan who have set up a trader camp for you. They also gift you with a magical Sprite Charm which lets you create magical pets. You find your first dormant nature spirit in a tree which comes alive. Then, it begins to build itself a home within your tribe. You can follow it around and see what it is thinking with an image, which is quite adorable. My woodland sprite dug a hole in the dirt and recovered some berries. I’m assuming this pet will be quite the helpful little forager.

    Controls, Graphics, Sound

I played with a mouse to move my camera around and got a little frustrated as it wouldn’t always line up with my pointer. Therefore, it could be difficult to grab objects or interact with them. Moving with WASD was simple enough while controlling a drone. However, I wish that when I let go of the forward button that my bug would come to a complete and immediate stop.

In spite of that, flying around with a drone felt quite peaceful when reaching heights. You can see all of the beautiful scenery from above and really get the feeling that you are in a forest. It was also amusing to hear the buzzing of your wings, the wind rustling the leaves of trees, and birds singing in the distance. This was definitely quite serene and captivating!

Flying around with one of my drones

The cycle of night and day is fine but I found the nighttime to be a little too dark. I had trouble seeing things in the background and where I was going. The only things I can see from afar is a tiny and the slight glow from Gloop. It’s understandable as there are no other sources of light but just a little more lighting would go a long way to enhancing my experience. The shining lights for your “next location pointer” could also be a little brighter as they can become obscured from all of the tall grass in the game. Aside from that, I really appreciated the golden text to the right of my screen which occasionally displayed helpful tips.

We absolutely love the indie gaming world, and some of our favorite titles are coming to Kickstarter very soon!

Games created by independent developers always seem have just a touch more charm than games created by large companies. You can always feel that someone put a lot of love and care into what you are playing. Whether made by one driven and passionate individual, or a collective of like-minded innovators, indie games always have something new and exciting to offer. Creating video games is an amazing way to show the world what makes you special, and share a bit of your heart with all those who would have it.

We at myPotatoGames pride ourselves for having developed a keen eye in finding wonderfully charming and surprisingly unique games. We do our very best to share everything we can about the games we find enthralling. A few of myPotatoGames favorites are soon going to be looking for funding to help their projects become the best that they can. Outside of creating the games themselves, what better way to help something wonderful become even more grand.
