With Nintendo announcing a portable only Nintendo Switch that is now commonly seen as the successor to the much beloved but aged 3DS, we thought it would be a great idea to take a look at the Nintendo 3DS. This handheld console was first released in February of 2011. The console has since sold nearly 75 million units and features a library of more than 1297 games. We took 15 of the most popular and overall best received games and listed them right here for you! Join us on a journey through The 15 Best 3DS Games.

Nintendo recently announced that you will no longer be able to to purchase games from the Nintendo 3DS eShop beginning end of March, 2023.

As a tribute, I have collaborated a list of what I think were some of the 15 best games for Nintendo 3DS.

If you love your Nintendo Switch, or planning on getting one check out our Top 5 Game Ports and Wii U ports we would love to see on Nintendo Switch.

    Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Of course this game was going to make the list. Animal Crossing: New Leaf is by far one of the most entertaining, family friendly, pick-up-able games of all time. Rated 88/100 by Metacritic, the game is even better than previous entries due to it’s improved characters, dialogue and game features. Oh, and also due to the fact that you can fire Resetti. That too.

    Ever Oasis

As you attempt to discover what happened to your missing brother, you venture into the desert, make allies, and work together to create a perfect oasis. Rated 8.9/10 by IGN and described by them as “fun instead of tedious”, this action-adventure RPG was well-received despite it’s tardiness in joining the 3DS in 2017.

    Fire Emblem Awakening

Fire Emblem awakening received widespread critical acclaim, and still holds a score of 92/100 on Metacritic. Shortly after it’s release, this tactical RPG earned a place on both GameSpot and IGN’s list of best 3DS games.

    Kid Icarus: Uprising

The English localisation of Kid Icarus: Uprising was highly anticipated after it’s announcement. Scoring 83/100 on Metacritic, Nintendo Power described the mythology themed third-person shooter game as “well worth the wait.”

    Shovel Knight

Released in June 2014, Shovel Knight is an 8-bit 2D side-scrolling platform game. Winning numerous awards, the game is held in very high regard and is described as “a brilliant homage to a bygone era.” The game currently holds a rating of 90/100 on Metacritic and 9/10 on IGN.

    Mario Kart 7

Released in December 2011, Mario Kart 7 holds a rating of 85/100 and 9/10 by Metacritic and IGN respectively. The game honours traditional Mario Kart games, whilst also introducing new features such as characters, tracks and power-ups. I’m sorry to say that Rainbow Road is unfortunately still a thing. D̶i̶e̶ ̶a̶l̶r̶e̶a̶d̶y̶.

    ̶

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

Being the remake of a highly regarded game, upon its release in 2011 the game unsurprisingly received critical acclaim. The game was given a score of 94/100 on Metacritic, a 10/10 by Eurogamer and 98% by the Official Nintendo Magazine, who called it “a life-changing game”.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D

Majora’s Mask was also a remake of an original Zelda game. Like Ocarina of time 3D, the game features graphical improvements and new features to make gameplay smoother and richer. Released in 2015, the game was rated 89/100 by Metacritic and 9/10 by GameSpot. Not too shabby.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

Released in 2013, A Link Between Worlds is in some people’s opinion, the best Zelda game for 3DS. Scoring 91/100 on Metacritic and a 10/10 by Nintendo Life, a Polygon reviewer went as far as claiming it to be the “best Zelda game in past twenty years”.

    Monser Hunter Generations

Monster Hunter Generations is an action RPG released worldwide in 2016. Receiving a rating of 85/100 by Metacritic and 8/10 by IGN, many liked the continuity from previous entries, as well as new features, such as the ability to play as a felyne. A rise in the purchase of 3DS consoles occurred as a result.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy

This puzzle game is the last game in the Professor Layton prequel trilogy. It is also the last to feature Professor Layton as the Protagonist (sad reactz only). With over 500 new puzzles and a variety of environments to explore, the game was well received. It is currently rated 81/100 by Metacritic and 9/10 by Eurogamer.

    Super Mario 3D Land

Super Mario 3D Land is a Mario platform game released in 2011. The game was well received, with gaming critics praising the game’s creativity and technical design. Game Informer liked the game so much they cited it as “easily the best reason to own a 3DS.” The game is currently rated 90/100 on Metacritic and 9.5/10 by IGN.

    Bravely Default

Bravely Default is an RPG published in 2012. Set in the fantasy world of Luxendarc, the game utilises a turn-based battle system and job system. Rated 85/100 by Metacritic and 8.5/10 by Gamespot, the game often features on lists of top 3DS games.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

Super Smash Bros. 3DS is the latest entry to the popular crossover fighting series. Released in 2014, the game received critical praise and holds ratings of 85/100 on Metacritic and 8.8/10 by IGN. With Nintendo characters such as Kirby, Link and Mario, and new third party characters such as Pac-man and Bayonetta, the game caters for a wide audience.

    ·····•····· ᗤ ᗣᗣᗣᗣ

    Pokémon Sun/Moon

Released in 2016, many strongly believe Pokémon Sun and Moon are the best 3DS Pokémon games. Rated 87/100 by Metacritic and 9/10 by IGN, critics praised the change from the formula used by previous Pokémon games. IGN praised the game for creating “an engaging adventure that improves on its predecessors.”

If you love your Nintendo Switch, or planning on getting one check out our Top 5 Game Ports and Wii U ports we would love to see on Nintendo Switch. As well as Hokko Life a game truly worth comparing to Animal Crossing.

For a limited time, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can play a battle royale version of the classic Mario games.

Part of the big celebration of Mario’s 35th Anniversary, Nintendo announced that there will be yet another new Mario game coming to the Nitenndo Switch. This one, however, will be quite a bit different than Super Mario 3D All-Stars or Super Mario 3D World. Super Mario Bros. 35 puts an all new spin on this classic franchise.

What is Super Mario Bros. 35

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the genre, battle royale usually pits a large amount of players against each other in an all out war to be the last person standing. Initially reserved for the first-person shooter genre, this game mode has been evolving to take on the likes of games such as Tetris, and try out whacky styles like Fall Guys.

    Super. Mario Bros. 35

Much like Tetris 99, Super Mario 35 will have each player playing solo on their own centered screen with the enemies surrounding. The goal of the game is to bop as many baddies as you can to send more trouble to your enemies, while dodging the trouble that they send to you in return. The ultimate goal being to be the last person in the group of 35 to not be taken down.

    Super Mario Bros. 35 Trailer

    More info

This epic installment in the Mario series will only be available until March 31st, 2021, and will become available for Nintendo Switch Online members on October 1st. For more information about the game, check out the official Nintendo website.

For more wholesome battle royale action, check out the latest in Fall Guys.

Mario has been bringing smiles and frustration to homes all around the world for 35 years now!

Most of us grew up with one or more Mario games at our disposal. Nary a household could be found that didn’t either have Super Mario Bros. or Mario Kart. In one way, shape or form, we’ve all been at the helm of this mustachioed master as he bops endless baddies for our amusement.

In a way, Mario has just as much helped to shape our society as some of the more major events throughout history. At an early age, Mario teaches us that if we just keep trying, and learning from our mistakes, we can overcome just about any obstacle. This lesson has been taught through countless video games spread across every platform that Nintendo has put out (and some it didn’t; i.e. emulators, mobile games and game mods).

    Mario Odyssey review

    The man, the legend.

Over the years, Mario has evolved and found himself the centerpiece of many of medias greatest achievements, including giving John Leguizamo a role in what goes on to be critically hailed as one of the worst movies ever made about a video game.

That being said, I personally thoroughly enjoyed the movie. And, like many of you, have loved just about everything that has had the name Mario ascribed to it through the years. Mario has now even put his own spin on the world of LEGO with a recent collaboration, and will soon be physically racing around in our own homes!!

So I would like to extend a huge thanks to Nintendo for creating such a light hearted and wonderful protagonist, and say a huge…

    HAPPY 35th ANNIVERSARY MARIO!

Celebrate Mario with a deal on games.

For those of you that also love Mario, and wouldn’t mind a couple more Mario games to your Switch library, Walmart is currently offering 33% off of four different Mario games.

    • Super Mario Maker 2
    • Yoshi’s Crafted Wordl
    • Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
    • Mario Tennis Aces

And don’t forget to check out how Nintendo celebrated Mario this year, by releasing a new remaster bundle of three fan favorite Mario Games; Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy.

Nintendo has released a video collage featuring Marios evolution over the years.

Most of us grew up with one or more Mario games at our disposal. Nary a household could be found that didn’t either have Super Mario Bros. or Mario Kart. In one way, shape or form, we’ve all been at the helm of this mustachioed master as he bops endless baddies for our amusement.

So many fond memories of relaxing and hanging out with my small family unit as we traversed the many and varied levels of the Mario universe. From 2D to 3D, Mario has always been there to help us escape from real world problems, into the much more frustrating realm of digital world problems.

Well, Nintendo has put together a super cute little video, the Super Mario Bros. Medley, with accompanying music to take us on a stroll down memory lane. The video displays excerpts from the different mainline Mario games, in chronological order of course.

It is likely painfully obvious that MyPotatoGames adores Animal Crossing. Additionally, as a website that provides wholesome video game news, it seemed imperative to create the following article. An article that is a crossover between Animal Crossing: New Horizons and various games which get a thumbs up from MPG.

It is true that we have featured some video game design ID codes in previous articles. However, this crossover article features a huge variety of some seriously cool video game-themed Animal Crossing: New Horizons designs that you can use in the game.

How To Obtain Custom Designs Using ID Codes

Getting the custom designs app on your NookPhone will allow you to create your own designs and to scan QR codes created by others into your game. However, in regards to clothing with QR codes, you will only be able to place tiles, or wear designs as tank tops. However, you can use Nook Miles to purchase the Pro Design upgrade. The upgrade can be purchased from the Nook Stop terminal at Residents Services for a reasonable 800 Nook Miles.

This will allow you to create different items of clothing as ‘Pro Designs’. There are various types of clothing you can then choose from. Examples include balloon-hem dresses, hoodies, sweaters, coats and more. You can also scan QR codes of Pro Designs from New Leaf.

However, to do this, you need to unlock the Able Sisters clothing shop on your island. In New Horizons, the Able Sisters don’t just sell clothing. The prickly pair have a curious kiosk located at the back of their store. Here, you can save and share designs made in Animal Crossing: New Horizons via Creator ID codes, or Individual Design ID codes.

Providing you have a Switch Online Membership, (and have purchased the Pro Design upgrade), you can use this feature. And despite the game being just a few months old, there are already an astounding number of awesome fanmade designs via the kiosk’s portal. Here are just a few of the best gaming-themed ones:

    Indie Video Game Design Codes:

    Mario Video Game Design Codes:

    Zelda Video Game Design Codes:

    Pokémon Video Game Design Codes:

Animal Crossing Video Game Design Codes:

    Other Video Game Design Codes:

And as the top potato of MyPotatoGames, Henry naturally had to have his very own t shirt as well 😆🥔

In a recent unexpected (but welcomed) announcement from Nintendo, it has been confirmed that an all new Paper Mario game will release for Nintendo Switch this summer. This new Paper Mario series game is entitled Paper Mario: The Origami King, with it’s title and premise fitting to the series’ paper theme.

About Paper Mario: The Origami King

    The History of Paper Mario:

Paper Mario: The Origami King is the sixth installment in the Paper Mario series’ and the first from the series to make it to the Nintendo Switch console.

The first Paper Mario series game, simply entitled Paper Mario, was first released for the Nintendo 64 in Japan back on August 11th 2000. It was then released in the west the year after, in 2001.

Four years later, the second entry to the Paper Mario series was named Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and was released worldwide for the GameCube back in 2004.

In 2007, the third game in the Paper Mario series, entitled Super Paper Mario, was released on the Nintendo Wii

The fourth entry to the Paper Mario was released for Nintendo 3DS in 2012 and called Paper Mario: Sticker Star. (Ooh we’re getting colons in the titles now…fancy…) 🧐

The fifth game of the Paper Mario series (and the predecessor for the upcoming Paper Mario: The Origami King), was named Paper Mario: Color Splash. The game was released for the Nintendo Wii U four years ago in 2016.

    Plot Synopsis:

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, the game begins with Mario and Luigi being invited to attend an Origami Festival by Princess Peach. Upon arriving however, the two brothers discover that the Evil King Olly has seized Peach’s castle and turned her into origami (alongside Bowser’s minions). King Olly intends to take over the world and turn it into origami. Mario, alongside King Olly’s more compassionate sister Olivia, team up with some unexpected allies in order to stop King Olly.

Release Date, Price, & Game Format(s):

The game is set to hit Nintendo Switch consoles relatively soon with a worldwide release date of July 17th.

The game will be avilable to purchase both digitally and physically.

You can pre-order a physical copy of the game from BestBuy in the US here for USD$59.99

You can pre-order a physical copy of the game from BestBuy in Canada here for CAD$79.99

You can pre-order either a physical copy or a digital copy from Nintendo UK here for £49.99

    Features:

    • Playing as Mario, you will have the advantage of being equipped with a variety of new tools to utilize to secure victory.
    • One of Mario’s new abilities, called 1000-Fold Arms, allows you to do many things by interacting with the landscape by stretching out, pulling, and peeling away at things
    • The 1000-Fold Arms prove helpful in revealing a bunch of new locations
    • Additionally, you’ll face puzzles which Mario’s new arms will help you solve
    • And as if that wasn’t enough, these nifty arms will also help you uncover unexpected surprises.
    • Throughout your journey you’ll find allies in characters both old, such as the Toads, and new, for example King Olly’s kind-hearted sister, Olivia.
    • However, you may find some unexpected characters willing to be allies, such as Bob-ombs, who have been long-standing enemies of Mario. Fun fact: In Paper Mario: The Origami King, despite looking like their otherwise ordinary selves, the Bob-omb allies don’t have a visible fuse like in previous Paper Mario games.
    • You know that the situation must be especially dire. As along the way Mario ends up enlisting the help of mortal enemies as allies, including the big bad Bowser, who is usually doggedly devising and doing dastardly deeds of his own.
    • However, desperate times call for desperate measures. Therefore if characters have not yet been turned to origami by King Olly, Mario will accept all the help he can get with open arms, (literally!).

Is Peach Doomed To Be A Damsel In Distress?

But after defeating King Olly, will the unlikely alliances continue? It seems highly unlikely, as I doubt Princess Peach has taken too kindly to all the times (estimated to be between 15-20 times) Bowser or his minions have kidnapped her. Initially he would kidnap her and often lock her up so he could take over the Mushroom Kingdom.

There have been other random reasons, such as simply out of spite, or to lure Mario into traps when he naturally comes to rescue her. Bowser has also been known to try and marry Peach to get her to sign over to him the legal rights to the Mushroom Kingdom.

Eventually, he falls in love with her despite her not feeeling the same way (who would after being constantly kidnapped by a fire-breathing, spike-shelled, large turtle-like, Koopa creature). Peach likes Mario, and this is arguably the main reason Mario and Bowser are mortal enemies.

His jealousy of Peach’s love for Mario drives him crazy. He becomes that infatuated with her, that he kidnaps her in the 2019 Nintendo Switch game, Super Mario Odyssey with the intention of forcing her to marry him. Even picking out her wedding dress and the bridesmaids, Bowser clearly has no boundaries. Alongside the release of the Super Mario Odyssey game, was some slightly creepy wedding amiibo figurines of Peach and Bowser as bride and groom (and a Mario wedding amiibo too?! Too much drama smh). Love triangle much?!

Yeah, I’m happy with my non-wedding-themed Mario figurine with his Cappy cap, thanks..

Additionally, it is true that Bowser and Mario have teamed up before, such as in Bowser’s Inside Story (questionable morals on Mario and Luigi’s behalf…), Super Paper Mario, Super Mario RPG, and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga (briefly during the tutorials). Bowser will only lower himself to team up with them for his own self-preservation, his (often warped and evil) desires, and his wish to have all of the power available everywhere, all to himself. Woe betide anyone who dares be more powerful than Bowser…

Well for a short while at least, Bowser gets taken down a peg or two by King Olly. Possibly King Olly’s only good deed. Bowser finds himself partially origamied. He finds himself folded in half and all of his minions turned into origami soldiers, no longer answering to him, but only to the diabolical King Olly. Undoubtedly, the do-gooders of the Mushroom Kingdom will find a way to restore Bowser to his full form and reverse the origami affects on his minions (whilst they do the same for Princess Peach). 🙄 Why not let the weakened Bowser suffer for his crimes, instead of letting him return to his unrelenting kidnappings and scheming.

But to end on a more positive note, why not get artsy and celebrate this exciting announcement, and the action packed accompanying trailer. Whilst waiting for the game to release, you could make some of these super cool mario origami characters using tutorials and printables from YouTuber Jo Nakashima.

Get your hands on a few choice titles at discount with Nintendo’s Mario Day Sale!

Happy Mario Day, everyone! Basically the most iconic figure in video game history gets his very own day today. Mario helped pave the way for video games to be the biggest and fastest growing media industry in the world. Many games and characters have taken their roots from this classic Italian-American protagonist.

    Mario Day

Mario was named after Mario Segale, an Italian-American businessman, after an argument with the president of Nintendo over being paid overdue rent. Since his debut in Donkey Kong, Mario has had countless games and movies made in his likeness and namesake. It is clear that Mario has certainly had his impact on the flow of human history.

    Nintendo Sale

Nintendo is celebrating this special day with a sale on some of Mario’s currently best-selling games. This sale gives a $20 discount on four different games, and will run until March 14th. The games for sale are Super Mario Maker 2, Super Mario Party, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games and Yoshi’s Crafted World.

    Mario Games Sale

All of these games were originally $60, which makes them now only $40, and they are all available through the Nintendo eShop. There you will also find links to places like Gamestop and Amazon, to get the discounts on the hardcopy versions as well.

For a really cute game inspired by Mario, check out my coverage of Leilani’s Island.
