Animal Crossing New Horizons is the next mainline game in the beloved franchise. During a recent interview with IGN, New Horizon’s director Aya Kyogoku and producer Hisashi Nogami revealed some new details on how Tom Nooks role changed a little bit in the upcoming game.

While in previous games the money hungry raccoon was only after our bells, this time around he apparently re-invests the money right back into the community. In new Horizons Nook offers a getaway package for 49,800 Bells that gets you to a deterred island and lets you place a tent wherever you want.

However, Tom Nook doesn’t charge that much to further fill his pockets as Aya says, he works “tirelessly” around the clock to ensure residents are enjoying their island life experience.

[su_quote style=”default” cite=”” url=”” class=””]”He has this place called Resident Services. He tirelessly works 24 hours making sure that all the residents on the island are happy and are living a good life…Whenever Tom receives those debts paid back from the residents and the players, I think that because these resident services upgrade as time goes on, I think he’s investing that money toward the Resident Service for the residents.”[/su_quote]

But rest assured, even though you are only getting a tent in the beginning, much like other games in the series, in Animal Crossing New Horizons you will be upgrading your tent to a proper home in no time. You will also be able to decorate your house and outside surroundings for the first time in any mainline Animal Crossing game.

The French website Gamekult also held an interview with Higashi Nogami where the cloud save ability of Animal Crossing New Horizons has been discussed, according to Nogami “New Horizons will not be compatible with cloud backups to avoid manipulating time, which remains one of the founding concepts of the series”, a basic Nintendo Online subscription is however required to be able to play online with friends all over the world. This statement further ties in with our previous report of Resetti’s absence and the possible lack of time travel.

I’ve always liked Tom Nook. Sure, others joke (or are kind of serious) that he’s the personification of capitalism and possibly outright evil, to boot, but I always thought he was a nice guy. Though honestly the way he ratchets up the price of your additions seemed a bit greedy in New Leaf. Charting over half a million for slight size upgrades when the first ones cost a quarter that…yikes. Still, I’ve always liked him 🙂 He sounds a little more altruistic in this one, if he puts a lot of the money he takes from you into resident services. Sounds like he’ll be open 24 hours a day. Which is good for the players but you’d think his health would suffer, lol.
