I love cats. I also enjoy both mystery and adventure games. In the upcoming Peace Island, we get an alluring combination of all of these things. Currently in development by Eric Blumrich and a small team of experienced devs (known for games like Prune and Grand Theft Auto V), this game is already gathering attention online.

    About Peace Island:

You’ll play as cats! Starting out, you’ll be playing as the cat named Elizabeth. The day before, she was was coaxed into her pet taxi and dreading a trip to the veterinarian. She never sees the vet, though, instead falling asleep. When she awakes the next day, her human is nowhere to be found and the door is open.

Throughout the game, you will meet 8 other cats. You’ll need to gain the trust of these cats and eventually gain their friendship. At different points, you will control each of the different cats. Each one has unique strengths, weaknesses, and roles.

The world of Peace Island – outside from being Peace Island – is an open-world based on real-life Maine. Inside the island are 4 defined communities. These are Peace City Landing, Greenwood Farms, Ellison Heights, and LaFlamme Fishworks. These are settlements, farmlands, coastlines, woodlands, and more!

The story of the game is that the humans have all gone missing. The mystery is plentiful. There are an invasive species on the islands, artifacts and documents left behind, and 200 years worth of alternate history to unravel. Not only do you have to figure out what happened to the humans, you have to use the divergent storylines to decide if they are worth bringing back.

    Game Features:

    • Cooperate – You’ll have to gain the trust and build friendships with the other cats. You’re going to need them!
    • Discover – It’s up to you to find and piece together all the evidence.
    • Explore – The open-world is huge and scattered with lots of details.
    • Infiltrate – To solve the mystery, you’re going to have to get inside the buildings. It may take more skill to find a way into some of them.

Peace Island is currently in development for PC, Mac, and Oculus VR. There is no set release date, yet, but a beta should be coming soon. You can check out more and support the game on Patreon. You can also see daily screenshots on Twitter.

Don’t worry – I have your fill of cat games! Take a look at The Good Life, Another Sight, and Calico – just to get started. I also have mystery game suggestions – like the newest iteration of Layton’s Mystery Journey and the kooky Lord Winklebottom Investigates.

Explore the Story and Cook Up a Storm

Venba isn’t your average cooking game, and certainly doesn’t feature the usual recipes. Instead, the game serves up a delicious array of Southern Indian fare that will make your mouth water. Plus, you’ll embark on a journey through the life of Venba and her family in the 1980s, who have just immigrated to Canada.

Spend time with Venba and her family in this stylistically and visually cozy game as you experience love, loss, and so much more. Cook up authentic Southern Indian dishes, sometimes from memory. Venba’s precious cookbook, her connection to a home left behind, was damaged in the move to Canada. Now, it’s up to her to solve some puzzles and remake the recipes.

Venba also features a soundtrack inspired by Indian Musicals, and poems from Tamil poet Valluvar. Developer Visai Games has left out no details, and Venba feels like it will be an exceptionally immersive game.

    Coming Soon!

Developer Visai Games announced on Twitter that Venba will release for Nintendo Switch in Spring of this year. The game will also be available on Steam this Spring, and is currently available to Wishlist!

Recall the Scents, the Sounds, and the Sensations of Summer

I was instantly captivated when I saw the hand-painted watercolor art style of developers UN JE NE SAIS QUOI for the first time. Now we have an official announcement from the small indie team from France with a new trailer for their upcoming narrative adventure game Dordogne.

In Dordogne you play as Mimi a 32-year-old woman looking back at her childhood memories of summers spent at her grandmother’s house. With that, there will be puzzles to solve and beautiful landscapes to explore. Moreover, forest walks, climbing, kayaking, and cave explorations are some of the activities you can enjoy while a peaceful soundtrack is playing along.

Filling Mimi’s journal is the focus of the game so you’ll have to collect photos, sounds, objects and words. Each playthrough is unique because you’ll get to choose how you fill those journal pages so as to reflect your personal experience.

Coming to Switch and PC in 2023

Dorgogne, published by Focus Entertainment, will be releasing sometime in 2023 on the Nintendo eShop and PC. You can Wishlist the game on Steam here.

Fly on a Magic Broomstick, Explore an Open-World Island, and Deliver Packages to Friends

Not only are we getting Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara in 2022 from studio Chibig, but we’re also getting Mika and The Witch’s Mountain! Together with developers Nukefist, Chibig will basically be bringing us Kiki’s Delivery Service as an adventure game. Who wouldn’t want that?

In Mika and The Witch’s Mountain, you play as Mika the witch delivering packages to townspeople on a magic broomstick! Since you’re still in training, with every successful delivery, you will earn upgrades to help you navigate this sandbox island. Not only will flying be a bit of a challenge, but so will be protecting your packages from the elements!

On the island, there are also secrets to uncover along with the overall narrative. Even the townspeople will have interesting stories to tell as you get to know them better!

Coming in 2022 on Steam and All Consoles

You’ll be able to soar the skies later this year on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC (Steam).

Since I’ve played the free demo of Mythic Ocean on Steam by indie developers Paralune, I had to know what would happen next and how my choices would affect the outcome of the game! I’m so happy that I don’t have to wait very long now because the full version is coming January 9th, 2020! If you’ve already played the demo, know that there is still so much more to discover and stories to finish!

This narrative exploration game has you adventuring under the sea and meeting adorable fishy characters and Gods. Befriend these Gods via conversation by carefully choosing what to say. This will also ultimately decide the fate of the universe! I have included this game to Wishlist in my Holiday Gift Guide for Gamers and Animal-Lovers because I’m already fond of every fish, dolphin, crab, and sea-creature I met on my journey!

Old Friends Dog Sanctuary is an upcoming mobile game (year 2020) developed by Runaway and based off of a real-life senior dog sanctuary of the same name. This sanctuary is a retirement home specifically for senior dogs, because they need just as much love as puppies. Therefore, all the dogs in the game will be based on these real-life doggo friends. The developers are big supporters of this sanctuary and their hope is to help raise awareness on the difficulties of adopting senior dogs. A game clearly made with love for dogs, Old Friends Dog Sanctuary is on my list of games to keep an eye on!

    About Old Friends Dog Sanctuary

    • Create your own dog sanctuary! Rescue and rehabilitate old dogs and spend your days caring for and loving them.
    • Decorate your indoor and outdoor space with furniture and toys that your dogs will love.
    • Enjoy the loveable nature of every dog, no matter the age or personality.
    • Discover the wonderful personalities of each dog and see their trust in you grow every day.
    • Unlock stories and narrative-driven gameplay as you form a relationship with each dog.

You can help support the Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary by purchasing this 2020 calendar right here. You can also check out Runaway’s official website here and their other mobile games available to download now. All games are about wildlife and nature’s beauty!

If you’re interested in helping dogs in-need, I have another great charity and wholesome PC game for you here: To The Rescue – Run Your Own Doggy Shelter.

Coffee Talk is a narrative game currently in development and production by Toge Productions. You may know Toge for games like She and the Light Bearer or Magicat.

Although seemingly dark, we find Coffee Talk to be a warm and relaxing story of everyday problems through the lens of magic.

    About Coffee Talk

Set in an alternate version of Seattle, Washington, you will be a barista serving fantastical patrons. As rain fills the night outside, you’ll get a glimpse into the lives of orcs, elves, mermaids, and more. You will participate in dialogue with customers while also trying to perfect whatever drink they order.

Unlike other narrative-based games, the storylines and decisions will branch not from your dialogue options but from “how you treat and serve the customers of your café.”

A dark and earthy color scheme meets with a ‘90s anime-inspired art style that is both beautiful and calming. On top of that, the music is a jazzy assortment of lo-fi. Toge calls the game “an experience to make you think, feel, and help rest your body and soul.”

    Game Features:

    • Fantasy Characters: Although the problems are familiar, the characters are anything but. Meet mermaids, orcs, elves, and other yet-to-be-disclosed fantasy races.
    • Unique Outcomes: The way you treat characters while serving them will change the decisions they make.
    • Chill Aesthetics: Along with the look of the game, you will have a selection of chillhop music to help set the scene.

    Here’s the teaser trailer

Coffee Talk is slated for a PC and Mac release “sometime after midnight” this year. A playable demo is available on Steam, itch.io, or directly from Toge Productions’ website. You can follow updates for the game on Twitter.

Need a relaxing game while you wait? We recommend Unpacking. Want more visual novel games? We’ve got that, too, with Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy and What Remains of Edith Finch.
