[dropcap]Z[/dropcap]elda: Breath of the Wild will soon receive it’s first DLC. The expansion pass will  bring two major updates. The first one being released this summer, while the second pack is going to be released this holiday season. Nintendo has just announced some new details about the Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion pass. The first part of the expansion pass will include the new Trial of the Sword, in which you can encounter enemies in 45 different rooms. If you complete this, the Master Sword will remain in it’s glowing form forever.

You can read the details about the Master Trials DLC below. If you didn’t buy the pass yet, you can do so here.

    • Trial of the Sword: By accessing this location, players can challenge the new Trial of the Sword (previously known as “Cave of Trials Challenge”), where enemies appear one after another. Link starts without any armor or weapons, and if he defeats all of the enemies in the room he can proceed to the next area. Trial of the Sword will include around 45 total rooms for players to complete. When Link clears all of the trials, the true power of the Master Sword will awaken and always be in its glowing powered-up state.
    • Hard Mode: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is already considered one of the most thrilling games in The Legend of Zelda series, and fans looking for a challenge are in for a treat with the new Hard Mode. In Hard Mode, the “ranks” of enemies in the game are increased (i.e. Red Bokoblins change to Blue), and players might even encounter higher-ranking enemies they wouldn’t find through normal play. Enemies will also slowly recover health in battle, forcing you to defeat them more quickly. They will also more easily spot Link as he approaches them, making these enemies tougher to sneak up on. In addition, floating planks held aloft by balloons will be scattered around Hyrule. By successfully reaching these planks, players can battle enemies and collect treasure.
    • Hero’s Path Mode: Exploring Hyrule is exciting, but with such a large world it’s sometimes hard for players to remember where they’ve been. To help with tracking progress, the new Hero’s Path Mode will document every step players take, and mark their path in green on the map. The route taken will be tracked for the player’s last 200 hours of play time, with an included slider to track footsteps on a timeline. This even works retroactively, so players that have already put many hours into the game will be able to see where they have traveled. This feature will help in identifying the locations they haven’t visited in this vast world, and may help players find those Shrines they haven’t encountered yet.
    • Travel Medallion: There will be a new treasure chest somewhere in the game world which contains the Travel Medallion. With the Travel Medallion, players can create a temporary new travel point on the map where they are currently standing. Link can then transport himself to that point at any time. Only one travel point can be registered on the map at a time.
    • Korok Mask: By finding the new Korok Mask, players will have a much easier time finding Korok locations in the game. When equipped, the mask will shake, indicating that a Korok is hidden somewhere nearby.
    • New Equipment: Eight new pieces of equipment inspired by previous characters and games in the series will be added to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild after downloading the first DLC pack. Once discovered by the player, they will yield equipment themed after fan-favorite games and characters such as Midna, Tingle, Phantom and Majora’s Mask.

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]e are taking an in-depth look at what appears to be the most mind bending and most beautiful puzzle game released on Nintendo Switch so far. Snake Pass is set in a 3D world that only on the Nintendo Switch you can take on the go, and play whenever, and wherever you want.

    Let’s Start Slithering

Slither, Curl, Climb – rinse and repeat!

Snake Pass is a beautifully designed level based puzzle game. You slither, curl, climb and sometimes you will fall – but the goal is to make your way through the stunningly beautiful crafted levels. You will pick up all sorts of collectables along the way to master each of the 15 levels. The first time you start up the game you will be greeted by a cheerful, quirky little humming bird. This bird will be there when help is needed, not only will it lead the way, but it can also provide a lift. Pressing Y on the joy-con controller will call the humming bird to lift your tail. This is especially helpful when you are about to slip, or loose grip. The bird never leaves sight, and makes the entire experience a little less lonely and more cheerful as you slither through the levels.

Oh boy, does it look pretty!

One of the most gorgeous, and best looking game on the Nintendo Switch to date.

One thing you will notice right at the start, is the gorgeous look of the game. The 3D world truly comes to life on the crisp and vibrant screen of the Nintendo Switch. If you climb high enough you can get a good look of the entire level, spotting the collectables and planning where to go next. Trees, grass, water and everything else is beautifully animated. You will find butterflies flying around, waterfalls dripping down, and trees swinging with the wind. It’s an absolute pleasure to explore each of the levels, and the harmony and lovely attention to detail invites the player to explore the levels even more.

    Exploration

Go up high or down low. Caves and hidden spots are waiting to be explored.

Talking about exploration in Snake Pass. You may chose to run through the levels, as the main goal is to find the lost keystones to open the gate in order to advance to the next level. But if you wish – you can take the experience a lot farther than that. Every level has hidden caves, secret spots and more to explore. The exploration is usually being awarded by finding gold coins and more. Each level has 3 keystones, 5 gold coins, and 20 blue bubbles to collect. While the keystones are necessary to advance, the other 2 kinds are optional. Finding the gold coins becomes especially more challenging as you advance. Locating the coins may take you some time, but reaching them can be an even more challenging experience.

    Refreshingly Challenging

The Game reinvents itself as you advance.

Most games become more difficult as you advance. This is also the case in Snake Pass, each level brings new challenges. You will have to climb higher to reach coins that become more and more difficult to get to. But beyond just making things harder, Snake Pass succeeds in finding new ways to challenge the player with each new worlds to explore. Not only is it becoming more difficult making the game more fun, but it also adds new mechanics to keep players entertained. For example underwater exploration, or pulling switches and levers all add to keeping the gameplay fresh and preventing it from becoming scale. It almost feels like as if the game reinvents itself with every new world you enter. This is especially necessary to prevent the game from becoming stale and repetitive. Snake pass never felt like you had to do the same task over and over again, but instead challenged us to discover new ways to master each and every level.

    snake pass underwater

Even though Snake Pass is a rather short game, given that it only costs $19.99 on the Nintendo Switch eShop – it provides hours of entertainment. And while the main game can be finished in a matter of hours, we believe the replay-ability of the game is high. We found ourselves returning to the same level multiple times in order co collect everything. Exploring little caves and hidden areas make it a lot of fun to revisit a level and slither around to discover every square inch.

    Final thought

    Play again, and again…

Snake Pass is a refreshing puzzle game. Sumo Digital has successful made use of a retro inspired gameplay, and put a modern and fun twist on it. The game looks absolutely stunning in handheld as well as in TV mode. The animations are pretty, and the level design is carefully crafted with a lot of attention to detail. The 15 Levels within 4 different world settings are amusing, but the game feels short lived. Especially when you don’t go out of your way to collect every coin, it feels the game can be completed within a matter of hours. We were left wanting a few more levels, perhaps Sumo Digital can release a DLC pack with more levels if the demand is there.

Snake Pass is currently available on Nintendo Switch, Steam, Playstation4 and Xbox One

Thanks to Sumo Digital for kindly providing the review copy of Snake Pass. Review based on the Nintendo Switch Version of the game.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Nintendo Switch list of games is growing daily. Even though the console remains to be sold out at major retailers. If you are in the market to buy a Nintendo Switch some stores like Amazon, Toys “R” Us and Gamestop are promising new stock to arrive very soon. Adventure Game Rime will be released for the hybrid console this summer. The entertainment magazine EDGE has recently featured the game, and also rated some other Nintendo Switch games as seen below. Some games like Snipperclips scored very well, others like Super Bomberman and 1-2-Switch fell short of the expectations.

    1-2-Switch – 6
Snipperclips: Cut it Out, Together – 8
    Super Bomberman – 4

Snipperclips: Cut it Out together has received an 8/10 rating. A score that we fully agree with. We have mentioned before that Snipperclips is one of the most fun multiplayer games currently available for the Nintendo Switch. If you haven’t already you can buy the game from the Nintendo eShop for only $19.99.

RiME on the other hand is a single-player puzzle adventure game about discovery, experienced through the eyes of a young boy who awakens on a mysterious island after shipwrecking off its coast. Players must navigate the island’s secrets by making use of light, sound, perspective and even time. Inspired by the rugged, sunbaked terrain of the Mediterranean coast, RiME paints its breathtaking world with a fusion of vibrant colors and moving musical undertones to set the stage for the deeply personal journey that awaits within.

    Post Image

We recently had a chance to sit down and speak with Rebecca one of the two creators behind Ooblets. Rebecca is handling the programming and art development on her own.  Even though she is handling a 2 person full time job, she was kind enough to take some time and answer some questions, that fans of the game are burning to know.

When we asked about the possibility to play with friends, Rebecca stated that there are currently no plans to add a 2 player co-op mode to the game, however, she would love to add a multiplayer mode to a possible Ooblets sequel in the future. Furthermore, she also went into greater detail about the main activities in the game, and what she is most excited about  “is the player’s house upgrades, decoration, and item placement“. Player housing is always an exciting addition to any game, being able to create your home, and have a place to return to at the end of the day is something many players enjoy.

Rebecca also defined the core gameplay of Ooblets a little more. As she explains “The main activities are farming, exploring, battling, running a shop, and customizing stuff like your character, your Ooblets, your house, your shop, etc.” We were especially excited to hear about the possibility to run your own shop in Ooblets, and we can’t wait to hear more details about the shopkeeping feature in the game.

She also pointed out that given this project is based on the power of two people it may be unrealistic to expect Sims-like customization levels in regards to housing. Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley and other similar games do offer housing customization to some extend as well. As Ooblets has so many different activities to offer, players will be busy enough exploring all the other options, without having to worry about the depth of building level in the game.

Ooblets is packed with tons of features, and a level of cuteness not seen before. You can read the full interview with the lead programmer and lead artist on Ooblets below.

myPotatoGames: Are you considering to add a Multiplayer mode to Ooblets?
Rebecca: I think Ooblets co-op would be amazing, but with a two person team and the entirety of the game programming falling on my shoulders, it’s not feasible to include it and still get the game out in 2018. We’re hoping to maybe include multiplayer in a sequel if there’s enough interest.

myPotatoGames: Are there plans to have custom content?
Rebecca: There are no plans for that but it’s not completely out of the question. We do run the risk of spreading the game too thin with too much customization.

myPotatoGames: Do you see Ooblets hitting more platforms than just PC and Xbox One? Perhaps the Switch?
Rebecca: We don’t know what the future will hold!

myPotatoGames: Is “Badgetown” customizable in any way? Can you decorate it or place buildings?
Rebecca: You’ll hopefully be able to rent at least one building in Badgetown, but I don’t know about placing buildings or decorating. We’ve had a lot of plans for more town customization but they’re honestly likely not going to make it in given all the other big systems we still have left to implement. That’s another of those things that if there’s enough interest after release, it might be good to include in a sequel.

myPotatoGames: Will Ooblets feature a social system similar to Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley where you can get married to an NPC?
Rebecca: While we do get a lot of requests for this, we’re not currently planning it. There may be some sort of personal relationship mechanic for how friendly you are with various NPCs, but we’re probably going to avoid romantic relationships altogether.

myPotatoGames: Do you work alone on the game?
Rebecca: The team is me and @perplamps who is the game designer, community manager, and general businessy person. I do the art and code. We’ve had a few small things done by freelancers and we’re hoping to get more freelanced work added as we go along. In terms of non-development help, we’re super thankful to all the support and encouragement we get from our publisher Double Fine, our Patreon backers, and all the people who enjoy (and especially those who share) our content on Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook.

myPotatoGames: What is your favorite activity in Ooblets as of right now?
Rebecca: The thing I’m currently most excited about is the player’s house upgrades, decoration, and item placement. I’m a little bit afraid that people are thinking Ooblets has Sims-level customization which it totally won’t have, but you will be able to buy and collect furniture and items to put around your house and farm.

myPotatoGames: What main activties can a player expect in the game?
Rebecca: The main activities are farming, exploring, battling, running a shop, and customizing stuff like your character, your ooblets, your house, your shop, etc. Some of this stuff will obviously be a lot lighter than it’d be in a AAA game but we’re hoping that there will be dozens of hours worth of content and gameplay.

myPotatoGames: Are there seasons and/or weather in the game?
Rebecca: There’s some weather (well, rain) already implemented, but we’re not currently planning on seasons. Instead, there will be different biomes and weather depending on the region you’re exploring. One region might be snow and ice based while another would be a desert, and the crops you can collect there might require special care to grow back on your farm (like special greenhouses, soil, and planters).

myPotatoGames: What inspired you to start this project?
Rebecca: Our inspirations are pretty close to the surface!

Thank you so much Rebecca for answering our questions, and letting us be a part of the development progress of Ooblets. If you want to support the Ooblets team you can do so by joining the Patreon here. You can join Rebecca on Twitter here. Ooblets is currently set to release on PC and Xbox One. Check back for more information on Ooblets in the very near future. In the meantime you can enjoy the announcement trailer below.
