I truly don’t know where the year went. It’s been an interesting year, and it’s certainly been full of a ton of top-tier games. We’ve seen the release of Palia, a lovely cozy MMORPG that lets you gather friends and strangers alike to farm, mine, and more. The Moonlight Peaks demo dropped recently, too! Then there’s Spells & Secrets, a great roguelite wizarding adventure. dotAGE is the perfect survival city builder. And Roots of Pacha takes top spot for my favorite farming game this year. Some other notable games are Spirit City: Lofi Sessions and Smushi Come Home. But what’s in store for next year? Well, time will tell, but here are nine games to look forward to in 2024!

    Little Kitty, Big City

First on the list is Little Kitty, Big City! You play as a kitty who’s lost in a big city. You can hurry on your way and find home, or you can take time to explore this brand new place. Cause a little chaos as you explore, too.Dive into trash cans, knock potted plants off their ledges, and walk through some fresh paint to leave behind your paw prints. Meet stray animals on the streets and become friends with them. Find different adorable hats to wear. Plus, so much more!

    Coming to Steam and Switch!

    Bloomtown

Next up is Bloomtown: A Different Story. You play as Emily and her younger brother Chester as they spend their summer holiday in their grandpa’s cozy and quiet town. Underneath this sleepy little town, however, a demon world is growing and children are going missing. Embark on a grand adventure to save the towns from this mysterious demon world. The demons are the fears and vices of the townspeople that have come to life. As Emily, figure out the mysteries and the disappearances and save the souls of everyone! Face off against giant demons and dungeon bosses in the Underside using a turn-based combat system. Fight alongside your friends, who each have their own sets of abilities, as well as summon your own inner demons. Even capture new creatures to use in other battles by weakening them during combat.

    Coming to Steam and PlayStation!

    Chilltown

Third on the list is Chill Town! This game promises to be a soothing blend of idle game and life sim. You run around collecting resources on a beautiful island. Catch bugs, visit the shops or town hall, fish, farm, and tame cute creatures. Unleash your creativity in build mode and create your perfect home using a variety of different decor items. Even add your personal touch to the outside of your home with benches, light posts, and more. Plus, take care of your very own furry friend!

    Coming to Steam!

    Horticular

Horticular is a relaxing garden-builder with a little magical twist. You’ve been summoned by mysterious gnomes to restore an abandoned garden. Critter Cove

Next on the list is Critter Cove, an open-world life sim set in a post-apocalyptic world. You’ll restore an old town, and sail across a gorgeous archipelago. Tavern Talk

Sixth on the list is Tavern Talk, where you find yourself to be the owner of Wayfarer’s Inn. It appears to be a normal inn in the middle of the world, but looks can be deceiving. And you can infuse beverages with magic that can influence someone’s fate. You’re known for helping the people of the realm via these magical drinks. Listen to the stories of the unique cast of beautifully designed adventurers that come in. What sets this game apart from the other farm sim games is that it seeks to combine modernism with the old.

If you’re unfamiliar with Moonlight Peaks, it’s an up and coming farming sim where you play the role of a vampire. You’ll practice making potions and casting spells, tend to some weird supernatural crops, raise adorable livestock, and more. And now there’s a demo!

I played the Moonlight Peaks demo, and I’ll be honest, I’m disappointed. It’s too short and doesn’t let me play enough! The demo is effectively a decoration sim where you get to try out some farming, fly around as a bat, and cast some spells. It’s a delightful little taste of what’s to come, and I’m even more impatient to try the full game. The art is beautifully done. The creatures are supernatural looking, but cute. Crops are different and fun.

The best thing about the Moonlight Peaks demo are the controls. The demo states upon loading that it’s best to use a controller, and it’s easy to see why. Movement is smooth. Switching between tools is easy, and decorating is so simple! Click a button and you enter the decoration menu, then you can pull items from your inventory to place all over the farm.

    Release Date

There’s currently no release date listed for this game. You can grab the demo and add it to your Steam Wishlist, though!

Looking for more magical or subversive farm sims? Try Fae Farm and Graveyard Keeper!

Fae Farm is a beautiful farming sim where you cultivate crops, craft items to decorate your home with or sell, and care for adorable farm animals. Befriend a varying cast of townspeople, and even romance some of them. Plus, you even get to venture into the faerie realm, where you’ll see faeries and fantastical creatures not seen in the human realm. Even delve deep into the mines to collect resources, fight enemies, and uncover mysteries!

    What’s Great About the Game

The art in Fae Farm is absolutely gorgeous. It’s easy to fall in love with the game based on that alone. The scenery is varied. The NPCs all look different. Even your clothing options are lovely. Then, the furniture and decorating choices are great. You’re sure to find something that suits your style, whatever it may be. Adventuring into the fae realm is probably my favorite part. It’s so whimsical and magical. Even the dungeon is dreamy, though chock full of enemies. The art is absolutely what drew me to the game to begin with!

What I also really like about Fae Farm is that tools switch automatically for you. Walk up to a tree to chop, and you’ll immediately have your axe in hand. Then, go to a rock and poof! There’s your pickaxe! It’s a super handy mechanic that I would love to see in all farming sims. It saves time and lets me switch between activities much faster. Besides that, fast travel unlocks early game. There are several points across the map called Wayshrines that act as fast travel spots. You need to craft a seal from cave resources in order to activate the Wayshrine, but you can accomplish that easily early on. Having fast travel early in the game makes it genuinely useful and not just an afterthought. Plus, the mines have waypoints where you can place seals you’ve crafted in order to get to different levels without going through the whole mine. Think Stardew Valley’s mine elevator, but with more magic and teleporting!

    What I Dislike

Unfortunately, Fae Farm has more aspects that I dislike than I like. In order to play multiplayer, or even just name your character, you need to create a Phoenix Labs account. Otherwise, your character’s name defaults to the account name that’s on the system you’re playing on. So, my character’s name is a string of random letters I used for my Steam name. It kind of ruins any romance when my husband calls me by name.

I once wasted a precious Fae Farm day sitting in the crafting menu or almanac menu thinking the game was paused. It certainly was not. The nice thing is that you aren’t negatively affected for passing out after bedtime, so all I truly lost was a day of play time. It didn’t decay friendship points with my critters, and it didn’t ruin any quests. Then there’s the sales tables. The limited sales table spots really get in the way of me mass selling a hoard of items I’ve held onto for too long. It doesn’t inhibit money-making, just clearing out that stack of 600 fibers I probably don’t need so many of.

The exuberant laughing at everything is obnoxious, though. When I accomplish something, I laugh. When talking to an NPC, they laugh instead of speak. None of it is funny! I’d prefer if they muttered some nonsense like Sims do. Unfortunately, the laughing just lends itself to the overall soul-less feel the game has. The NPCs have no deep backgrounds, and their dialogue is repetitive and shallow. There’s not even a point to befriending anyone unless you’re trying to marry them. And there’s only a handful of marriage candidates. Even the festivals feel lifeless. They’re not exciting and engaging. Everything feels very surface level.

    Final Thoughts

Don’t get me wrong, Fae Farm is somewhat fun. I’ve put some hours into it, but I’d hoped for a lot more polish for that AAA price tag. A better story with more meaningful characters would have made this game an absolute gem. I’d also like for everyone to have a nose, please! Everything feels so shallow and surface level. I don’t need some deep, dark secrets to go into it, just a little more substance that makes me want to talk to people or do things. And when you add up several minor gripes, things feel lackluster, and that’s what we have here.

    Overall, I’d give it:

You can find Fae Farm on Steam and Switch now!

In this adorable game, you do exactly that. Of course, you’re trying to work off a massive debt within 30 days, but that’ll be easy, right?

Play as Wonder Wandelier’s leading lady, Pucelle, who’s destroyed her apprenticeship. A clumsy 16-year-old wand-making student at Grimora Magic School, Pucelle now finds herself running the old wand shop called Wonder Wandelier. Her clumsiness has not only damaged the shop owner, but the tools needed to make wands. Now, it’s up to her to fix her mistake, restore the business, pay off the debt, and prove she’s ready to graduate!

You’ll need to venture out into the wilds of Wonder Wandelier in to gather necessary materials for the shop. Take a partner with you and forage for materials, discover treasures, and even unravel mysteries! Just be careful as the world beyond The Portal slowly drains your energy. If you pass out while foraging, your partner will have to carry you home, but they can only carry so much! You may lose precious materials so your partner can bring you safely home. You may also encounter aggressive wildlife you’ll have to dispatch.

When in the shop, Pucelle will work on her wand-making skills. Some wands require rare materials and higher craftsmanship, but they sell for more money. She’ll also need to haggle with the patrons of Wonder Wandelier in order to fetch the best prices for her goods. Haggling won’t come easy, though. You’ll need to build a relationship with them, study their mood, and set the right atmosphere to achieve the right price!

Will Pucelle succeed at paying off her debt and graduate?
