[dropcap]H[/dropcap]arvest Moon is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary this year. For the 20th anniversary, Natsume is doing two things: They are bringing the series to PC for the first time and bringing the series to consoles which has not been done in a few years. The new Harvest Moon game is known as Light of Hope.

Light of Hope’s graphics are top down and players view the cast of Light of Hope with more realistic proportions. Light of Hope does away with the full 3-D perspective which harken back to its most recent predecessors, which were the first Harvest Moon games developed by Natsume after their split with Marvelous Entertainment (It begs repeating: The series known in the West as Harvest Moon now is different from Bokujo Monogatari, the original farming sim franchise that now goes by Story of Seasons stateside).

Producer Taka Maekawa informed Polygon that this 2.5D style is meant to evoke the very first Harvest Moon game. Although the 16-bit Super Nintendo sprites have been replaced with 3D-rendered models, the flat perspective and grid-based, limited range of motion are all straight from Harvest Moon on SNES.

This art style might remind people of the popular farming sim Stardew Valley. However, Natsume is adamant that Light of Hope is not taking anything from Stardew Valley but rather they are going in their own direction. The switch version will have full touch controls and the pc version can be played with just a mouse.

The game is expected to launch in early 2018.

[dropcap]J[/dropcap]une is approaching fast and with that come E3 and the games we’ll be playing all Summer. Like last month, we’re going to outline just a small sample of the upcoming June games. It may be too soon to try and guarantee the quality of anything on this list. However, we’d like to keep a close eye on these titles and suggest that our readers do the same.

This article was written before E3, just to be clear. We update weekly with any games coming to notable systems and E3 is likely to surprise us with something. Therefore, it would be smart to keep an eye on our page, as well, for any updates. Also, we focus a lot on Nintendo systems. While we might include games from other systems, we tend to look for games fitting under a more casual banner.

With that out of the way, let’s begin!

    June Games for Nintendo Switch

GoNNER – Remember all that frustrating roguelike action we got last month? Were you aching for more? You’re in luck! GoNNER, an indie rage shooter developed by Art in Heart and published by Raw Fury (a fitting name), is making its way to the Switch, this month. Back in October, it already found its way onto other consoles and Steam, but now you can play it on the go. This game’s chalkboard aesthetic, procedural generation, and addictively difficult gameplay will keep you going for a while. (Launches 6/8/17; $9.99)

Cars 3: Driven to Win – With a new Pixar movie comes another video game adaptation of the film. This one appears to focus primarily on the racing, centering the story around your opponents in each race. With a racing mode and battle mode available, it may be just the thing you need to come down from that Mario Kart high that overshadowed the last month. (Launches 6/13/17; $59.99 Get it here Switch/WII U, PS4/PS3, Xbox One/360)

ARMS – It’s finally here! If you’ve been following us, you know how excited we are for Nintendo’s next big title. Arms appears to have all the depth and fun it needs to survive the Summer, but we already wrote plenty on that. Instead, tune into the Global Testpunch and give the game a try for yourself. (Launches 6/16/17; $59.99 Get it here )

Cave Story+ – There’s not a lot to say, here. Cave Story is an old indie Metroidvania title that showed us all how indie is done. If you knew about it before, this is the same game you already know. This game is accessible to most players, and it has an easy-to-follow story and adorable pixel art graphics. The soundtrack is a classic that will surely be stuck in your head if it isn’t already. (Launches 6/20/17; $29.99 Get it here )

(RiME, which we covered last month, and Shakedown Hawaii are slated for Q2 and Spring, respectively. By process of elimination, they should release this month, but that’s far from a guarantee. If we get word that they are releasing this month, then we will update this page with info regarding them.)

    June Games for Nintendo 3DS

Of Mice and Sand – Did you miss out on Fallout Shelter? The game where you raise post-apocalyptic survivors in an underground base and do your best to keep things from falling apart? Developer Arc System Works and publisher Circle Entertainment has the solution for you. This title will let you take control of a large vehicle in the desert and populate it with mice that will help you build your dream tank. Then you can manage the mice living there to maintain the vehicle, cross the desert, and take on quests for resources. (Launches 6/1/17; $7.99)

Farming Simulator 18 – This farming sim developed by Giant Software is probably the perfect game to soak up a lot of time. If you’re waiting for a certain game to come out or want to buy something that’ll last you a long time this is probably a reasonable place to start. Run a farm, plant your crops, breed and raise animals. You’re in charge and no one can say otherwise. (Launches 6/6/17; $29.99 Get it here – ON SALE )

Ever Oasis – This is another one of those games that will likely define the month. Just as well that it comes closer to the end, then. Ever Oasis puts you in charge of a budding oasis, one of the last bastions of life in a seemingly endless desert. With the help of a water spirit and any adventurers you can bring with you, you’ll go exploring and taking on quests out in the desert sands. (Launches 6/23/17; $39.99 Get it here )

RPG Maker Fes – Creative tools! Creative tools from every angle! This 3DS version of the computer program will allow you to create and share RPG games on the Nintendo 3DS. There will be another app available for those that just want to play games made with this program, but we’ll likely hear more about that at E3. (Launces 6/27/17; Price $39.99 Get it here )

    Other

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy – 3D platforming fanatics rejoice! Crash is back! This title is a solid remaster of the three main series Crash Bandicoot games and it’s coming to PS4. If you missed out on it back in the PS1 era, or you just want to play it again for old time’s sake, this title is for you. (Launches for PS4 6/30/17; $39.99 Get it here)

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]ith more than 120 million copies sold, Minecraft is one of the most popular games ever released. Now, the game has finally made it to Nintendo Switch. Minecraft Switch Edition is available beginning May, 11th, and features all of the rich gameplay one comes to expect from a game in the series. Minecraft Switch Edition is the first true portable version of the game that features full controller support. While the game has been available on mobile devices for some time now, Minecraft on the Switch is truly unique in the sense that it is as much of a hybrid as the Switch console itself.

Minecraft has always stood out to me as an inspiring game of creativity, due to its inventive gameplay but also the aesthetics. Even though the visuals have had a dated look and feel to it for some time now, few games have visuals so recognizable and charming. The simplicity of the graphics make the game easily customizable, hence the many skin packs the game comes with. Furthermore, the game looks beautiful on the crisp screen of the Nintendo Switch in handheld mode. It feels like you are holding the huge world in your hands, which is something I always enjoyed about games on handheld devices such as the Nintendo 3DS or Nintendo Switch.

    Minecraft Switch Edition

Getting Started with Minecraft Switch Edition

First time you start the game you will be prompted with the main menu, at this point we couldn’t contain our excitement, so we choose a character Skin ( Mario ), and created our first world right away. Within the options of your server, you have the ability to choose if you want to create an online or offline game. If you do opt to go online, up to 7 other friends will be able to join, and mine with you. You can however restrict the people who can join your game. For example you can allow only friends, or friends of friends.

    Minecraft Switch Edition

Once you have selected your desired server settings you will be able change the gameplay options. The game modes you can choose are Survival, Creative and Adventure. These are three modes known from previous versions of the game. And each one of them changes the gameplay just a little bit. You may also change the difficulty from easy to medium and hard.

    Crafting

Creating, building and crafting are a few of the most important actions you will perform in the game. While the beginning can be a bit overwhelming, the tutorial explains the basics of these three core actions. Even though new players may get lost mining all sorts of different materials, from trees to sand, not knowing what to do with either of it. The Crafting user interface luckily is pretty straight forward. You can even use touchscreen controls to navigate through the menus, making it even easier to perform your tasks. As pretty and sleek as the user interface is, you will still want to have your Minecraft Wikis at your fingertips for crafting recipes, tips and tricks.

    Minecraft Switch Edition

Once you do decide to start crafting, you might feel a little frustrated at the beginning. There is no way to know what materials you need to create a torch, a pickaxe or anything else your heart desires. You will be forced to rely on Minecraft wiki pages to know what is needed for the item you want to make.

There is definitely a learning curve to all of this, if you are a first time player to Minecraft, the huge world and options can make you feel lost at times. But Minecraft is fun enough to warrant the learning curve. Once you overcome the first hurdle, the addiction kicks in once you crafted and created your first items. By this time you will proabbly have noticed, that the sun has been setting for a while, and scary noises will appear all around you. Thats right the day and night cycle is still part of the gameplay, and different creatures will appear during the night.

    Minecraft Switch Edition

This is where the game will really pull you into the world. You will either have to find shelter, craft or find a sword. Even a wooden stick will help you make you feel more secure. This is also where I began worrying, as I was running around holding a bag of seeds, feeling beyond helpless if anything scary should cross my path. I started looking around, trying to get a hold of materials I could use to make some simple tools. A shelter, some weapons or even a simple stick. Like a cavemen stocking their first fire, building basic tools, torches and a shelter – all of these things will make you feel a lot safer in Minecraft, especially during the night. And once you survived the first night, you will feel a sense of accomplishment. As the sun rises, and shines some light on your newly created survival kit, you can’t help but somehow feel proud of what you have built.

    Create and Build

Beyond creating a sense and feel of safety, you will also be building the land of your dreams. As you mine more, you will establish a good amount of materials in your inventory. Once you mastered crafting your basic survival kit ( tools and torches ) you will expand your repertoire to include superfluous pieces. In order to build your first tiny shed, house or mansion, depending on how big your ambitions are, you will need to craft ladders, stairs, doors, windows and more. This is where the expansive crafting systems turns from a necessity to survive, into something you frequently do, simply out of joy to complete your next big project. There is always something to do in Minecraft.

    Minecraft Switch Edition

Once I finished my first house on the top of a mountain, I looked out of my ( personally crafted ) window, and noticed there is a higher mountain in the far distance. Off I went to go exploring and climbing that new taller mountain I saw from my window. Once I completed my journey, I started building a new project, just on the tip of the mountain. The feeling of freedom and exploration, the ability to alter and change your world to your very own desire, is to date a very unique experience only found in Minecraft.

The crafting system in this game is as powerful or as simple as you want it to be. You can stick to crafting torches and weapons, or make it more complex and start building houses, or even a self-powered rail system, that will connect the entire world. There is no limit besides your creativity, and building an underground railroad system, is one of the best experience you can have, especially when done so in multiplayer with friends.

    Adventure Alone or with Friends

The feeling and the thrill of exploration, with unforeseen events is impeccable. The Minecraft Switch Edition captures this just as well, as any previous Minecraft version on the market. There were times I spend my day farming, maintaining my house, hunting for food and just sitting back and relax. But other times, you will find yourself stumbling upon a gigantic mine, a mysterious cave, or an area of the world you haven’t yet explored. These are the kind of moments that invite you to an unexpected adventure. Because worlds are randomly generated, you never know what secrets you may uncover next.

    Minecraft Switch Edition

Of course adventuring is always better with friends, in my opinion at least. Minecraft on the Switch offers multiplayer for up to 8 people. You can play with your friends, or the friends of your friends, the choice is yours when you create and open your world to others. The multiplayer is supported through local as well as Online network. If you have the option to play with others, we highly encourage you to do so. Building that underground rail road system, or the beautiful mansion by the beach is twice as much fun, when done in a collaborative manner. As you build your empire, friends can drop in and out at any given time, and it is great fun to stun your friends with what you have built after they been away for a while.

    Final Thought

Minecraft Switch Edition is a wonderful game, that adds to making the game lineup for the Nintendo Switch even stronger. There is little new for a longtime Minecraft player to be discovered. But to be able to take the game on the go, with full controller support, and online multiplayer, makes this one of the best Minecraft iterations of the series so far. The graphics, though beginning to look somewhat outdated, look still stunning on the crisp display of the Switch. The huge world size, and the different skin packs make the game very replayable. Minecraft performs and plays beautifully on Nintendos Hybrid console. The team behind Minecraft has managed to make this is the perfect game to play with your friends, and is a must own game for every Switch owner who enjoys sandbox games – regardless if you have already played Minecraft before or not.

Big thanks to Microsoft for providing the review copy of the game.

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]taxel was developed by Indie Studio Plukit. Staxel is a sandbox farming game. In this game you can tend to crops, raise cute animals, and build a village. The game is currently in development as the developer will be adding more features in the months to come. This preview was played exclusively in single mode, however you can also team up with your friends in the multiplayer part of the game.

    Staxel Character Creation

    Staxel Character

Before you begin the game, you must create your character. You choose the gender, race (human or elf currently), and personality on the first step. The next step is to choose the hair style. From the screenshot above, you can see that I chose the steampunk top hat. The customization of the head piece is neat and gives you other options such as a Jack’O’Lantern, a wolf, and Egyptian themed hair and more. The next step is to choose the face of your character. The face determines the shape and the eyes. This is also the step where you change your eye color as well. The last step consists of you choosing the color of the top, pants, and shoes. You do not currently have a huge selection in clothing styles but this might be added upon later in development.

    Staxel Gameplay

    Staxel

After you create your character, you begin the tutorial. The tutorial starts off in your home. It is recommended that you first go to your bed so that your “home” is saved (you will see why this is important later). The first character you meet is Farm Fan. She helps guide you through the tutorial and the basic mechanics of the game. She asks if you are a dog or cat person which determines what pet you will receive. The look of the animal is randomly generated. For the first time I played, I had a Dalmatian and the second time I had a Beagle looking dog, so cute!

    Staxel Beach

The next part of the tutorial is to explore town and the various buildings. The first building you explore is the tavern. Then the tutorial recommends you go visit the various Merchants in the town square. The town square is also where festivals are held (similiar to Animal Crossing). The first merchant you will be visiting is Morgan as she sells seeds. The Supermarket also sells seeds as well as a variety of goods. In a later tutorial quest, you will be visiting the supermarket so that you can buy a pet bowl and pet food. One feature that I find is nice is that no matter what you select it will tell you the cost in petals (currency of the game) as well as what the object is. You get a decent amount of money fulfilling tutorial quests so it’s recommended you do them.

In the top left of the screen, you can see where there is an indicator that lists the date (Season, number) as well as what time of day it is. There are two cycles to the typical Staxel day: Day and Night. However, what I find is neat about Staxel days is that the Day and Night cycles are split into smaller proportions. This gives you a better indicator of the time passing and how close you are to nighttime. A typical Staxel day is about ten minutes.

The controls for Staxel are fluid using keyboard and mouse as well as a game controller (I used an Xbox One controller). The controls are listed clearly in the controls menu and there is no lag when switching between various items. I noticed that occasionally the game camera would move upwards when speaking with a villager but it was a minor annoyance. A neat feature that the developers added in was that by holding the default action button, you can increase the till size. For example, instead of tilling a field square by square, you can do a 3 x 5 field instead. It helps save time when wanting to plant a lot of crops.

    Exploration

    Staxel

I took the liberty of exploring the world of Staxel instead of doing the quests. I found that Staxel is quite rich in pixellated detail but it was the vivid colors that really made it pop. It wasn’t before long that I found myself standing on a beach.

    Staxel Beach

It is not clear yet whether standing on the water is intentional. Like other farming games, Staxel has weather as well. As you can see from the above screenshot, it is currently raining. Rain is neat since you don’t have to water your crops and you can devote yourself to exploring instead.

If you have played any open sandbox game, then you will know the importance of being able to fast travel back to your home base. As long as you get inside your bed, you will be able to “return to home” in the menu, no matter how far away you are. I went quite far into the ocean and instantly appeared back into my house.

Different playthroughs will not give you different areas to explore. This is subject to change as the Developers could add in a feature where the world you create is randomly generated each and every time.

    Conclusion

Staxel is a neat mash up of Minecraft, Stardew Valley, and Animal Crossing. The developers have started off with a good platform to build off of. This game requires a lot of time but not a lot of effort. If you are looking for a game where you can have a lot of control and relax while doing it, Staxel would be the perfect fit.

For some Staxel Gameplay Footage, check out our article here. A special thank you to the developer for providing us with a copy to preview.
