You may have noticed the ability to craft an ocarina as a DIY recipe, or spotted a guitar in Nook’s Cranny. There’s a whole bunch of instruments that can be ‘played’ in the game. Whether you just want to make a bunch of loud noises with friends, or get creative with them, here’s all of the instruments in Animal Crossing: New Horizons & how to get them.

First off, you can ‘play’ an instrument by interacting with it/equipping it using the A button. You may just think that instruments like the ocarina, electric bass guitar, etc, play a load of random notes, which is mostly true.

However, like in New Leaf, if you are in a room that is playing music (or even outdoors in New Horizons), the instrument will play notes/chords that match the particular song you might be playing. This means you can have a multiplayer in-game band! However I still prefer the idea of 8 people just smashing the A button to make a load of loud noises from random instruments, and calling the ‘song’ ‘2020’.

The below list includes all of the instruments that we have discovered so far, and excludes equipment such as the microphone and effects rack. Let us know if we’ve missed any.

    Ocarina

The Ocarina can be crafted once the player has purchased the DIY for Beginners recipe book. It requires 5x clay to craft.

    Wooden Fish

The DIY recipe for the Wooden Fish instrument can be found in bottles that wash up on your beach. You will need 3x wood to craft it.

    Empty Can Kalimba

You can get the DIY recipe for the Empty Can Kalimba in bottles that wash ashore. Another way of obtaining the recipe for it is by reeling in a can whilst fishing. This may inspire your player and unlock the recipe also. You’ll need 1x empty can, 1x wood and 1x iron nugget to craft it.

    Gong

The DIY recipe for the gong can also be found in bottles that wash up on your beach. You will need 6x iron nuggets and 5x wood to craft it.

    Ukelele

The Ukelele is a craftable item that requires 5x hardwood. However, it is not yet clear how you obtain the recipe for it.

    Upright Piano

An Upright Piano can be bought from Nook’s Cranny for 53,000 bells

    Alto Saxophone

The Alto Saxophone costs 3,400 bells and can be bought from Nook’s Cranny

    Violin

You can purchase the Violin from Nook’s Cranny for 140,000 bells

    Electric Guitar (style 1)

This style of Electric Guitar can be bought from Nook’s Cranny for 3,100 bells

    Electric Guitar (Style 2)

You can buy this style of Electric Guitar from Nook’s Cranny for 71,000 bells

    Electric Bass Guitar

The Electric Bass Guitar can be purchased from Nook’s Cranny for 82,000 bells

    Synthesizer

You can purchase the Synthesizer from Nook’s Cranny for 66,000 bells

    Grand Piano

The Grand Piano can be bought from Nook’s Cranny for 260,000 bells

    Cello

This can be purchased from Nook’s Cranny for 130,000 bells

    Harp

You can purchase the Harp from Nook’s Cranny for 130,000 bells

    Virgo Harp

The Virgo Harp is part of the Zodiac Series. It is a craftable item, and requires Virgo Fragments to make. These fragments can be found along with star fragments on the beach the day after meteor showers. However, Virgo fragments can only be found between August 23rd to September 22nd.

    Marimba

The Marimba can be purchased from Nook’s Cranny for 4,300 bells

    Pan Flute

I obtained the DIY recipe for this from inside a bottle that washed up on one of my beaches. The recipe requires 7x young spring bamboo, so if you don’t have bamboo already, then you should go on a mystery tour where you may find an island with bamboo.

    Tambourine

This can be purchased from Nook’s Cranny for 1,500 bells

Check out this awesome YouTube video where a guy uses in-game instruments and garageband to create a song.

First introduced in Animal Crossing for the Gamecube, K.K. Slider is an iconic special NPC appearing in all the mainline games since then. The good news is that New Horizons is no exception. However, it will take a little time and effort before you can meet him. Here is how to get K.K. Slider to visit in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

    Inititating Project K

Your first steps will be assisting Tom Nook with various tasks such as preparing for new residents, and upgrading the Residents Services tent into a building. Upon completing the Residents Services building you should go inside and speak to Tom Nook. He will confess to being a huge K.K. Slider fan, and would love for him to perform a concert on the island.

How To get A 3 Star Island Rating

However, you will need a 3 star rating for your island in order for it to be deemed good enough for K.K. Slider to visit. You can speak to Isabelle in order to find out your island’s rating, and get tips on how to improve it.

Increasing your island’s population should be your first priority. You will need at least 7 residents on your island to achieve a 3 star rating.

This can be done by building a campsite, and inviting any of its visitors to move to your island. You can also invite characters to your campsite by using Animal Crossing amiibo cards at the Nook Stop terminal. The amiibo card feature will be unlocked once you have visited Harv’s island.

Another method is to use Nook Miles Tickets to visit deserted islands. You may encounter characters there who can also be invited to your island.

Additionally, upon completing the Residents Services building, and inviting the first character that visits your campsite to move to your island, you’ll be able to sell plots of land for villagers to move into. Simply speak with Tom Nook inside Residents Services and for 10,000 Bells, you can pick a plot of land for a character to move into. This will encourage more characters to visit your campground and deserted islands.

Next, you will need to get rid of a load of weeds, and plant flowers and trees. You should also place fences and outdoor furniture, and speak to Tom Nook to build bridges and inclines.

As long as you keep checking in with Isabelle and follow her advice, she will eventually tell you that your island has a 3 star rating. Tom Nook will interrupt the conversation and inform you both that he is going to invite K.K. Slider to perform on the island immediately.

    The Concert & Unlocking Terraforming

The next day, K.K. Slider will arrive on your island and perform ‘Welcome Horizons’. the game’s theme tune. After his performance, you will receive a copy of the song in your inventory. You will also then be given the Island Designer app on your NookPhone after speaking with Tom Nook. This will allow you to start terraforming.

    Saturday Night Visits

After his initial concert, K.K. Slider will then visit every Saturday (some nice continuity), where you can find him in the plaza. At 6pm, he’ll start taking song requests from you. And just like in previous games, if you input one of his songs correctly, he’ll perform it for you. You will then receive a copy of that song. Alternatively, you can ask him to choose and he will simply play a song at random.
